Schuifraam deel 2 / Sash window part 2

Nadat het raamkozijn geschilderd was, ben ik begonnen met het maken van de losse raamdelen voor het bovenraam. Dit wordt bovenin het raamkozijn vastgelijmd, dus ben ik daar eerst mee begonnen.

Eerst wilde ik de houten delen inkerven om ze later van een ruit te kunnen voorzien, maar hoe moest ik dat doen? Na een aantal mislukte pogingen om een 3 mm breed latje in het midden in te kerven met een stanleymes, moest ik hiermee stoppen want mijn voorraad 3 mm latjes (vurenhout) werd al minder en minder….wat nu??

 

After the window frame was painted, I started making the separate window parts for the upper window. This is glued to the top of the window frame, so I started with that part first.

First I wanted to notch the wooden parts to be able to provide them later with a window glass, but how and with what could I notch the wood? After a number of unsuccessful attempts to notch the middle of a 3 mm wide slat with a hobby knife, I had to stop because my stock of 3 mm slats (pinewood) was already getting less and less…. What to do now ??

Gelukkig schoot me ineens een idee te binnen. Ik had voor de bouw van het grachtenhuis een kruishout gekocht, dat al te zien was in mijn vorige blogbericht. Dit was om de raam- en deurkozijnen te voorzien van een zogeheten ‘kraal’, zeg maar een soort sierrand. Het enige nadeel nu was dat die vorm taps was en niet recht naar beneden. Eerst maar eens proberen het kruishout terug te vinden en dan toch maar eens uitproberen….

Fortunately, an idea suddenly came into my mind. 25 years ago I also had bought a 'crosswood' (=literally translated, because I can't find the English name for this carpenters tool) tool for the construction of my canal house, it was showed to you in my previous blogpost. This tool was to provide the window and door frames with a so-called "bead", that's to say a kind of decorative edge. The only downside now was that the shape of it was tapered and not straight down. First I had to find back again this tool and then I had to try it out….

Het werken met het kruishout was weer even oefenen, maar daarna ben ik begonnen met een aantal latten in te kerven. Zoals gezegd heeft het pinnetje op deze tool een tapse vorm, dus heb ik na het kerven de snede met een hobby mes dieper gemaakt, ongeveer 1 mm, daarna heb ik met een kapotte tandarts tool de gleuf dieper gemaakt en meer recht van vorm. Het was flink peuteren, en vooral volhouden, maar uiteindelijk werkte het.
 
Working with the wood tool again took some practice, but then I started notching a number of 3 mm wide slaths. As mentioned, the pin on this tool has a tapered shape, so after notching I made the cut deeper with a hobby knife, about 1 mm more depth, then I made the groove deeper with a broken dentist tool and made it more straight. It was a lot of fiddling around, and above all, persistence, but in the end it worked.

Na het beschilderen van de raamdelen heb ik de tandarts tool ook gebruikt om de inkepingen schoon te maken van verfresten. Hierna kon ik het vensterglas (styreen sheets voor modelbouw, maat 0,13 mm dik) erin maken.
 
After painting the window parts I also used the dentist tool to clean the notches from paint residues. After this I could make the window glass (styrene sheets from train modeller shop, size is 0,13 mm thickness) in it.

Ik heb de maat van het bovenraam met een permanente marker op het transparante styreen vel afgetekend. Het is erg nauwgezet werk omdat je het ruitje zo’n 1 mm breder (dan de binnenkant van de raamdelen) moet aftekenen/afknippen met een schaar. Ik heb denk ik wel duizend keer het glas in de raamdelen gepast vóórdat ik in de gaten had dat de hoekjes schuin afgeknipt moesten worden i.v.m. de aanwezigheid van ’n petieterig klein beetje lijm in de hoekjes. Toen was het “glas zetten” snel klaar 😊!!
 
Using a permanent marker I marked the size of the top frame on the transparent styrene sheet. It is very painstaking work because you have to mark/cut the window about 1 mm wider (than the inside of the window parts) with scissors. I had some troubles with not seeing the window glass because of the transparency. I tried to put in the glass in the window parts for maybe a thousand times, before I realized that the corners had to be cut off diagonally, just  because of the presence of a teeny tiny bit of glue in the corners. Then the “setting of the glass” was quickly done 😊!!

Het onderste raam, en schuivende deel, bestaat uit twee delen met ruiten en wordt op dezelfde manier in elkaar gezet. Allen de middelste raamlat die de ruiten scheidt, gaf me wat hoofdbrekens. Dat latje van 3 mm breed moest aan beide zijden worden ingekerfd, omdat er natuurlijk aan twéé zijden vensterglas in moest komen. Het binnengedeelte van die middelste raamlat, van ongeveer 1 mm, moest intact blijven, dus...
Vraag niet hoe, maar het is na veel **** woorden gelukt.
 
The bottom window, this is the sliding part, consists of two parts having window glass and is assembled in the same way. Only the middle window bar, that separates the window glass, gave me some headaches. This slat of 3 mm wide had to be notched on both sides, because, of course, there had to be window glass on both sides of it. The inner part of that middle window slath, of about 1 mm, had to remain intact, so... 
Don't ask how, but it worked out quite well after many **** words.

Het laatste, en onderste, dwarsgedeelte van dit onderraam was het meest moeilijke en ingewikkelde deel om uit te vinden en te realiseren.
Dit deel rust aan de buitenkant op de zandstenen vensterbank van het raam en heeft naast een samengestelde profiellijst ook een schuine hoek van 20 graden. Ik heb het gemaakt van een stuk profiellijst dat ik nog had liggen.
 
The last, and bottom, transverse part of this bottom window was the most difficult and complicated part to invent and achieve.
This part rests on the outside on the sandstone windowsill of the window and, in addition to a composite wooden molding, also has an oblique angle of inclination of 20 degrees. I made it from a piece of wooden relief molding that I still had lying around.

Na het plaatsen en vastlijmen van het bovenraam op het raamkozijn heb ik op het 4 mm brede gedeelte nog een extra deklatje van 4 x 1 mm toegevoegd, zodat het schuifraam een betere geleiding kreeg.
 
 After putting in place and gluing the top window to the window frame, I added an extra cover strip of 4 x 1 mm on the 4 mm wide part of the window frame, so that the sliding window got better guidance.

Toen heb ik het schuiven van het schuifraam uitgeprobeerd, het ging enigszins stroef maar na verwijderen van ietsje verf uit het samengestelde profiel, ging het al iets beter. Toen herinnerde ik me dat ik op de randen van de schuifladen van mijn Twentse linnenkast wat kaarsvet had gesmeerd en die laden schuiven tot op de dag van vandaag prima. Dus heb ik met de scherpe rand van een waxinelichtje (zonder cup uiteraard) het 3 mm gedeelte van het raamkozijn ingesmeerd. Nu maar hopen dat het straks ook nog werkt…
 
Then I tried to slide the sliding window, it was a bit stiff, but after removing just a little paint residue from the composed window profile, it slided a bit better. Then I remembered that I had smeared some candle wax on the edges of the drawers of my Twente linen cupboard and those drawers slide just fine to this day. So I smeared the 3 mm part of the window frame with the (sharpest) edge of a tea light (without the aluminimum cup of course). Let's hope it still works too later on...

Nu moet ik de handvaten voor het raam nog maken, want het raam moet wel omhoog geschoven kunnen worden om de opkamer te kunnen luchten. Daarna moet het geheel in de muur van de opkamer geplaatst worden en de binnenkant afgewerkt worden met latjes. Daarover later meer, want met het bouwen van een huis moet je altijd veel stappen vooruit denken, dat heb ik net op tijd gedaan. Het raam kan pas geplaatst worden als de buitenmuur klaar is en dat betekent dat ik eerst de aangrenzende woonkamer moet gaan bouwen.
 
Now I still have to make the handles for the window, because the window must be able to be slide upwards, to ventilate the up stairs room. Then the whole must be placed in the wall of the up stairs room and the inside has to be finished with slats. More about that later, because when building a house you always have to think several steps ahead, I did that just in time. The window can only be placed when the outer wall is finished and that means that I have to build the adjoining living room first.

Komend weekeinde is het Pasen en om in de stemming te komen, vond ik vanmorgen onverwachts een doos voor mijn voordeur: het kwam van mijn lieve vriendin Birgit. Birgit stuurde mij een vrolijke zelfgemaakte, mooie Paasgroet en had zeer attent (zoals Birgit altijd is) een doos latex handschoenen, desinfectievloeistof en mondkapjes meegestuurd, waar ik ontzettend blij mee ben.
Maar Birgit had zelfs mijn kleinzoontje niet vergeten, voor hem zat er heerlijk chocolade lekkers in de doos. Samen met een paar ijzeren pennen om in een zaaibed (van bijv. bloemen) te zetten. Laten mijn kleinzoon en zijn moeder nu net een bakje ingezaaide bloemzaadjes in de vensterbank hebben staan, om deze later in het voorjaar in hun tuin te zetten.
Liefste Birgit, ik dank je vanuit het diepst van mijn hart voor zoveel warme vriendschap, liefs en vrolijks voor deze Paasdagen: DANK JE WEL!!!!

This coming weekend it's Easter weekend and to get in the mood, I unexpectedly found a box this morning at my front door: it came from my dear friend Birgit. Birgit sent me a cheerful homemade, beautiful Easter greetingcard and she included very thoughtful (as Birgit always is) a box of latex gloves, disinfectant fluid and mouth masks, which I am very, very happy for.
But Birgit had not even forgotten my grandson, for him there were delicious chocolate treats and Easter Bunny in the box. Together with a few iron pins to put in a seed bed (for example for flowers). Let my grandson and his mother just have put a bowl of sown flower seeds in their windowsill, to put them in their garden later in the spring.
Dearest Birgit, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for so much friendship, warmth and joy for these Easter days: THANK YOU !!!!
