Renovatie van de antieke Twentse linnenkast, in miniatuur / Renovation of the antique, Twente linen cupboard, in miniature

Al meer dan 20 jaar zag mijn miniatuur antieke Twentse linnenkast er zó uit, tijd voor een aanvulling in miniatuur “linnen”. Ergens had ik nog wat bedrukte katoenen doeken liggen, die ik ooit op een beurs gekocht heb bij Catherine Ferouelle.

For more than 20 years my miniature antique Twentse linen cupboard looked like this, so time for an addition of miniature “linen”. Somewhere I had stored some cotton printed cloths, which I’ve ever bought on a miniatures fair of Catherine Ferouelle.

Nadat ik de doeken had toegevoegd aan de rest van het linnengoed vond ik de kleuren wit niet bij elkaar passen, de nieuwe doeken warn veel te wit. Maar bovenal vond ik het overige linnengoed (in stukjes geknipte tissues) niet mooi aangesloten/plat liggen op de plank, dus alles ging uit de kast, hupsakee, weg ermee ;).

After adding the cloths to the rest of the linen in the cupboard, I thought that the white colors didn’t fit to each other, the new cloths were far too white. But above all I thought that the rest of the linen, which in fact are cut to fit pieces of tissues), didn't lie flat enough on the shelf, so I took everything out of the cupboard, and make way for new ;).

In de lades van de kast vond ik ook nog de lakentjes terug, die ik toen heb geborduurd: véél te groot, ook te groot opgevouwen en hier en daar vergeeld…

In the drawers of the cupboard I also found back the sheets, which I embroidered then: they were way too large, also folded way in too large pieces and here and there they were yellowed…

…ik had ze toen zelfs gezoomd met een kleine naainaald na het borduren.

…I’ve then even sewed the seams with a tiny needle after embroidering.

Tijd voor een wasje: lekker fris gewassen en in de bijbehorende molton onderdeken gerold om zachtjes het water eruit te wringen, anders beschadigde het borduursel misschien.

Time to do the laundry: freshly washed, I rolled the linen in the corresponding molton blanket for gently wringing out the water, otherwise it would maybe damage the embroidery.

Ik heb het linnengoed daarna opgeperst met een heet strijkijzer en in repen stof geknoopt om op de centrale verwarming verder te kunnen laten drogen.

I then pressed the linen with a hot iron and knotted it in strips of fabric, in order to continue the drying process on the central heating.

Nu de linnenkast aanpakken, de planken eruit en ze voorzien van een nieuw strookje echt kant.

Het onderste stukje kant zat erin, erboven zie je het nieuwe kant.

Rosa maakt echt prachtig gekant klost kant, ik ben hier dus heel erg blij mee.

Now the cupboard itself was on turn, I took the shelves out and gave them a new piece of lace.

The piece of lace at the bottom side was in it, above you see the new lace.

Het nieuwe linnengoed (van Catherine Ferouelle) ligt alvast op de planken.

The new linen (of Catherine Ferouelle) is already on the shelves.

Andere voorwerpen, die in zo’n antieke linnenkast horen, zijn een bruidspijp, een bijbel en een flacon jenever met een glaasje, waarover meer uitleg in een ander blogbericht over de makeover van deze voorwerpen.

Other objects, which belong in this sort of antique linen cupboard, are i.e. a wedding pipe, a bible and a flask of gin with a glass, but I’ll tell you more about it later, in another blog post after the makeover of these objects.

Tot mijn verrassing vond ik in de oude kartonnen doos met naaibenodigdheden ook een naaldenkokertje (5 mm lang) terug, ik heb het gemaakt van een cocktailprikker. Ik weet nog dat ik toen mijn nagels en vingers er bijna afgeschuurd had, maar het is gelukt ;O)!!

To my surprise I found in the old cardboard box for sewing utensils back a needle holder (5 mm long), I made it then from a cocktail stick. I do remember that I then almost sanded away all of my nails and finger tips, but I did it ;O)!!

Als laatste karweitje heb ik de handgrepen en de sleutel geschilderd van nieuwe “goud”kleur naar brons. Zo, kastje gezien? Dan gaan de deurtjes dicht, tot later. 
Ik ga kijken of ik al wat nieuwe lakens kan borduren.

As final job I painted the handles and the key, which had a new “gold” color, into a bronze color. Well, that’s it for now, by the way: have you seen the cupboard? Than I close the doors till later. 
I’ll see if I can do some embroidery on the new bed sheets.

De ribben van de mini boerderij zijn de gebinten / The ribs of the mini farm are the cross beams

Een paar blogberichten terug vertelde ik jullie dat er iets gebeurd is betreffende de bouw van de mini boerderij, weten jullie nog?

Nou, een week of twee terug ben ik “ten einde raad” naar de 1:1 boerderij gereden die ik nu aan het nabouwen ben en jawel, hij staat er nog steeds, en nog steeds op dezelfde plaats ;O) en inmiddels al  110 jaar!!

A few blog posts back I told you that something happened regarding the build of my mini farm, do you recall?

Well, about two weeks ago I “desperately” drove back to the 1:1 farm, which I’m rebuilding now and yes, he is still there, and still on the same spot ;O) and 110 years now already!!

Ik liet jullie toen deze foto zien, waarop een dikke lat te zien is en kleinere latten. Het moet een zogenaamd gebint worden, wat ergens in het stallengedeelte moet komen te staan. Ik meende mij te herinneren dat het een dikke balk net naast de koestal was. Maar tijdens mijn zoektocht naar informatie over de traditionele bouw van boerderijen in Oost-Gelderland (zoals deze boerderij is gebouwd), kwam ik dit soort gebinten, zoals bij mijn Opa in het achterhuis stond, niet tegen. Wat nu? Dit was de reden waarom ik vastliep en het antwoord alleen maar kon krijgen door terug te gaan naar de 1:1 boerderij.

I then showed you this picture, whereon you see a big bar and  some smaller slaths. It has to become a cross beam, which is standing somewhere in that part of the farm, where the stables are. I thought I remembered that it was a big beam, standing just next to the cow stable. But during my search for information of the traditional build of farms in the East of Gelderland (just like this farm is built), I didn’t came across this sort of construction of cross beams, as in my grandpa’s stable. What to do now?

This was the reason why I got stuck and I only could get the answer by going back to the 1:1 farm.

Aangekomen bij de boerderij was duidelijk te zien dat het huis gerenoveerd werd en er niemand aanwezig was, wat een teleurstelling! Maar na even gewacht en gekeken te hebben naar de buitenkant van de boerderij, kwam er een auto aangereden met, jawel: de huidige eigenaar :D! De man was verrast mij te zien en na uitleg van wie ik was en wat ik bij zijn huis deed, mocht ik mee naar binnen. Over en weer waren er wat vragen, betreffende de constructie en de geschiedenis van de boerderij, en hij heeft mij verteld waar de paal in de stal heeft gestaan.

Daarna heeft hij ook nog voor mij de buitenkant van de boerderij opgemeten, de juiste maten die ik nodig had om ver te kunnen bouwen, hoera!!

Arriving at the farm it was obvious that the farm was in a process of thoroughly renovation and that there was also nobody in the house, what a disappointment!! But after a short while and meanwhile good looking at the outside of the farm, there drove a car to the farm with, yes: the present owner :D! The man was surprised to see me and after some explanation about who I was and what I was doing next to his house, I hospitable was invited to come inside. It seemed that we both had some unanswered questions, regarding the construction and history of the farm, and he was able to tell me where the bar in the stable had been.

After that he also measured the outside of the farm for me, the correct measurements, which I needed to continue with the build, hurray!!

Dus nu kon ik verder en ben begonnen met het maken van een gebint, een stevige “eiken” balk. Ik heb hiervoor een balkje van 30 x 30 mm balsahout gebruikt, welke ik heb bewerkt met een hobbymes om een oud uiterlijk te creëren.  Daarna heb ik de balk geverfd, gebruikmakend de zelfde schildertechniek als voor de meubels, zie vorige blogberichten.

So, now I could continue and I started making a beam, a sturdy “oak” beam. For this purpose I used a beam of 30 x 30 mm balsa wood, which I’ve edited with a hobby knife, for creating an antique look. After that I painted the beam, using the same paint technique as for the furniture, see previous blog posts.

Omdat ik het traditionele gebint wilde namaken, moest ik ook aan de onderkant gaten maken in de balk. Door deze gaten werden stevige ronde balkjes gestoken om zo met mankracht de eiken gebintstijl op te tillen en op een gemetselde poer te kunnen plaatsen. Dit werd gedaan door  sterke mannen, pffff, wat hebben wij het tegenwoordig gemakkelijk met al die machines, hè ;)?!

Because I wanted to imitate a traditionally made beam, I also had to make holes at the underside of the bar. Through these holes were stabbed sturdy round sticks, for lifting the oak cross beam and placing it on the masonry(bob??). This was done by very strong men, phew, how easy this job is nowadays, by using machines, isn’t it ;)?!

Oké, alles ging goed zo ver, totdat ik eind vorige week tijdens werkzaamheden aan de schutting met en klauwhamer hard op mijn duim sloeg, au!! Met de Paasdagen had ik dus prachtige nail-art op mijn duimnagel, ik zal even wat lichter werk moeten doen, want hard drukken met mijn duim voel ik echt wel ;). Daarom heb ik een oude kast uit mijn grachtenhuis gepakt (een Twentse linnenkast, die ook hier in de streek bekend was) om deze eens grondig te renoveren. Ik heb het in het midden van de jaren ’90 gemaakt en er kan veel aan verbeterd worden. Te beginnen werden de blank houten delen aan de binnenkant in walnoten kleur gebeitst. Nu ben ik nog steeds bezig met de rest van het interieur, maar als mijn duim gauw geneest, dan kan ik weer verder bouwen aan de boerderij.

Okay, everything went well so far, until I beat very hard with a claw hammer on my thumb, during the repairs of our fence, ouchhh!! So, during the Easter weekend I had for the first time real nail-art on my thumb nail. I’ll have to do some lighter work, because too much pression with my thumb doesn’t feel good ;). That’s why I've taken an old cabinet out of my canal house (it's a linen cupboard after a model of the Dutch region Twente, which was also common for our region), for starting a thorough renovation. I've made it myself in the 90s and it can be much more improved. Starting with the plain wooden parts on the inside, they are now stained in a walnut colored. Now I’m still busy with the rest of the interior, but if my thumb will heal quickly, than I can build along at the farm again.

Eirond en een beetje ‘verdrietig’ / Egg-shaped and a bit ‘sad’

Het kwam met de pakketdienst mee, in een doos vol met lekkers voor Pasen, een prachtige zelfgemaakte kaart, lieve vogelhuisjes, een doosje vruchtenthee en een dikke gouden Paashaas van een bekend merk, dat garant staat voor iets heel lekkers ;O!!

Maar wat was daar nu zo verdrietig aan?? Nou, het kleine schattige houten Paashaasje (traditioneel gemaakt in het Ertsgebergte) dat ook in de doos zat, had tijdens de reis zijn narcisje verloren. Ondanks dat alles goed ingepakt was, was het bloemetje afgebroken, maar na een nieuw gaatje te hebben geboord en een drupje lijm, zat het weer stevig in zijn pootje, en zijn wij beiden blij J!

Als je goed kijkt, zie je dat het haasje van top tot teen bijna volledig uit eivormige stukjes hout bestaat, hihi, het is dus een echte Paashaas, die eieren rondbrengt ;)!!

It came with the mailman, in a box filled with a beautifully selfmade card, lovely tiny birdhouses, a box of fruits tea, yummy chocolates and a fat golden Easter bunny of a wellknown brand, which garantees something very delicious for your taste buds ;O!!

But what was now so sad about that? Well, the tiny cute, wooden Easter Bunny (traditionally made in Erz mountains), who was also travelling in this box, did lost his daffodil during the trip. Despite that everything was very well wrapped, his flower did broke, but after I drilled a new hole and used a drop of glue, it was fixed again firmly into his paw, and now we are both happy :)!

If you look well, you can see that the Easter Bunny almost from top to toe does exists of egg-shaped pieces of wood, hehe, so it's a real Easter Bunny, who's bringing Easter eggs ;)!!

Hier, aan de Oostkant van Nederland, is het erg warm en zonnig lenteweer, dus voor wie dat kan: geniet ervan!!

Hopelijk is het in de komende feestdagen nog mogelijk om iets in miniatuur te maken….want er staan naast Pasen ook nog een aantal verjaardagen op mijn kalender ;).

Ik wil jullie allemaal Vrolijke Paasdagen toewensen!

Voorjaarsschoonmaak / Spring cleaning

In mijn laatste bericht vertelde ik jullie dat ik vastzat in de bouw van de boerderij omdat ik niet de juiste maten van de 1:1 boerderij had. Tot mijn grote vreugde is daar onverwacht verandering in gekomen :)!! Komende weken kan ik weer verder met de bouw van de stallen, over hoe dat zo gekomen is, vertel ik jullie als ik weer wat nieuws kan laten zien. Maar nu……is de voorjaarsschoonmaak aan de beurt ;).

In my previous blogpost I told you that I got stuck in the construction of my mini farm, because I didn’t have the right measurements of the real life farm. Well,  to my greatest pleasure I can tell you this unexpectedly has changed :) !! In the coming weeks I can go on with the build of the stables for the cattle, about how this happened, that's something I’ll tell you when I can show you something new again. For now…..the spring cleaning is on turn ;).

In maart was er weer de DollHouse Nederland show in Arnhem, ik heb er wat meubeltjes gekocht bij het “Meubelparadijs”: een keukentrapje en een bed voor in de mini boerderij.

Ik zal aan de hand van foto’s laten zien hoe ik ze geschilderd en klaargemaakt heb, zodat ze in de jaren ’50 passen en in mijn boerderij.

Last March was the DollHouse Nederland Show in Arnhem, I’ve then bought  some furniture from the “Meubelparadijs”: a little kitchen stairs and a bed for my mini farm.

Using pictures I’ll show you how I’ve painted them and given them the look of the 50s, so that they will fit in my mini farm.

Nadat ik het hout hier en daar wat ‘beschadigd’ had en glad geschuurd, heb ik ze geschilderd.

Ik heb acrylverf in de kleuren gele oker, raw sienna/maple syrup gebruikt en van de krijtverf de kleur Hampton blue.

After I ‘damaged’ the wood here and there and I've smoothly sanded them and painted them.

I’ve used acrylic paint in the colors yellow ochre, raw sienna/maple syrup and of the chalk paint I used the color Hampton blue.

Tussen het aanbrengen van de verflagen door,  goed laten drogen en daarna weer heel voorzichtig schuren. Ik heb ook een dunner touwtje aangebracht aan de onderkant van de trap.

In between applying the layers of paint, let thoroughly dry and carefully sand after painting each layer. I've also add a thinner rope at the underside of the stairs.

Behalve voor allerlei werk/karweitjes werd het keukentrapje in de boerderij ook gebruikt tijdens de voorjaarsschoonmaak, als er gewit werd en/of gezwart in de keuken en stallen.

Als je goed kijkt, zie je spetters witkalk en zwartsel op de keukentrap ;).

Except for all sort of work/jobs, this kitchen stairs was used in the farm during springcleaning, for painting new layers of whitewash and the black edges at the underside of the walls in kitchen and stables.

If you look well, you see the drops of whitewash and the black tar on several spots on the stairs ;).

Ik heb dezelfde werkwijze gebruikt om het bed te schilderen.

Als laatste heb ik het bed een krijtverf waslaagje gegeven.

I used the same method to paint the bed.

Lastly I gave the bed a layer of créme wax for chalk paint.

Nadat het ‘oude’ bed geschilderd was, heb ik er wat beschadigingen/scheuren op aan gebracht, ingekrast met een prikpen.

Aangezien mijn grootouders in de jaren ’50 nog op stromatrassen sliepen, werd in de lente, tijdens de voorjaarsschoonmaak ook het stro van de matrassen vernieuwd. Ik heb dus nog wat te doen: nieuwe tijken voor het bed maken en voorzien van nieuw vers stro.

After the ‘old’ bed was painted, I’ve put some damaging/cracks, scratched in with a prick pen.

Because in the 50s my grandparents were still sleeping on straw mattresses, the straw got refreshed/renewed in spring, during the spring cleaning. So, I still have some work to do: making new mattress covers and putting in fresh straw.
