Aardbeien in een “slof”? / Strawberries in a “slipper”?

In mei begon hier, in Nederland, het aardbeienseizoen en het plukken van vele kilo’s  zoete en sappige aardbeien. Zo vers geplukt van het land in een soort spanen plukmand, een zogenaamde “aardbeienslof” (ik heb echt geen idee waar deze benaming vandaan komt..;O).

In May was here, in The Netherlands, the start of the strawberries  season and the picking of lots sweet and juicy strawberries. Freshly picked from the field in a special sort of wooden basket, named (literally translated!) a strawberry “slipper” (I really have no clue why it's called like that..;O).

Nadat ik in juni weer eens een bak aardbeien had gekocht, leek het mij eens leuk om te zien of ik ook miniatuur aardbeien kon maken van Fimoklei. Hieronder zijn wat foto’s genomen tijdens het maken:

After buying a box of strawberries again in June I thought it would be fun to try my hand at making miniature strawberries, out of Fimo clay. Here are some pictures taken during the process of making them:

Verschillende tinten rood en zelfs een paar aardbeien tijdens de verkleuring van witgroen naar rood. Hiervoor heb ik groene, rode en gele acrylverf gebruikt. Dat was een hele uitdaging maar ik ben tevreden over het resultaat.

Different shades of red and even a few strawberries during the discoloration of white-green to red. For this job I used green, red and yellow acrylic paint. That was quite a challenge, but I’m satisfied about the result.

De kleinste aardbei is 2 mm lang, maar nadat ik een paar van die kleintjes had gemaakt, ben ik ermee gestopt: ik kon het kroontje bijna niet meer vasthouden met mijn fijnste pincet en het was veel te arbeidsintensief ;)!

The tiniest strawberry is 2 mm long, but after I made a few of those little ones, I quitted: I couldn’t hold the tiny leaves anymore with my smallest size tweezers and it was way too labour intensive ;)!

Het leek me leuk om ook te proberen om de aardbeienslof, of een klein plukmandje te maken. Hiervoor heb ik een placemat gebruikt, wat ik heb gevonden in de kringloopwinkel: ik weet niet wat voor materiaal het is, maar het lijkt een beetje op houtspaan, toch?

I thought it would be fun for also trying to make the wooden basket, or a small picking basket. For this I’ve used a placemat, which I found in a thrift store: I don’t know what material it is, but it looks a bit like wood, don’t you think?

Ik heb deze mini aardbeitjes ook op Facebook laten zien om te vragen of ik ze ‘los’ zal verkopen op de komende DHN-show (eind september in Arnhem), zodat je ze zelf zou kunnen gebruiken in een miniscene van jezelf. Wat vinden jullie daarvan?

Toen was bij een van de antwoorden ook het idee geopperd om een beschuitje met aardbeitjes te maken. Ik heb het geprobeerd en eentje met alleen suiker erop, dit is het resultaat:

I’ve also showed these miniature strawberries on Facebook and asked if I should sell them "loose" on the coming DHN-show (at the end of September in Arnhem), so you can use them in a miniature scene of yourself. What do you think of this??

Then someone gave me the idea of making a rusk with strawberries. I’ve tried to make it and one with just sugar, this is the result:

Het is nu echt herfstweer, veel koeler, storm- en regenachtig, de zomer is nu echt voorbij.

The weather here, in The Netherlands, is as always in autumn: much cooler, stormy and rainy, the summer is definitely gone now.

Wortels wecken, of inmaken / Preserving carrots

In mijn jeugd hadden we een grote groentetuin met verschillende soorten groenten en fruit. Tijdens de zomer en herfst werden er fruit en groenten ingemaakt/geweckt door mijn moeder, zo hadden we groenten en fruit tijdens de winer. Zie voor informatie: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wecken

Zo gingen ook de wortelen vers van de tuin de grote kookpannen in, maar ook voor een deel in de glazen weckpotten voor de winter. Op bovenstaande foto is de voorbereiding van het wecken door mijn (miniatuur) oma te zien, maar tegelijkertijd maakt ze worteltjes klaar voor de avondmaaltijd.

In my childhood we had a large garden full of all sorts of vegetables and fruits. During the summer and autumn my mother always preserved the vegetables and fruits by a method named home canning, this way we had vegetables and fruits during the winter. So, this way loads of carrots disappeared in large cooking pans, but partially, for the coming winter, also in the special glass jars. On the picture above you can see the preparation for preserving in glass jars by my (miniature) grandma, but at the same time she is preparing the carrots just for dinner.

Oma stoofde altijd een ui mee met de wortelen, voor een fijnere smaak. Deze ‘grote’ miniatuur ui meet 5 mm in doorsnede en met loof erbij meet het 15 mm lang. 

Wortels en het uitje zijn door mij gemaakt, en vanwege hun diversiteit is het zeer tijdrovend werk.

Grandma always cooked an onion with the carrots, for a nice taste. This 'big' miniature onion measures 5 mm in diameter and together with the leaf it measures 15 mm long.

Carrots and the onion are made by me, and because of their diversity it is very time consuming work.

Oma kookte in de zomertijd, als er geen kachel/fornuis aan kon, altijd op een petroleumstel. Dit miniatuur petroleumstel en de emaille pan zijn gemaakt door Aat Oukes (zijn website:  http://aatoukes.nl/ ) , het schilmesje is van Miniatur Puppenwelt Wengen (hun website is: https://shop.greatnet.de/cgi-bin/shops/s000289/index.cgi ), de weckpot is van Stella, (haar website: http://www.stellaquepassa.nl ) en de blauw geruite handdoek is gemaakt door een Nederlandse miniaturiste, waarvan ik me helaas de naam niet meer kan herinneren (wie weet 't wel?).

In summertime, when the hearth/stove were out of order, my grandma always cooked on a oil stove. This miniature oil stove and enamel pan are made by Aat Oukes (his website: http://aatoukes.nl/ ), the peeling knife is from Miniatur Puppenwelt Wengen (their website: https://shop.greatnet.de/cgi-bin/shops/s000289/index.cgi ), the glass jar is from Stella, (her website: http://www.stellaquepassa.nl ) and the blue checkered towel is made by a Dutch miniaturist, but since I’ve bought it years ago I unfortunately can’t recall her name.

Hier in Nederland doet de herfst zijn intrede, de aardappeloogst moet nog beginnen, maar het loof wordt al bruin. De stukken land, die grenzen aan de akkers zijn ingezaaid met wilde bloemen om de bijen te ondersteunen, zijn uitgebloeid, en over ongeveer een maand zal de mais worden geoogst.

Fall is coming here, in the Netherlands, the harvest of potatoes has to begin yet, but the leaves are already colored to brown. The pieces of land, that borders to the fields, which were sown with wild flowers to support the bees, are blooming out, and in about a month corn will be harvested.

Wortels en kruiwagens / Carrots and wheelbarrows

Na het schilderen van verschillende dunne laagjes is hij droog en mag nu hier bekeken worden….. mijn nieuwe “oude” kruiwagen  ;O! Net zoals bij de andere kruiwagen kunnen de schotten aan de zijkant eraf gehaald worden en kan er van alles op vervoerd worden.

Bieten, maar ook wortels! Ik heb wortels gemaakt in geel en oranje en zoals je weet hebben verse wortelen loof op hun koppies. Daar ben ik een hele poos mee bezig geweest en twee opties bleven over, kijk maar:

After painting several of thin layers he is dry and he may be seen here……..this is my new “old” wheelbarrow ;O! As with my other old wheelbarrow, the side panels can be taken off and all kind of things can be transported.

Beetroots, but also carrots! I’ve made carrots in yellow and orange and as you know fresh carrots do have leaves on their heads. So, I’ve been busy for awhile with inventing leaves for carrots and now I can show you two options, here take a look:

….maar mijn vraag aan jullie is: welke optie is de beste? Ik heb dezelfde vraag op Facebook gesteld en veel mensen zeggen dat het loof van de gele wortel het beste was. Zijn jullie het daar mee eens ;)?

…. but my question to you is: which option look best? I’ve asked the same question on Facebook and many people say that the leaves of the yellow carrot are the best. Are you agree with this ;)?

Een paar dagen geleden heb ik op de markt een bos paarse gladiolen gekocht, maar vandaag was het hier een donkere dag, dus helaas geen warm zonlicht om die mooie paarse kleur te kunnen laten zien.

Oude kruiwagen en rode bietjes / Old wheelbarrow and beetroot

Afgelopen weekend was het prachtig zomerweer, dus ben ik buiten met hout in de weer geweest. Een paar jaar geleden heb ik van iemand een paar (rode) cederhouten latjes gekregen, waarvan ik al eerder een antieke/oude miniatuur kruiwagen hebt gemaakt. Op de laatste DHN-show vroegen een paar bezoekers of ik er eentje te koop had, dus ben ik er nu eentje aan het maken, die te koop is op de volgende DHN-show aan het eind van september.

Om buiten te werken heb ik een oude tuintafel, dus was ik, met zo’n 22 graden lekker in het zonnetje, buiten aan het werk……prima vanwege het schuur- en zaagstof, dat vrijkomt bij het bewerken van deze cedarhouten (=hardhout) onderdelen :D.

Last weekend we had lovely summerweather here in The Netherlands, so I’ve worked with wood outdoors. A few years ago I’ve got from someone a few red cedar wood slats, of which I’ve made earlier an antique/old wheelbarrow. During the last DHN-show a few visitors asked me if I had one for sale, so now I’m making another one, it's for sale on the next DHN-show at the end of September.

For working outdoors I have an old garden table, so, with just 22oC degrees and enjoying the sun, I was working outdoors....good for getting rid of al the dust from the sanding and sawdust you get from the red cedar (hard)wooden pieces :D.

Een paar weken geleden toen het koeler weer was, heb ik van Fimoklei een aantal rode bietjes gemaakt. De blaadjes zijn gemaakt van zijdepapier en ik heb wat wortelharen en grond toegevoegd.

A few weeks ago, when it was much cooler weather, I’ve made some beetroot of Fimo clay, (for more information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beetroot ). The leaves are made of silk paper and I added some root hairs and soil. 

Als display heb ik mijn eerste oude kruiwagen gebruikt, die ik al eerder had gemaakt. De nieuwe wordt bijna hetzelfde, maar voor een unieke miniatuur moet er wel wàt verschil in zitten, hè ;O!?

As a display I’ve used my first old wheelbarrow, which I’ve already made before. The new one will get almost the same look, but for an one-of-a-kind miniature, a bit difference has to be there, isn’t it ;O!?

Nu is het tijd om de kruiwagen een oud uiterlijk te geven, dus komt er verf op tafel. Ik zie nu dat er nog een paar steuntjes bij het wiel ontbreken, dus…. ik ben weg ;)!

De tijd vliegt!! / Time flies!!

De zomervakantie is hier afgelopen, de kinderen gaan weer naar school en sinds vandaag ben ik weer aan het werk om nieuwe miniaturen te maken. Omdat ik slecht tegen de hitte kan, heb ik erg genoten van het heerlijke, koele zomerweer. Tja, daarover zal niet iedereen het met mij eens zijn...... ;O?!

Summer vacation is over, at least here in our region, the children are going back to school again and since this morning I’ve started working again at miniatures. Because I can’t stand the summer heat, I’ve enjoyed much of this cooler type of summer weather, which we’ve had here. Well, I guess that not everyone will agree with me about this....... ;O?!

Wat ik zoal gedaan heb gedurende deze zomervakantie? Nou, om diverse redenen heb ik eigenlijk niet veel aan miniaturen gewerkt, maar er liggen nog wel wat miniaturen te wachten op afwerking.

What I’ve done during this summer vacation? Well, due to all sort of reasons, I haven’t worked pretty much on miniatures, but there are still some miniatures in awaiting for their finishing touch.

Toch heb ik wel iets nieuws om jullie te laten zien, al zijn deze Cherokee rozen vorige winter al gemaakt. Anya Stone vroeg mij, via Facebook, om wat van deze soort rozen te maken.

But I still have something new to show to you, although I’ve made them last winter: Cherokee roses.  Anya Stone asked me if I could make her some of these sort of roses.

Ik had echter nog nooit van deze rozensoort gehoord, dus moest ik het doen met de foto’s die ik op het internet heb gevonden. Anya heeft deze Cherokee rozen gebruikt als display voor haar aardhommelkoninginnen (Bombus terrestris), ze heeft prachtige foto’s van onze samenwerking op haar website gezet, en wel hier:

Ik vond het een hele eer dat Anya mij heeft gevraagd om deze rozen voor haar te maken en ik heb haar toestemming gekregen om hier (op mijn blog) bekend te maken dat je ook zelf deze aardhommels kunt gaan maken n.a.v. een tutorial, die op haar website staat.
