Jurken voor (mini) oma / Dresses for (mini) grandma

In the 50s, my grandmother used to wear simple-made dresses, for various reasons. Of course because a woman didn't have any luxury in the years after WW II, but also because she was a farmer's wife. In addition, because of her religion, she wore simple-made clothing in muted colors, not too short and often with a long sleeves and closed high at the neck (see photos).

Firstly I dug into my stash of fabrics, because years ago I bought in a quilt shop for a few euros a big plastic bag filled with fabric leftovers. I dug out the bag filled with those fabrics with very tiny dessins and now it nicely came in handy ;). I first used a fabric left over that had a slightly too large pattern, partly because I first wanted to make a dress from my grandmother's younger years, of which she had a loving memory (her first meeting my grandpa).
This dress was still a bit colorful and was a bit more "chic", because my grandma was of good family ;).
Than I made a simple check pattern, the squares measure 5 mm by 5 mm. I've placed and photographed the pattern exactly on the squares (10mm x 10mm) of my cutting mat, so if anyone wants to use the pattern, go ahead.

Than the pattern was layed on the fabric and cut (without seams), whereafter I sewed the dress together. Firstly the seam at the underside of the dress is glued by using Tacky Glue Clear Gel, than the seam in the middle is closed/sewn. I use a very fine needle, I ever bought it in a quiltshop. I’ll show you the steps of the sewing process of this dress by showing photo’s (also because my English knowledge about technical terms is not good enough for explaining it all).

The seams at the shoulders were closed/sewn, hereby I found out that this was not the most ideal way to do, more on this later…

Initially I wanted to sew the sleeves to the dress, but these extra seams would make the dresses too bulky. That's why I decided to glue them to the dresses. To keep the sleeves hanging downward, I fastened them with a small stitch (more on this later).

Now I had to try to get a hanger in the dress, for hanging it in the closet, in order to see if it would not be too big. It looked well, but the dress was not exactly hanging naturally on the hanger and in the closet...... now I had to think about how I could do that.

Now it was ready for sewing a (I used a paper punch for this) button on the backside of the dress. When I wanted to make a collarret, I came up with the idea to use a (paper lasercut) lace collar, which I bought, during a show in Arnhem, of Art of Mini, website: https://www.artofmini.com/

After this dress I made two more dresses: a light apron dress to wear in (hot) summer, and a dress in moody chocolate brown with flowers, for wearing in autumn.
A fourth, blue, dress is made for wearing all seasons ;).

The inner sizes of the closet are quite small: 37 mm by 55mm, how can I ever get more of these dresses in this small space??

So, to get the dresses to fit in the closet and to shape the fabric in a naturally falling way, I decided to use "crackfree" (fabric stiffener). I have had that spray can in my closet for years, especially for these kinds of mini purposes.

I made these dresses on a different way as the first one, here above I show you how I did the shoulders and how I inserted the hanger before using the fabric stiffener. This time on a different and more easy way.

I made these dresses on a different way as the first one, I’ll show you how I did the shoulders and how I inserted the hanger before using the fabric stiffener. This time on a different and more easy way.
I only put glue on the top of the hanger and than I put down the hanger on the fabric. Then I first fold and glue the shoulder part of the back pattern to the hanger, and only then the front shoulder, making sure that this seam ends exactly on top of the hanger. Only then I glue the sleeves to the dress, and I stick the whole sleeve a bit more downwards, so that you can easily stiffen the fabric with the textile stiffener and the whole does not get too bulky. I hope I've explained everything a bit clearly...?

I also made some fake shirts and pajamas (pieces of folded and compressed fabric) to put on the shelf above the clothes rail. Now I will make some more clothes to fill the closet and see if I can also make some pair of shoes for grandpa and grandma. They usually wore (wooden) clogs during work at the farm, but both of them also had a neat pair of shoes for “funerals and marriages”.
Here, in the Netherlands, the virus flares up again. More people are sadly more and more ignoring the measures of the government (especially the younger ones), so here again my urgent call:
stay safe, take care of each other and yourself, but please, give each other enough space indoors and outdoors (here it is social distance of 1,5 mtrs)!
Thank you for your kind comments, have a great week!

Dear Ilona, I have fallen Way behind on my comments!!! I don't know how this has happened... unless you are speeding up your posts? LOL! I truly am always amazed at the details you put into "everyday" minis... and these dresses are a great example! The tiny hangers are perfect! The tiny buttons are perfect! The different sleeves and cloth patterns are perfect! And the way you make them "drape" like real is beyond perfect!!! Your mini Grandma is lucky to have you filling her wardrobe! LOL!!! And what fun it is to finally, after many years, pull out the bag of cloth and find the perfect scraps!!! I just Love everything about your Grandparents and their Farm!!:):)

I love the pictures of your grandparents -a reminder perhaps of simpler and kinder times. The dresses are just perfect and reflect so well those years. We are facing the same kind of difficulties - stay safe and hope for better days not too far away.

Dear Ilona, I have been looking forward to seeing the clothes you are making for your mini grandma since your last post and the dresses are simply fabulous. Isn't it odd how glued seams are so much less bulky than stitched ones? The idea of putting the coat hanger in as part of the making-up process is fabulous. I will remember that little trick for the future. I am glad Grandma now have a wardrobe with dresses suitable for any occasion and that Grandpa has a cozy pajamas for chilly nights.
Hugs

I can imagine how much she loves that you are replicating the farm in miniature, and taking such great care to honor all of the details of her life! The dresses are wonderful, and the fabrics couldn't be more perfect!

I wish that my closet was a tidy and all my hanging clothes as easily accessible and ready to wear as these that you've fashioned for your Beloved Grandmother, Ilona! :D
You technique for building the shoulders of the dresses over the hanger was a Great Idea as was your use of the fabric stiffener to get them to drape properly in the cupboard, and they look Fab all grouped together!
I love the folded clothes on the top shelf too especially the buttons on the pajama top!

Bises.

Did I ever tell you before that your attention to EACH and EVERY detail never stops to amaze me??? ;O) The clothes turned out wonderful and look just perfect in the wardrobe. And it made me smile that you did not forget about dresses for every season and occasion... and of course there had to be a blue one. And not to forget the apron dress - so typical, in Germany they're called "Kittel" or "Kittelkleid" and my Grandma (from my Mother's side) always wore them in the house. It was also wonderful to see the old photos - your grandparents in their Sunday's best with their cows... so touching.

Around here the infections are rising too which is really no surprise, we're fearing for worse now that the people come back from vacation. Two days ago it was announced that 6 employees of a diner at Kiel's Central station were Corona positive - surprisingly the officials found out now that many customers were writing down their mandatory personal data in a bad hand writing or were using wrong names...

Oh, and I can't leave without saying congratulations for being the proud and happy Grandma of a wonderful 2 years old boy. ;O)

Hugs

Your coat hangers in your previous post are great and it's wonderful to see them with dresses in this post. You did a perfect job with the dresses and I also like the shirts on the shelf.

The interior of your wardrobe looks so realistic, Ilona! I love your grandmother's clothes and I think I would even wear them myself. Practical, simple, and long-lasting. I've been reading about slow fashion a lot lately. Environmentally conscious people are returning to using only natural materials for their clothing and they use it until it wears out. I've always worn my favorite clothes until they fall apart; I think if your grandma was alive now she would be a fashion icon. In future I'm going to adopt dresses like your grandma's!
