“Schaapscheerders kou” / “Sheep shearer’s cold”

This week summer will start here in The Netherlands, but according to me summer has already started for about two months ago ;). After the extreme warm temperatures of these last two months, we now have to deal with the so called ‘sheep sheare’s cold’. Well, for me personally I’m very happy with this cold weather, because I absolutely can’t stand the heat. Who want to read more about the term ‘sheep sheare’s cold’ see here for more information:
Due to the heat I was sitting in a dark workspace and therefore I couldn’t see well the colors of the flowers (no daylight). That’s why I’ve been busy with something complete different than making miniature flowers/plants.

I’d seen on the blog of Sheila: http://shenandoahandstuff.blogspot.com/2018/06/its-sort-of-toss-up.html that she transformed bought furniture kits, into furniture of her liking. And because I’d also bought miniature furniture from Atelier Het Klein Mebelparadijs on a miniature fair, I started to give them a makeover in the style of how I wanted them.
Here are the kitchen chairs with a ‘reed’ chair seats, like how they were when I bought them. For the coloring process of these seats I’ve painted many layers of acrylic paint, very strongly diluted with water. I almost forgot taking pictures of how they looked like before painting, but you can still see it a bit ;).

I don´t know what sort of yarn is used for these ´reed´ seats of these chairs, but there is something synthetic in it. That was positive, because the yarn didn´t pick up all of the diluted paint, this made it shine for a transparent effect and I love it J.

I’ve also painted the wooden parts with diluted acrylic paint, first yellow ochre, than with different shades of brown.

On this photo you can see how the table was before it was edited…

Than it was time to transform the kitchen table, which had a table leaf in one piece.
But in the 50s my grandma had a kitchen table, excisting of different shelves as a table top, whereunder was a cutlery drawer and it had square table legs. So, I've adjusted the table.

The above photos show more or less the building up of the colors with the strongly diluted acrylic paint.

Between every layer of paint the table and chairs were sanded and lastly finished with a colorless cream wax for chalk paint.

Okay, after all the sanding the chairs are going up the table top in order to mop the kitchen ;)!
Thank you for your nice comments, have a nice week!

I love how they look! Those chairs are similar to something I grew up with and the color variations of your wood look so real on the table and chairs. Gorgeous!

I 100% share your feelings regarding the heat, Ilona, however I am glad to see the you're continuing to be productive in spite of the high temperatures.
The transformations of the table and chairs are Great and you've certainly demonstrated
the power of color, paint and Vision! The woven seats really DO resemble reeds and your coloration of the table top Looks Authentic as well- Grandmother will be Pleased! :D

First of all - LOVE your chairs and table. You did a great job transforming them. The colours you got on the table are lovely. Looks aged. We would have had chairs and tables like that in farmhouses years ago. Very nostalgic. Good job.

Secondly, I am with you regarding the heat of summer. We don't get much of it in Ireland, but if I visit Europe in the summer I wilt! Thank God for umbrellas and shade.

Liefs,

Veronique

They look so good Ilona. They look like they come straight out of an old farmhouse. And love the subtle finish of the cream wax.

It is 82 degrees here in the Northwest part of the United States today, and here I sit so grateful for the cool air provided by my air conditioner. I love the blue skies, and YES! More sunshine, please. But do keep the heat at 75 degrees with a gentle breeze!

The transformation of the chair seats and table are completely wonderful! You work wonders with paint, and you inspire me to break into some kits and play!

Great makeover for the table and chairs! I love the change.

We here have a long summer with some days over 85 degree temperature. Although I was born here, it's still very hard to endure but air-conditioners make it bearable.

Hugs, Drora

Bonjour Ilona,

Besos.

Dear Ilona, I am glad to hear you have had some relief from the too-hot Spring! We are just beginning to have some hot weather, it has been a cool spring for us, so I am glad to finally say "Summer is here"! But mostly I am glad to see that you have been able to keep busy in a dark room to keep yourself cool.... and the results are wonderful!!! Your farm-house table and chairs are so beautiful in an old-fashioned honest style! They look just perfect! The way you have "stained" the wood with the watered down acrylic paint is very clever and gives stunning results!!! I will be so happy when we can finally see the Kitchen these chairs and table will live in....!!! :) But no rush.... it can wait for the next hot spell when you must work in the dark! :):):) Meanwhile... I hope you have the kind of weather you Enjoy.... because we should all have some of that in the Summer! :):)

I suppose Grandma will spoil you with some lovely fruits from her garden (strawberries for example?) over yummy vanilla pudding as a thank you for your wonderful work. The effect you achieved with the layers of colour is stunning, the wood structure shows up so well. And although it's a nice side effect that the heat made you work on these incredible pieces of kitchen furniture it's just great that we're back to more convenient weather. It's the same around here and I enjoy it very much… and even more I'm thankful that we finally had rain. Hooray! Hopefully still in time to save my lawn… In Germany we're speaking just of "Schafskälte" (sheep cold)… but this week we're using the special term of Schleswig-Holstein: It's "Kieler Woche Wetter!" *LOL* For the sailing competitions it was perfect weather with plenty of wind... but for the entertaining parts like markets, fair and concerts it's… well… Kiel's Week Weather… ;O)

Hugs
Birgit

We also have sheep shearer's cold here in South Africa. And frost that kills the blossoms on the fruit trees. One can wait with the sheep, but the blossoms have their own plans, unfortunately.
Your kitchen furniture makeover is beautiful. I look forward to seeing you use the pieces in your photography in future!
