Het is nog steeds maandag, toch?? / It’s still Monday, right??

While I was figuring out how I could make the doors of my kitchen, I suddenly thought of an old laundry rack, as many people used to have in earlier days. I don’t know if my Grandma had one, but I just wanted to make one for her. It was also nice to play with, at least if it was not in use ;).

Elk deel is 5 cm breed en 7 cm hoog
Each panel is 5 cm wide and 7 cm in height

You’ll need: basswood slats of 2x3 and 2x5 mm, cocktail sticks, very thin wire and a piece of aluminum of a tea light.
The cocktail sticks are sanded down until they were 1 mm in thickness, my poor fingers!

For the tiny hinges, you bend a piece of aluminum (of a tealight) over a very fine prick pen, squeeze the ends with a pliers around the pen. You make two hinges per connection, which you connect with thin wire. I've used super glue for gluing the hinges on the wood, it was difficult, but I did manage!

After ensembling, I painted the laundry rack with water and soft pastel chalk, in a very thin layer. And for a finishing touch I repeated this process with a more dark color of soft pastel, so the whole got an old and used look. The tiny hinges got some touches of dark brown nail polish, because they were quite rusty ;O.

The laundry rack got me some bent rods, because it is an old rack and also just because it was possible, hehehe. The drying rack is foldable because I've made one stand 2 mm wider, just like this rack in RL actually has. This wider stand makes it possible to fold it together and store it.
Now a “delicate matter”, the underpants of Grandma, how to make it as laundry on the rack ;O.

For making the Grandma's underpants I’ve used a tiny piece of very fine cotton, I glued all of the seams with Tacky Glue and I also used hair spray (extra strong) to get a wet piece of laundry. While glue and hairspray were still wet, it was folded around a rod (for this purpose I made one extra) and clamped both together with a clambing tweezers/clothes peg, or something like that. The whole is put down on the central heating for drying very well. You can eventual also use a tiny piece of double sided self adhesive tape to glue together the laundry around the rod, but then it’s not possible “to get the laundry off the rack, after it’s dry” ;O….

Okay, the laundry is done and was hung to dry…..it’s still Monday, right??
So, it’s just in time and I’m still having fun, you too? ;O
Thank you for your nice comments, I wish you all a nice week!

"Twee emmertjes water halen…" / "Fetch two buckets full of water…"

This is a Dutch children's song (with a dance), it's about fetching water at a water pump. In The Netherlands everyone (still) knows it, but I’m afraid you abroad won’t..;O? This song is about getting water at a waterpump, for example a water pump, who is in the kitchen of my mini Grandma. I didn’t make the water pump (Phoenix/Warwick Miniatures), but I did make the cabinet, which surrounded the water pump in earlier days. It was for hiding it from the eye and protect it from all kinds of other influences.
On the above picture you can see the sink in my mini kitchen, and a loose water pump still next to it.

For making the cabinet of the water pump I used tongue spatulas, leftovers of linden wood and a piece of very thin wire for creating a hook.

At the above pictures you can see how I made the cabinet, how the hinges are made (of a piece of bias binding) and that I painted the cabinet with strongly water diluted acrylic paint in a ‘wood color’. Later on it was over painted by the typical greyish blue color, which was common in this sort of farms in that days. I’ve used chalk paint for this purpose and the whole is finished with a cream wax for chalk paint.

The water pump is painted with a matte enamel paint, and for creating an old and rusty look. Because the pump pumped groundwater, of course it stood on a pipe and it was fixed with supports against the wall/background. That tube is a piece of round wood with at the end a wooden bead as 'foot', with which the tube disappeared into the ground. A bit of cement will strengthen the foot ;).
For making a connection between the tube and the pump, I drilled a hole of 3 mm in the underside of the pump. Unfortunately the handle of the pump broke off, afte many attempts and efforts I glued it with super glue, but it’s still stays fragile.

Above you can see the pump in its new enclosure.

For cleaning, repairing and eventual replacement of the pump the cabinet can be opened with a small hook.

I hope I’m not boring you with my blogs about making miniatures for in my mini farm….;)?! Meanwhile I got back  my pleasure in making miniatures and personally I’m not bored at all ;O!!
Thank you for your kind comments, wishing you a lovely weekend!

Vroeg in de ochtend... / Early in the morning...

…is er gestommel in de keuken…
…there is clattering in the kitchen…

Grandma is taking the ash drawer with cinders out of the cooled down stove for emptying. Then she takes her cleaning stuff for polishing the stove. At first she takes a sheet of the sanding paper for sanding off all of the burnt bits form the stove, than a tiny ‘caterpillar’ of black lead paste comes out of the tube, followed by a good rub.

I can recall myself from my childhood very well this (morning)ritual, so I was thinking over of how I also could ‘blackening’ my miniature stove, as the housewifes were used to say in earlier time.
And because of that word ‘blackening’, I started scratching with a grafite lead pencil (2B, I didn’t had a softer pencil at hand) over the coal scuttle. It seemed it worked better after I used the grafite lead of the pencil, slanting on paper first and then scratching the lead pencil over the metal skin of the coal scuttle.
After good rubbing (with soft kitchen paper) over the graphite, there was appearing a gloss on the coal scuttle. I was just experimenting, but oh my, it really worked ;O!!!

Now my stove was not only dirty and greasy, but it also had that characteristic gloss :O)!!

The next thing I was thinking of was making a tube of stove polish in miniature, because this belongs to be in between the cleaning stuff of my mini Grandma, of course. Grandpa bought her already a new tube of stove paste, together with some sheets for sanding ;).
Wait, I’ll show you how I made the tube of stove paste. I cut the shape of a tube, of a length of 2 cm, from a wooden skewer ( I think it is soft birch wood, anyway it’s NOT bamboo), but unfortunately the cap came loose after cutting.

Than I painted it with silver colored nail polish and left it to dry very well!

In searcing for a cocktail stick I came across this one, the shape already looked like a tiny cap! After a bit of sanding at the topside, I first edited it with silver nail polish and after drying I covered the tip with black nail polish, creating a neck of a tube and a lid in one.
I’m so glad that I’ve decided to work a while for myself in miniature, there’re again popping up ideas in my brains and I’m so happy with it J!
A warm welcome to my newest followers, thank you for your kind comments.
I wish you all a very nice weekend!

Although outside the temperatures are now considerably above the average of February (here, in The Netherlands), in earlier times it could still getting pretty cold in this time of the year. Reason enough to give my mini Grandma a cooking stove, because in former times a good working stove was essential for a farmer's wife to be able to take good care of both people and animals.
I've bought the stove of Mr. Eijcking on a miniatures show in The Netherlands.

Because the stove looked too neat to my opinion, I’ve edited it with Humbrol/Revell enamel paint for model building. The black paint is a glossy and the brown color is a matte one. While I was painting, I mixed both sort of paints together, wet in wet and this is the result.
My stove looked now used and a bit messy, since there was cooked alot of fatty meals on it, which was quite common in those days at the farms ;).

Yet I was still not satisfied, because what is a stove wherein you couldn’t see a cosy fire burning? That doesn't work? Of my childhood I can recall how our stove was stoked with wood and coals, so why not trying to bring this back alive in my miniature stove?
BUT....the mini stove was soldered, closed at all sides, as the stove consists of seperate compartments. So, simply putting in a wood fire (bought of Nalladris) was not possible. But I so would love to get a fire in the stove, so I had to make a gamble: drilling holes in the underside of the stove.

(Sorry for the blurry picture, it's the only one I have from this stage)

With pliers I’ve cut of the excess of metal, but the edges still kept very sharp. The fire (and chip) are melted with some mini coal into one unit, whereon also the wire is for electricity and the whole was too big for the hole of 18x18 mm. I took a pair of pliers and carefully I've cut off some of the coal excess, taking good care for NOT damaging the chip in the unit!! If I maneuvered it oblique inwards the stove, the unit would fit in there, so I did and it worked. So, I had to take good care for my fingers while placing the fire unit into the stove!
Than I thought that the stove had an open connection with the stove pipe for getting through the electricity wire, but no it was closed too. So I had to drill a hole in there too…..blind! I couldn’t see what I was doing because my fingers where in the stove and the drill too. But I got it done and it workes :)!
Since I needed both of my hands for both jobs, I unfortunately wasn't able to take pictures of this process, sorry.

My mini stove has also a drawer for the ashes (I don’t know the English term for it), so I’ve tried to make a ‘full’ ash drawer in miniature. I still had some DAS clay and I’ve edited a blob of clay with grey sand an soft pastel, I kneaded it and glued it in the drawer. It was quite a messy job, but in that time ash drawers also gave alot of dust, so I left it all there at the outside of my mini stove too ;O.

For strengthening the glow of the flames, I glued in a piece of orange organza ribbon, at the rear side of the part where the fire with the chip are.
Now the stove of my mini Grandma is ready for using it: poke the fire up, Grandma ;)!
Thank you for your kind comments, have a nice weekend!
