Nu de dagen gaan lengen… / Now that the days are getting longer…

… betekent dat de verlichting in huis weer eerder aangaat. Het wordt duidelijk echt herfst hier. Omdat ik maar heel licht miniwerk mocht doen van m’n artsen en fysiotherapeut, had ik in de zomer wat setjes gekocht van Sun Lemmens ( www.nalladris.nl ), waaronder deze gloeipeertjes. Graag had ik gezien dat se op hun voortreffelijke verlichting pasten maar nee, helaas. Wat ik ermee zou gaan doen was toen nog niet duidelijk, wel dat ze voor de boerderij waren gekocht. 

… will mean that the lights in the house come on earlier again. It’s definitely autumn here in The Netherlands. Because I was only allowed (by my doctors and physiotherapist) to do very light mini work, I bought some sets from Sun Lemmens ( www.nalladris.nl ) in the summer, including these light bulbs. I would have liked them to fit in their excellent lighting, but unfortunately no. What I was going to do with them was not yet clear at the time, but I did know that they were destinated for the farm. 

Nadat ik ze met transparante gel nagellak had bewerkt en een messing randje en zilverkleurige onderkant had gegeven, lagen ze maar rond te zwerven op mijn werktafel. Schepje (mijn sneeuwpopbeertje gemaakt door Birgit ( https://biwubaer.blogspot.com ) vroeg of ik er een doosje voor wilde maken, zodat mini Oma ze kon opbergen in de meterkast….

After I had edited them with transperent gel nail polish and given them a brass edge and silver bottom, they were just lying around on my work table. Schepje (my snowmanbearie made by Birgit ( https://biwubaer.blogspot.com ) asked if I wanted to make a box for them, so that mini Grandma could store them in the electricity meter cupboard….

Na de beurs in Houten begin september kwam ineens het plan in mij op om een ouderwetse meterkast te maken, zo eentje die ook in de echte boerderij van mijn grootouders stond. Ja stond, want elektriciteit komt via een kastje het huis in en met buizen, waarin de bedrading zit, door het huis ging om ruimtes in huis te voorzien van elektriciteit. Die buizen en het kastje, de stopcontacten en lichtschakelaars waren gemaakt van bakeliet. Meer info: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakeliet

Dus moest er een bouwplan komen.

 

After the fair in Houten early September, the plan suddenly occurred to me to make an old-fashioned electricity cupboard, like the one that stood in my grandparents' RL farm. Yes, stood, because electricity comes into the house via a box and with pipes, in which the wiring is located, went through the house to provide rooms in the house with electricity. So a construction plan had to be made.

Terwijl ik revalideerde heb ik in stukken en beetjes mijn werkkamer en zolder opgeruimd, over deze monsterklus heb ik anderhalf jaar gedaan 😖. Dat kwam nu goed van pas, want ik heb allerlei soorten hout, MDF, latjes etc. teruggevonden 😊.
MDF 1,5 mm dik en latjes van 4 x 4 mm werden gebruikt om de constructie voor de meterkast te maken. Verder een soort van ronde houten stengels, ooit gevonden in de kringloop, zwarte en witte aluminium dingetjes, ooit gekregen, ik weet hun benaming niet en 3 mm kraaltjes, een bloemenponsje, witte nagellak en sieradenlijm.
 
While I was recovering I cleaned up my workroom and attic bit by bit, this monster job took me one whole year and a half 😖. That came in handy now, because I re-found all kinds of wood, MDF, slats etc. 😊.
MDF 1 mm thick and slats of 4 x 4 mm were used to make the construction for the meter cupboard. Furthermore round sanded sort of wooden stems, once found in the thrift shop, some black and white aluminum thingies, once received, I don't know their actual name and 3 mm beads, a flower punch, white nail polish and jewelry glue.

De achterwand is een 1 mm dik MDF plaatje waarop de kast en de buizen komen, die vanuit die houten omkasting via de muren naar alle ruimtes in de boerderij liepen.

The rear wall is 1 mm thick MDF on which the cabinet and the tubes will come, which ran from that wooden cupboard via the walls to all the rooms in the farm.

De rest van de kast kan pas gebouwd worden als de meter en de buizen zijn gemaakt, geverfd en geïnstalleerd. Voor de bakelieten stoppen zijn die zwarte dingetjes gebruikt, waarvan ik het aluminium pijpje aan de bovenkant eraf hebt geknipt met een tangetje. In die zwarte dingetjes zijn eenzelfde witte dingetjes, in een maatje kleiner, gelijmd. Op die witte stoppen heb ik plastic rondjes (3 mm in diameter) gelijmd met sieradenlijm, wat uiteindelijk redelijk recht en doorzichtig werd. 

The rest of the cabinet can only be built once the meter and the tubes have been made, painted and installed. For creating the bakelite plugs, those black thingies were used, of which I cut off the aluminium pipe at the top with a pair of pliers. In those black thingies, the same white things, in just a size smaller, were glued. On those white plugs I glued plastic circles (3 mm in diameter) with jewellery glue, which eventually became straight and quite transparent.

Nadat ik de meter zwart had geverfd ben ik er met bruine beits overheen gegaan om die typerende kleur van bakeliet te verkrijgen.
De aan-/uit schakelaar is gemaakt van zwart papier en het gebruik van een bloemenponsje, vier laagjes op elkaar gelijmd en een gaatje erin geprikt waardoor een kettelstift is gestoken.
De porseleinen koppen van de zekeringen zijn gemaakt van 3 mm ronde kraaltjes, en met witte nagellak bewerkt.
De elektriciteitsbuizen zijn aangesloten en met zogenaamde zadeldekjes vastgezet (=klemmetje om de buis).
Let op, voorzichtig: de stroom staat nu AAN ⌁😉!!!

After I painted the meter black I went over it with brown stain to get that typical brownishblack bakelite color.
The on/off switch is made of black paper by the use of a flower punch, four layers are glued together and a hole poked in it through which a head pin is inserted.
The porcelain heads of the fuses are made of 3 mm round beads and finished with white nail polish.
The electrical conduits are connected and secured with so-called "saddle covers" (= clamp around the conduit).
Note, be careful: the power is now ON ⌁😉!!!

Met betrekking tot de foto onderaan mijn vorige blogpost, ik was iets te voorbarig met het plaatsen en kan nog niet zeggen wat het is.
Het heeft te maken met het heugelijke feit dat ik voor de tweede keer oma zal worden over ongeveer twee maanden 🩷 dus wil ik een babykastje maken voor mijn toekomstige kleinkindje.

Regarding the picture at the bottom of my previous blogpost, I was a bit too early with posting it and can't say what it is yet.
It has to do with the joyful fact that I will become a grandmother for the second time in about two months 🩷 so I want to make a babyroom kabinet for my future grandchild.
