Wat boodschapjes gedaan… / Done some shopping…

After I finally (!!) had assembled and definately glued together the basement of my mini farm, I thought it was time to put some miniatures in it. Just to see what it would look like, and this is a good excuse to play around with the nice things that will be in this basement, well, you know what I mean…. 😊.

Sorry for the blurry picture, this was the only one from before treatment😉

Going through my storage boxes, filled with tiny boxes full of stuff I bought a long time ago for this farmhouse project, I came across these beautiful storage tins again, they are made by the Mr. Cees Eijking. This gentleman made the most beautiful miniatures, such as storage tins, stoves and fireplaces and much more, and he and his wife participated in many Dutch miniature shows with his miniwork. As said I have had these tins for years, they are beautifully made, but not quite to my liking…

….what was “wrong” with it? Well actually nothing, they were just too beautiful and too new. Now I hope Mister Cees doesn't read my blog, because what I did with his wonderful storage tins………well, see for yourself.

As I wrote in my previous blog post, I had weathered a number of miniatures in my glass jar, filled with vinegar and steel wool gunk. After I put these metal storage boxes on the shelves in the basement, I thought they should have the same treatment too. But not knowing how it would work out, I first took only one, for creating damaged corners on the paint, using a very fine nail file, I carefully made some dents in it with the back of a wire cutter and then put the whole metal box in the glass jar, filled with vinegar/steel wool liquid, for approximately 24 for hours.

Here you can see well the difference, of before (at the right) and after (at the left) the treatment.

I'm sure my grandparents must have had some of these storage tins in their basement, because before they bought the farm, they had a grocery store in another village. Those storage tins were part of the shop interior at the time.
Also at my parents' house there were large storage tins in the cellar, in which the dry goods were stored, such as custard powder, flour, semolina, tea and coffee.

In the meantime I have also found some of my mini groceries again, once bought at a miniature fair from Bert Aarts (Dutch miniaturist), unfortunately I don't think he has a website/shop. But if anyone does have a link for me: please, let me know!
Thank you for your kind comments, I wish you a happy (Father's) Sunday and a new week ahead.

The tins turned out great! Sometimes it's so hard to 'spoil' something perfect even if the setting calls for it.

Glad you bit the bullet and tried it. The patina is wonderful and the little dents make them look lovingly used.

Hope you're doing well!

Dear Ilona,
As always when I see your pictures, I have to remind myself this is a mini farm and not the 'real thing'.
Even with just these few items the shelves, it is already looking fabulous.
I have only tried the vinegar trick once, and it was not that successful. Your tins have come up superbly worn, so it give me hope that I will be able to age metal too.

You have aged these tins to perfection, Ilona. As nice as they were before the treatment, now they look like much loved and much used containers which is much more fitting for Granny's storage. Beautiful job. - Marilyn D.

Great boxes, and I like the aged look you gave them. It would have been odd to see new boxes in the basement as the old generation kept and used things for a very long time.

Dear Ilona, those tins are amazing! The perfect metal-work and then the brilliant "aging" process! I would not have dared... but as they say, "nothing ventured... nothing gained" And clearly you gained the perfect aging technique! And now I look forward to seeing the rest of the "food" you found! :):)

The tins look stunning, they came out of your treatment looking perfectly aged and in style for a farmhouse.
Keep well, dear Ilona, and stay safe.

I suppose it took a very deep breath before starting to age these stunning, awesome tin boxes... but it had to be done because this kind of storage boxes being always in use would never look like coming right out of the factory. Wonderful job with the aging - and I have no doubt even the artisan Mr. Eijking would appreciate the result. How could he not - and in the end... now you owe them and you can do with them whatever you want. Turning them from beautiful to absolutely stunning is every owner's right. *LOL*

I've really enjoyed to see the shelves starting to get filled... and I had to smile about the package of Van Houten. This brought back some childhood memories... the cacao powder from that brand was hard to get in Kiel... but it was so worth the hunt for it... yummy! ;O)

Those metal containers are great, such a good purchase. And I think you have done a terrific job with them as well, as always. Big hugs.

The 'new' tins look just right for the cellar, Ilona, and I don't think your alterations did them an injustice at all. It is just a matter of how and where you want to use them. I always have a difficult time finding properly aged and realistic miniatures.
My great-grandmother lived on a farm between the two world wars. Everything was scarce, and nothing was ever thrown away. She could also do anything with her hands, from building brick walls to making things from metal. In those days, one would buy lamp oil (we call it paraffin) In large metal cans with a metal screw cap in one top corner. Grandma used to cut those cans open alnong the sides and wash them out. By patching two cans together, she made metal bins with lids for storing dry goods. To this day, my mother has one of those bins and she uses it for storing flour.

Tienen unas formas preciosas.
