Waarover ‘kakelen’ zij….? / What do they 'cackle' about....?

After WWII it became clear that in The Netherlands the food production had to be a very high priority, for having sufficient, good and affordable food.
So Dutch farmers were stimulated by the gouvernement to produce food on large scale and for those reasons my grandpa builded a large chicken coop, so grandma was able to keep a lot more chickens for eggs. Here, on the above picture of the 50s, you see my grandma while she was feeding those chickens.

During the DHN-show in last September someone asked me if I coincidental had a roast chicken, but sadly I didn’t. Moreover, I’d never made before a chicken (of clay) in miniature.
And because I was coughing so much these past weeks, I started with something that didn’t flew away so easy....so I’ve now made a chicken, out of Fimo clay 😊.

Want to see my first chicken in miniature…?
Don’t laugh, she became way too small (15x15x12 mm), it’s more a dwarf hen. It's a bit like: just one bite and the chicken is gone. See here above!

(hier is 't sterk vergroot / here it's greatly enlarged)

And because I found a chicken alone was not enough, I made some cut-into-pieces potatoes and sliced winter carrot (large sort of carrot), just like my grandma would do. So, hoppa, in the roasting pan, a while on the stove and ready is the roasted chicken in mini!!

(Poten zeer sterk vergroot / Paws extra greatly enlarged)

One thing led to another, there was asked for 3 chickens in total, so I baked three very "weighty" ladies of clay 😉
They look healthy, absolutely not like "over-fed" chickens, no thank goodness, this sort of chickens didn't exist then in the 50s, at least that was not common....

But taking pictures of these roast chickens wasn’t that easy, firstly because of the shiny layer of fat, and secondly they always did lie in a way you think "hmmmmm".
How could I ever post a neat picture of these ladies on my blog 😉?
Luckily this tiny problem solved itself when I desperatey stood up from the table, and I accidently bumped against the table edge. Thereby the tiny chicken fell on her buttocks and stayed sitting that way for a few seconds. YES, that was IT!!
All of the chickens are now sitting neatly around the plate with the cut-into-pieces potatoes and winter carrots and that’s looking very cozy too, isn’t it? And eh, what do they ‘cackle’ about…😉!?

Well, all the joking apart, I really had to try to make a fresh slaughtered chicken too. Because when you’re roasting a chicken in your miniature kitchen, you firstly have to slaught one (okay, or buy one, if you’re just like me not such a hero in killing animals 😉).
It is not finished yet, I’m still thinking about the way how I’ll get that yellowish layer of fat on the skin of this chicken body, since weeks I’ve been racking my brains about it, but no result yet.
By the way, this was the chicken, who I was baking in my 1:1 oven just before Christmas, do you remember?

I still had some selfmade mini apples on my table, let's see if they fit...yess 😉!

Oh dear Ilona, the 'ladies' sitting and cackling around the plate of chopped veggies made me laugh so hard. Thank you for making me smile this morning.
The chickens are just magnificent and I have no doubt you will come up with a great solution to finish the fresh bird.
Happy Birthday

Very happy birthday, Ilona!
I think other people are often entertained by the way we amuse ourselves while making miniatures. Isn't it great to escape into a mini world?

Lol! In the United States, when the ladies get together to visit, it is often called a “hen party.” That is what came to mind when I saw your photo of the roasted chickens sitting around the plate of vegetables. Very cute. Happy Birthday!

I love them, great job..they look so fresh that I can smell them (I used to make food a long time ago but my workshop is a mess. if I can give you a tip I used a tooth brush on my turkey to make it look like the feathers had been plucked. then Id take some water diluted yellow for the fat and cover it with white chalk pastel ...I didn't take a photo of it but it turned out well.

enjoy yourself

You have perfected both the raw and the roasted coloring! The roasted chickens and the veggies look good enough to eat! Silicone rubber may make some good fat and would be fun to experiment with!
Hope you had a very Happy Birthday!

Lieve groet,
Roelie

I have a clear idea what it is that these very special ladies are cackling about - without any doubt they're pointing out how incredibly talented you are. And even better - what a wonderful sense of humor you have. *LOL* This photo with the ladies around the vegetables is priceless! And every single chicken you made, whether tall or small, whether roasted or not, is looking awesome. But I really need to mention that your carrots blew me away! Absolutely stunning work! And I loved to see the photo of your darling Grandma.

I hope you're feeling much better in the meantime and that you've had many lovely moments and calls at your birthday - although you've been in "quarantine".

Hugs
Birgit

Dear Ilona, I have fallen behind in my blog reading and commenting! Your chickens look amazing! And even the first little one... just call her a "Cornish Hen"! But seriously, I LOVE the photo of your Grandma feeding her flock... that is such a gorgeous and heart-warming picture! Meanwhile, I am sure the chickens are cackling about the delicious dinner they are getting! (It is a good thing they can't see into the future!) I hope you are getting better and will be coughing and sneezing less and less, even though that has caused this great diversion into "cackling" with the hens! (You have mad me "cackle" over the picture of the baked hens around the plate!) :)
