Je raadt nooit wat er gebeurde… / You’ll never guess what happened…

Earlier this year a heavy storm destroyed my old birdhouse. And because we have permanent tenants of this lovely residence, a pair of Eurasian blue titmice who breed in there every year, I had to visit the garden centre and buy them a new bird house for the homeless ;).
I not only found a new bird house, of an other model this time, but also a wonderful booklet about garden birds, illustrated by the famous Dutch illustrator Marjolein Bastin and a (1:1) big bird house in the style of the same illustrator. In their own way they all were my sources of inspiration for building such a wonderful bird house too, but than in miniature of course!

Looking at the following pictures you can see how I built it.
The roof is built from thick paper, because of the total weight which will press on the base: just one vertical pole.

All pieces of real straw, which I had to cut even more fine (see my previous blog post), made together the thatched roof. So, there were a few right answers in the comments of my last blog: clever of you and nice that you’ve tried to guess the answer, thank you  J!
If you ever have tried to glue straw together you probably have noticed that it doesn't glue easy. In my case I had to use a UHU special glue.

The octagonal feed platform is made of a piece of wood, surrounded by, made to measure, small pieces of half-round wood.

The base of the bird house was a bit tricky to make, because I had to work at an angle, but I think it turned out well. For this job I've used round timber wood, which I cut into halves with a hobby knife.

In this phase I started giving a weathered look at both parts, you can do this better before gluing it together. This way you can get in every corner you want. I used soft pastels for this job.

A few years ago I’d made a string of peanuts, it’s made of Fimo clay. Well, you know: never throw away anything….

…..the same is for teeny tiny apple slices (made by me, out of Fimo clay), tiny real down feathers and tiny seeds of a real kiwi fruit ;).

My miniature Eurasian blue tit loves the new bird feeder, because it’s busy looking on the thatched roof for insects and feathers for their nest.

Zijaanzicht / Side view

Seen from above, there are already a few lichen and bird poo ;D!

This morning whilst I was taking some pictures of our new bird house, something suddenly happens that I didn't expect at all. Because if you want to photograph Eurasian blue titmice you have to be very, very quick and you als need a short closing time of the camera lens and I don’t have this function on my simple photo camera….

…… I really haven’t seen this happening with my own eyes and after taking two photos I went indoors for downloading them at the computer. It was than that I took a good look and saw this at the above picture, hahaha, it's absolutely a tiny miracle! I think it was their way to say 'thank you' for their new bird house :D!
Thank you for your nice comments, have a nice week!

Hi Ilona. I love your bird feeder! It is just fabulous and exactly like a full size one my dad build years ago. All the finishing touches are just delightful.
As for your real life garden birds.. just one of natures ways of showing appreciations.

Hallo Ilona,
Hoe prachtig!

Your bird feeder is stunning! I'd never guess what the straw was for in your previous post. I love the tiny birds and had to laugh at the marks they left on the roof.
The real birdhouse is wonderful. How lovely to be able to watch the birds and how wonderful one already appreciated your generosity and came to visit.
Hugs, Drora

Hi Ilona! I Love Marjolein Bastin's work too! Your new bird houses - both RL and mini - are gorgeous! And the bird feeder with the thatched roof is amazing! No wonder we thought you were cutting hay! LOL! And you have included all the RL details on the mini one!!! I am so glad your Blue Tit's are enjoying their new residence! And your tiny one is just awesome!!! As usual, I love everything you make!!! :)

I love your little birdfeeder, and how lovely that you managed to capture a shot of the titmice! The perfect surprise. We get so much pleasure from nature.

Well, it looks like the straw wasn't for "hay bales" after all but for the thatching on a lovely little bird feeder for your miniature garden, which I would say is far prettier to look at and admire than a bundle of straw! ;P
And seeing that the RL birds are accepting of your offering of a new home for them, must have felt Very Gratifying to your soul, Ilona and A BEAUTIFUL ENDING to your day! :D

I knew it!!! *doing-the-happy-dance* Didn't I say it before - yes, the straw was for something awesome! *smile* What a wonderful birdhouse... of course (because it was created by you) with not a single detail missing. And do I need to mention at all that I love your inspiration by Marjolein Bastin??? Wonderful work - and chapeau for having the camera at hand to catch your little tennant (who will pay you with downsizing the insects I suppose). It's so lovely that you're helping the homeless. ;O)

Hugs
