Slaap lekker, Sientje / Sleep well, Sientje

Finally I found some time for finishing the cupboard cabinet/ ‘bedstee’ for Sientje (to make it easier for reading this blog post from now I will name this cupboard cabinet: the ‘bedstee’). In the end I decided yet to paint the 'bedstee' in an old Dutch color, named ‘oxblood red’.
More information about this color oxblood red: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxblood
I've put the wooden rear side of the 'bedstee' together, the sloping roof part for the cabinet was painted in an imitation wood color and I’ve painted the wooden ‘ceiling’ above the bed with whitewash, this was usual in the past in a 'bedstee'. The use of the whitewash in a 'bedstee' was not only for a fresh look, but it was also an use for counteracting of blood mites (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dermanyssus_gallinae ).

The bed base for the 'bedstee' consisted of a number of shelves, on which the bedding was placed.

At the garden centre I found this kind of decoration material and I used it as 'straw'.

The bedding consists of: a flannel blanket to protect the straw mattress. This was a burlap bag filled with straw. Every year this straw had to be refreshed and it seems that it was lovely to sleep on......... but not if you have hay fever, like me ;)!
On top of the straw mattress there was a quilted blanket, filled with feathers, thereon a cotton bottom sheet followed by a cotton top sheet.  Finally, the duvet filled with feathers, or like here with tufts of wool and a thick quilted blanket: my patchwork blanket of a former blog post.

In earlier times people slept in half-sitting position, because sleeping in the supine position was associated with death. For that reason every ‘bedstee’ had firmly stuffed (with feathers) pillows.
The ‘bedstee’ was quite short: approximate 120-130 cm, there also was not much room to sleep. Very young children often slept in a cradle at the foot end, or in a sort of drawer underneath the ‘bedstee’ of their parents. Or they were sleeping with more (older) children on a row in one ‘bedstee’!! So, maid servants must also have shared their ‘bedstee’ with other maid servants, happily my Sientje now has one for her own use ;)!

Here are some close up picture, you can see the pillows standing against the wall and above the head is a small shelf to put on small stuff. At the foot end there was a chamber-pot, because in that time (1900-1910) the toilet often was outside, or it was too far from the ‘bedstee’, like in a canal house of 3 floors high. You can see that under this shelf there were some small iron hooks for hanging up a shawl, or a night cap….?

The bed curtains are made of very thin cotton and the curtain rod is a piece of round timber, on which I’ve sanded for many ‘hours’ to make it thin enough. After that it was painted with acrylic paint in a dark brown color and glossy varnished, so now the bed curtains can slide nicely on them.
The curtain rod is made of thin iron wire, I've bended it in an U-shape.

Here you see a chest, it is used as a step to climb into the 'bedstee', but one also did use a chair, or another step for this purpose.
This small wooden chest (found on a flea market) is painted with oxblood red paint and thereon I have tried to paint some flowers (according to the technique of folk art paintwork). After painting I’ve sanded it off a bit of the paint and I gave it an ‘used and old’ look.
On top of the painted chest I've placed a candlestick, it is made of a wick holder of a tea light.
In the candle holder you can see the burnt lucifers ......

Slaap lekker, Sientje :D!

Here you can see Sientje (a bit uncomfortable for the modern camera ;)) posing for her ‘bedstee’. She can clean up her personal stuff into the cabinet beside her ‘bedstee’.
Sleep well, Sientje :D!

I thank you for you comments on my non-miniature blog posts; as many of you I really have had no time for miniatures, because I had to do some gardening work and other RL things.
I wish you all a nice Sunday and week!

The Old Maid zei

It turned out fantastic! I love this bed and bedding! Great work, Ilona.

I think they needed that hay to keep them warm from the cold floor.

All you've said about sleeping in a row and hay was common over here too.

So beautiful!!! Very good idea. Hugs, Melli

And yet another miracle... ;O) The bedstee turned out fantastic and as usual you've put so much historical investigation to build it as a little glimpse into bygone times... Sientje will sleep well in her cozy bed, I have no doubt... This bedstee is quite inviting with the white colour (although chosen for good purpose) and the curtains. Our nothern German version, the Alkoven, are more like big dark cupboards... and they didn't belong to just one single person.

Hugs
Birgit

Hi Ilona! The bedstee has turned out beautifully! Full of nice little details, the chest is beautiful and 'aged' perfectly! It sounds like it was a bit of a luxury to have one all to yourself so I bet Sientje will be more than happy there!
Kind regards, Brian.

This is gorgeous. What an excellent job you made of it.

Ossenbloed rood is just beautiful for a bedstee! Just like the dark green you see on grachtenpand doors and windows. Must have a name too, but I can't think of it.

The chest looks like a proper old Hindelooper chest for her clothing. The whole scene is just perfect!

Feliz semana, besos:-)

Hello Ilona,
I am always so taken aback by your incredible miniature projects. The bed is fantastic. The realism you achieve, especially the wood beams in the closet and the mattress, are so well done and always look like museum quality work.
Big hug,

Your bedstee looks so realistic and cosy. I love the quilt on top, it matches the oxblood red perfectly. I look forward to seeing it in situ.

Geweldig!!!

Oh wow! What should I say? It is a masterpiece again! It is very realistic to the smallest detail.
On your blog you can not see only perfect masterpieces in EVERY post, but also learn a lot about the usual things in the past. Thank you for blogging. It is always a pleasure to visit your blog

Ilona, that's fantastic! It's so good that I can not even find the right words! Thank you for sharing with us the history of the "alcove". I love the chamber pot too!
Every detail and the whole amazing!

WOW! I love love love this =) I always think I hate history, like in school, I could not really pay attention to class when they start talking about people at year 1800 or so. They should have teach the class like you told a story here, with picture of furniture =) I love old furniture and houses. Every thing you do is so well made, and you really know your history, making things "right" to every detail! I love that!
I have a thing for old chests, I bought my first mini chest last year and I would love to start a little collection =) Your chest is wonderful!! Worn at the right places =)
I could go on and on about how lovely everything is, but I'll stop now ;) Great work!

Wow, Ilona, all the details are so Perfect! But I should expect that by now! LOL! You have chosen the exact color I had pictured in my mind.... it was used a lot here in the Colonial days, so our older houses are often painted with it. Your tiny quilt is just amazing.... and all the rest of the bedding too! I particularly like the tiny candle holder... and I Love that you show us what you used to make it! So Simple! I always wanted to sleep in a "cupboard bed".... but they are not common over here! As usual... I am so impressed with all your details!!!

I am very impressed with your work, the details are fascinating. I am glad l don't have a night pot on a shelf by my bed. I roll about a lot and would surely knock it down ;-).Sure your little maid will sleep very well, sweet dreams :-). Pam xx

You asked about the museum on my last post. It is an open air museum, the houses on my pictures are from Setesdal and very old. An old farm. Our old farm house looks a lot like the white farm house on the picture. The museum also has a miniature version of an old city and buildings from 1900. Pam x
