Oh, kom ‘r es kijken… / Oh, come and see…..

….is a well known Sinterklaas song in Holland. Today it is the 5th of December and this evening it is Sinterklaas-feast!
Last year I’ve showed you my self made Sinterklaas and Zwarte Pieten in miniature scale 1:12 on my blog, I took them out of the dust, just for today ;)!

Sinterklaas = Saint Nicholas

Zwarte Piet = Black Pete

De grote zak met kadootjes / The big bag with presents

Today I want you to show some of the candy of Sinterklaas, something that is not commonly known by many of my foreign readers. At the confectioners shop I bought some marzipan (I am very fond of it, yummy!), borstplaat=a kind of sugar, taai taai- a kind of cookies, pepernoten=a kind of cookies chopped up in little drops and other delicious candy. All of this candy is specially made by the confectioners for this time of the year and it is tradition since many years. In earlier days children got an orange and  speculaas (=a kind of cookie), when they were lucky, because there was not so much candy. Nowadays there is plenty of candy available in the shops, so take care, friends: take care for your health!
But this evening I don’t think of that ;)!

For everyone who celebrates Sinterklaasavond: a very cozy day and evening!
For those who don’t: oh, come and see……..my blog :D!!

Ilona

I heard about this celebration years ago from my Dutch friends and I understood from them that for children this is even more important than the actual Christmas Eve and Day, because of the presents and goodies!! In Finland we don't celebrate this, but it sure sounds fun. Hugs Sanne

Groetjes, Alexandra.

In Germany we celebrate the "Nikolaustag", too - but it's mostly for the kids and only in the morning. Like in Poland as Ewa already said kids (big and small) put one boot before the door to get it filled with candy or even little presents... if they've been nice. The naughty ones get a piece of coal... Thank you for telling about the Dutch way to celebrate it - hope you're having loads of fun with the family... ;O)

For me, the best thing about this season is learning how a universal (almost) festival like Christmas can still have so many different traditions with different culture.

Will you believe that even here, there is a small Dutch Community who celebrates Sinterklaas :). I just read that they even held one where Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet arrived in a boat at one of our marinas.

I think your dolls are just plain amazing. I especially love their faces.

Amicalement.

Dear Ilona, thank you for sharing. I didn't know about your traditions. Here in Poland all child waits for Santa Nicolaus 6th December. He comes with more gifts and secretly, when no one is watching, he hiding gifts under the pillow. I love this tradition! Santa Nicolaus been here yesterday, and only our dog Kokos seen his, because he barked:O))) Of course I did not see it never but my son found a gift under pillow.
Have a nice weekend!!
