Nee, geen drive-through, maar een drive-moooo! / No, not a drive-thru, but a drive-moooo!

Je zult maar heel klein zijn en op Koningsdag de koeien willen zien en niet uit je huis mogen. Hoe ga je dat tijdens deze crisis als ouders voor je kleintje oplossen?

In de omgeving van waar mijn dochter woont, heeft een boer iets verzonnen om zijn ambachtelijk gemaakte ijs (van de melk van zijn eigen koeien) toch te kunnen verkopen. Hij mist door de crisis veel inkomen en is een drive-moooo (in 't Nederlands: boeeee!) begonnen. Eerst rijd je langs de open stallen, waarin de koeien staan. Daarna kom je uiteindelijk bij een caravan, die de boer heeft omgebouwd tot winkel, vanuit deze winkel loopt een hellend stuk van een dakgoot rechtstreeks naar de klanten, die in hun auto blijven zitten wachten tot de bestelling klaar is. Als je dan, na contactloos betalen, je ijsje via de dakgoot hebt ontvangen, kun je langs de weilanden vol koeien terug naar huis rijden. Is dat even leuk, als je nog geen twee jaar oud bent, maar wèl de koeien wilt zien in de stal en de wei?? Mijn kleinzoon van nog geen 2 jaar oud heeft enorm genoten van zijn uitje met zijn ouders, en ook vele andere kinderen, iedereen keurig in zijn eigen auto én op afstand!!

(Opmerking: een drive-through is een plaats, of voorziening, waar men kan worden bediend zonder de auto te verlaten)

If you are very little and on King’s Day you want to see the cows but you’re not allowed to go outdoors. How will you solve this problem for your little one during this pandemic?

In the region of where my daughter lives, a farmer has found a creative way of selling his artisanal farm ice cream (milk is delivered by his own cows). Due to the crisis he is missing a lot of income so he now has started a drive-moooo!, a sort of variant of the drive-through. First you drive slowly along the open stables, wherein the cows are. Then you end up with a caravan, which the farmer has converted into a ice cream shop, your put your order there and you have to pay contactless by bank card. The ordered ice cream is put in paper cups and on a sloping piece of gutter, which runs directly to the customers, who remain in their car waiting for their order to be ready. When you have received your ice cream order through the gutter, you can drive back home passing the meadows full of cows. Isn't that fun, if you are not yet two years old, but you want to see the cows in the stable and the meadows?? My grandson of less than 2 years old thoroughly enjoyed his visit to the farm with his parents, and also many other children, everyone neatly sitting in their own car and therfore keeping the required distance!!

(Note: a drive-through is a place, or facility, where one can be served without leaving one’s car)

Gele lijnen waren met stoepkrijt gezet, zodat je met iedereen op gepaste afstand kon praten.

Yellow lines were put on the street with chalk, so you could have a chat on correct distance.

Vele andere mensen hebben Koningsdag gevierd op een eigen wijze, bijv. bbq-en met buren, niet in tuinen maar op straat vanwege het warme, zonnige weer, ook ik. Het was heel leuk, en ieder van ons heeft zeer goed de afstand onderling in acht genomen vanwege de Coronavirus pandemie (zie foto’s, die wazig zijn gemaakt i.v.m. de privacy).

Hierdoor heb ik nu niet veel in miniatuur om te laten zien. Ik ben momenteel druk met het decoreren van nog wat miniatuur hoeden, die ik over een paar dagen zal laten zien.

Blijf gezond, wees voorzichtig en zorg goed voor anderen en jezelf.

Lots of other people celebrated King’s Day (27th of April) on their own way, for example bbq-ing with neighbours, not in gardens but on the street due to the warm, sunny weather, me too. It was very nice, and all of us were taking the correct distance due to the Corona virus measures (see all photos, which are blurred due to privacy). Therefore I don't have much in miniature to show today. I am currently busy decorating a few more hats in miniature, which I'll show you in a few days.

Van het een komt het ander… / One thing leads to another…

Zoekend naar iets totaal anders kwam ik in een bewaardoos, die hoog op een schap stond, dit ding tegen. In eerste instantie had ik geen idee wat het was, maar er lag een plastic zakje naast met een A4-papier naast, iets dat de gebruiksaanwijzing voor ‘het ding’ bleek te zijn.

Searching for something quite different I came across a store box, stacked away on a high shelf, whereby I found this 'thing' in it. At first I had no clue what it was, but next to it was lieing a plastic bag with a piece of A4-paper, what appeared to be the instructions of how to use ‘this thing’.

Het was een mal van Hazel Dowd, om een strohoed te kunnen maken. Het moet jaren geleden zijn dat ik deze mal heb gekocht op een miniaturen show, want ik kan me niet meer herinneren bij wie, of waar dat was.

En ondanks dat ik met iets heel anders bezig was, besloot ik meteen de mal te gaan gebruiken en een miniatuur hoed te maken (en ook voor de broodnodige afwisseling in dezer dagen van lockdown). Nee, geen hoed van miniatuur stro, maar van hele dunne, katoenen stof, en voor de versteviging van de stof heb ik een mengsel van Tacky Glue met een drupje water gebruikt.

It appeared to be a mold of Hazel Dowd, for making straw hats. It must be years ago since I’ve bought this mold on a miniatures fair, because I don’t remember from who, or where.

And despite I was busy with something quite different, I instantly decided to use this mold for making a miniature hat (and for the highly needed variation in these days of lock down ;o)). No, not a hat of miniature straw, but of very fine, thin cotton fabric, and for the reinforcement of the fabric I've used a mixture of Tacky Glue with a drop of water.

Eerst heb ik de stof goed ingesmeerd met dit lijm/watermengsel, het snel over de mal getrokken, vast gezet met een elastiekje en daarna liet ik het geheel goed laten drogen. Maar toen ik de gesteven stof van de mal wilde afhalen, had ik niet in de gaten dat de bovenkant van de mal ietwat taps naar binnen toeliep en de stof er niet af te halen was zonder het te beschadigen.

Dat was de eerste poging, en ook de tweede verliep niet goed om die reden. Maar toen ik eenmaal door had waardóór het niet ging, kwam ik tot de conclusie dat er niets anders op zat dan de hoed in twee delen te maken: de bol van de hoed en de rand apart. Daarna aan elkaar lijmen en dan heb je een hoed ;O)!!

First I’ve smeared the glue/water mixture on the fabric, quickly pulled the fabric over the mold, secured it with a rubber band and then set it aside for letting it dry thouroughly. But after I tried to take the stiffened fabric away from the mold, I didn’t see that the crown of the hat slightly tapered inwards and that therefore I couldn’t get the fabric loose of the mold without damage.

That was my first attempt, and also the second one was a failure for the same reason. But after I knew what was going wrong, I concluded that there was no way to make a hat in one piece, so I had to make a hat in two pieces: the crown of the hat and the rim, each of them seperatly. After that I had to glue them together and finally you’ll have a hat ;O)!!

Ik kwam bij opruimen van mijn werktafel nog 3 witte mini roosjes tegen en samen met een wit zijdelintje (2 mm breed) heb ik mijn eerste hoed versierd. Van deze eerste hoed was de rand niet perfect afgewerkt, dus heb ik de rand eerst netjes bijgeknipt en daarna ook een zijdelint randje gegeven.

Whilst cleaning up my work table I came across 3 white miniature roses and together with a white silk ribbon ( 2 mm wide) I’ve decorated my first hat. At this first hat the rim wasn’t perfect, so I’ve cut off excess of the rim and than put a white silk ribbon at the edge.

Hier kun je de binnenkant van de hoed zien: bijna transparant! De rand veert mee als je hem oppakt, dus op de foto lijkt de hoed niet rond…..wat hij wel is ;).

Here you can see the inside of the crown: nearly transparent! The rim is slightly resilient, so on the picture it seems that the hat is not round……but it IS ;).

De miniatuur hoed is 33 mm in diameter, wat overeenkomt met een 1:1 hoed van bijna 40 cm in diameter.

The miniature hat has a diameter of 33 mm, which is converted to a 1:1 hat of about 40 cm in diameter.

In een bewaardoos heb ik even een model opgezocht, om de hoed te showen, helaas heeft het model geen kapsel/haar, maar daardoor kun je goed zien dat de hoed breed genoeg is om op een hoofd met haar te passen ;).

Er lijken deuken in de hoed te zitten, maar dat is niet zo. Dit wordt veroorzaakt door  het glanzen van de zijde en de lichtinval/schaduw.

Op bovenstaande foto’s kun je de hoed van alle kanten zien.

In a store box I’ve looked for a model, for showing the hat, unfortunately my model has no hair/hairdo, but therefore you can see well that the hat is wide enough to fit on a head with hair ;).

There seem to be dents in the hat, but it is not so. This is caused by the shine of the silk and the sunlight through the window/shadow.

On the above pictures you can see the hat from all directions.

Hier is het prachtig lenteweer, gelukkig mogen we in onze tuin ervan genieten. Laten we blij zijn met alle kleine dingen in het leven, die zijn samen heel belangrijk, vooral nù!!

Witte lelies / White lilies

Witte lelies stonden altijd al op mijn lijstje van bloemen, die ik ooit in miniatuur wilde maken.

Nu heb ik er een paar gemaakt, 3 stelen met daaraan verscheidene bloemen in diverse stadia van (min of meer) gesloten tot open.

White lilies have always been on my list of flowers that I once wanted to make in miniature.

Now I have made a few: 3 stems with several flowers on them in various stages from (more or less) closed buds to open flowers.

Eerst heb ik de knoppen en de bloemen gemaakt, wat nog niet gemakkelijk was: papier is recht en wil niet altijd "buigen" zonder kreukels en zeker niet zo als ik dat zou willen…

First I made the buds and the flowers, which wasn’t so easy to do: paper is flat and it is not always willing to "bend" without wrinkles and certainly not the way I want…

…daarna was het eindeloos kleine blaadjes knippen (in verschillende tinten), per steel zitten er wel 40 blaadjes op!

Gelukkig hoefde ik dat maar tot ongeveer de helft van de steel te doen, want omdat ze in de vaas worden gezet, verwijder je altijd de overtollige blaadjes, toch ;O) ?!

…after that there was the endless cutting small leaves (in different shades), per stem there are about 40 leaves on it!

Fortunately, I only had to do that to about half of the stem, because before they are put in the vase, you always remove the excess leaves on the bottom of the stem, right ;O) ?!

Ik had niet echt een geschikte vaas voor deze witte lelies, maar deze vaas paste er qua kleur mooi bij.

De foto hierboven was ineens helemaal verdwenen (en niet door mij verwijderd), heeft iemand enig idee hoe dat kan?

Het fotograferen van de witte lelies ging niet geweldig goed. Vanwege het felle zonlicht nu, is het wit zeer aanwezig, en bewerken van foto’s is nou niet echt mijn hobby ;O).

Taking good pictures of these white lilies didn’t also turn out so well. Due to the bright sunlight of today, the white color is “very present”, and editing pictures is not really my cup of tea ;O).

Eieren zoeken… / Searching for eggs…

In mijn jeugd werden er met Pasen altijd eieren gezocht, voor ons gebeurde dat vaak op de boerderij van mijn grootouders. De Paashaas (Oma) had (gekookte) eieren verstopt en wij, kleine kinderen, mochten ze gaan zoeken. Weet je hoeveel goede verstopplekjes er zijn buiten op het erf van een boerderij…?? 

Ik inmiddels nu wèl ;)!!

In my childhood we used to go for searching eggs with on the first Easter Day, for us this often happened at the farm of my grandparents. The Easter Bunny (Grandma) had hidden lots of (boiled) eggs and we, little ones, were allowed to go and find them. Do you know how many good hiding places there are outside at a farmyard….?? 

I do know now ;)!!

Mijn Oma had een grote kist, waarin de eieren van de vele kippen werden bewaard totdat ze verkocht werden. Ik kan me het niet herinneren dat ze een kleiner eierkastje had, maar voor eigen gebruik had ze er eentje in de kelder voor eigen gebruik..? Wij mochten absoluut niet in de kelder komen. 

Vóór dat het zoeken naar eieren startte op de eerste Paasdag, kookte Oma alle eieren in een grote pan, dus ze konden tegen een stootje.

My Grandma always stored the eggs, that were laid by the many chickens of the farm, in a big wooden box until they were sold. I can’t remind me a smaller egg cabinet, but maybe she had one in the cellar for eggs for personal use..? We were not allowed to go in the cellar. 

Before the search of eggs started on Easter Sunday, Grandma had already cooked all the eggs in a large pan, so they were not easily broken.

Nadat alle eieren gevonden waren en veilig in mijn Oma’s schort lagen, werden ze nageteld of ze er allemaal waren, want er mocht niet ergens een ei zijn blijven liggen (lees, ongewenst rattenbezoek). Daarna werd er met alle familieleden geluncht met, jawel: de gevonden eieren. 

De eieren die overbleven werden door Oma bewaard.

After all the eggs were found and were safely lieing in my Grandma’s  apron, she counted the eggs to see if all were found. Because it was not the good if one egg was still outdoors (read, unwanted rat visits). 

After than the whole family got to lunch with, of course: the found eggs. 

The eggs that were left were kept by Grandma.

Na het in elkaar zetten, heb ik het beschilderd met krijtverf en daarna met crème wax afgewerkt.

After I put it together, I painted it with chalk paint and than it’s finished with cream wax.

Vorige week ontving ik compleet onverwacht een pakje van mijn best blogvriendin, Birgit, kijk eens wat ze me toegestuurd heeft! Birgit heeft me heerlijke Paas lekkernijen gestuurd, inclusief die kleine, schattige chocolade kippetjes, lammetjes en konijntjes voor mijn kleinzoontje, zo lief van haar!! 

Maar Birgit zou Birgit niet zijn als ze ook nog aan iets anders heeft gedacht: ik kreeg een pakje Fimo Mix, om hard geworden Fimo klei weer zachter te maken, en dat is niet alles: ze stopte een doos latex handschoenen erbij in!!! Sinds dat de pandemie meer serieus werd in maart, dus nog in de beginfase, ben ik al gaan kijken voor handschoenen, vanwege mijn gezondheid. Ik was erg teleurgesteld dat ze toen al niet meer te vinden/bestellen waren, in heel Nederland niet, hetzelfde gold voor de mondmaskers en andere beschermende middelen. Dus die grote doos handschoenen maakte me erg blij, ik gebruik ze nu als ik naar buiten moet om gauw wat boodschappen te doen. 

Lieve Birgit, ik dank je vanuit de grond van mijn hart, voor alles, maar boven alles voor je vriendschap!!!

A week ago I completely unexpected received a package of my dear blogfriend, Birgit, look what she sent to me! Birgit sent me lovely Easter treats, including those little adorable choclate hens, lambs and bunnies for my grandson, so very thoughtful of her!! 

But Birgit was not Birgit if she thought about something else: I got a package of Fimo Mix, to soften the hard Fimo clay, and that’s not all: she included latex gloves!!! Since the pandemic got serious in March, so in quite a early phase I was out for looking for gloves, because of my health issues. I was very disappointed that I discovered that there were none to find/order, not in the whole Netherlands, the same is for mouth masks and other protective means. So, the big box of gloves made me very happy, I now use them when I’m outdoors for quickly doing some groceries. 

Dearest Birgit, thank you from the bottom of my heart, for all of this, but most of all for your friendship!!!

Probeer ondanks de omstandigheden zelf iets moois van dit Paasweekeinde te maken en probeer, ondanks het mooie weer, afstand te bewaren van elkaar.

Werken in mijn 1:1 achtertuin / Working in my 1:1 backyard

In elke sultanvaas (gemaakt door Henny Staring-Egberts) staat één groot, of een kleiner takje kersenbloesem

In each of the sultan vases (made by Henny Staring-Egberts) one large, or a smaller twig cherry blossom

Afgelopen weekeinde was het in Nederland erg mooi weer, de zon scheen heerlijk en de temperatuur was aangenaam. Dankzij de maatregelen (hier in Nederland!) dat je nog wel naar buiten mag in je eigen tuin, of op je balkon mag zitten, EN dankzij nieuwe medicatie voor mijn hooikoorts kon ik zomaar onbekommerd in mijn tuin werken.....héérlijk :D.

De planten, die de vorige hete zomer hebben overleefd, werden ontdaan van oud blad en oude vergane stengels, maar hier en daar heb ik er nog iets van laten liggen, om als dekje te dienen tegen de nachtvorst, die nu ineens verscheen na praktisch een hele winter zónder nachtvorst :O. 

Last weekend it was very nice weather in the Netherlands, the sun was shining bright and the temperature was pleasant. Despite the measures (here in the Netherlands!) you can still go outside, but only in your own garden, or you can still sit on your balcony, AND thanks to new medication for my hay fever, I could just work carefree in my garden......I loved it :D.

The plants, which survived the previous (very hot) summer, were stripped of old leaves and old decayed stems, but here and there I left some of them to serve as a cover against the night frost, which suddenly appeared after practically a whole winter without frost :O.

Ik heb wat bij gesnoeid aan struiken, maar mijn zo genoemde ‘hemelse’ Bamboe ( https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nandina_domestica ) en mijn grote Wijfjesvaren (  https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wijfjesvaren ) mogen nog een poosje zo bedekt blijven staan. De bamboe vertoont, naast de oude rode bessen van vorig jaar, al zijn nieuwe scheuten.

Mijn insectenhotel heeft zijn eerste lente wondertjes al vrijgegeven: er komen vlinders uit gevlogen en er zijn al werkbijtjes actief, die ’s avonds weer naar hun ‘hotelkamer’ terugkeren ;).

I did some pruning on bushes, but my so-called ‘heavenly’ bamboo ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nandina ) and my large common lady-fern ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athyrium_filix-femina ) can stay covered this way for awhile. In addition to the old red berries from last year, the bamboo shows all its new shoots.

My insect hotel has already released its first wonders of spring: all sort of butterflies came flown out and little worker bees are already active, which safely return to their ‘hotel room’ in the evening ;).

Het mezenhuisje is inmiddels zwaar bevochten door rivaliserende echtparen Pimpelmees, maar nu rustig bewoond. Sinds een week wordt er druk op en neer gevlogen door een echtpaar Pimpelmezen, die inmiddels eitjes hebben.

The Blue Tit birdhouse has been hard fought for, by several rival Blue Tit couples, but is now quietly inhabited. Since a week there has been a lot of flying up and down by a couple of Blue tits, who now have their precious little eggs.

Ook werden mijn Agapanthus en olijfboompje, beiden overwinteraars in pot, naar buiten gereden om de lente te vieren.

My Agapanthus and olive tree, both hibernaters in pots, were also driven outside to celebrate spring.

Persoonlijk vind ik beide takjes met kersenbloesem in één sultan vaas mooier staan.

Personally I think that both twigs of cherry blossom in one vase is more beautiful.

De blaadjes hebben twee kleuren, wijnrood aan de onderkant en nu in de lente dus lichter groen op de bovenkant van de blaadjes.

The leaves have two colors, wine red at the bottom side and now in spring season lighter green on top of the leaves.

Vanwege mijn 1:1 tuinwerk heb ik dus aan “miniatuur tuinieren” niet zo veel kunnen doen. Mijn tweede, iets grotere, miniatuur takje van de kersenbloesem is inmiddels wel af, vandaag heb ik er wat foto’s van gemaakt. Ik heb een beetje met de takjes gespeeld, want dat is altijd het leukste als er iets af is, hè ;O)?? Dus hier wat foto’s van de beide takjes kersenbloesem in miniatuur, in verschillende vazen…

Because of my 1: 1 garden work, I have not been able to do much about “miniature gardening”. My second, slightly larger, miniature twig of the cherry blossom is now completed, today I took some pictures of it. I played a bit with both twigs, because that's always the most fun thing when something is finished, huh ;O) ?? So here some pictures of the two twigs of cherry blossom in miniature, in different vases ...
