I love playing with words, but sometimes it doesn’t work for a proper translation in a foreign language. The Dutch proverb ‘Een uiltje knappen’ does mean ( if literally translated into English:taking some little naps for a short time, just like an owl) the same like the English proverb 'to take forty winks', at least that's what Google say.... But unfortunately in the English version the word ‘owl’ is missing and that’s exactly where this blog post is about: a summer break and a miniature little owl.

The color of a blonde wheatfield against the blue summer sky, simply beautiful!!

Aardappelveld in volle bloei / A potato field in full bloom

Early this morning I went outdoors and made a last bike trip through the beautiful region, where I’m so lucky to live in. At the same time I’ve taken some pictures for this blog post, because I wanted to share with you the beauty of the landscaping. As always I’ve enjoyed it very much of being outdoors in the free nature :D!!

A ‘last’ ride because, due to my health, I have to stay indoors for the coming days, because of a heat wave we have here, in The Netherlands. Phew, who invents such a thing ;)?!

Okay, back to my little owl, which is nearly 2 cm high from top to toe. I’ve tried to sculpt a little owl of Fimo clay, it’s a first attempt. As you can see I’ve used very thin twisted wire for its paws.

After baking the yellow eyes were much less bright then before, such a pity, but you can still see them :D! I’ve painted this little owl with acrylic paint and a cocktail stick, phew, what a fiddling job!

Here he sits on a pole along the meadow, searching for prey…….

……there even are little owls, who love playing hide and seek ;O!

I’m also taking a summer break of blogging for getting new inspiration and new ideas. Now and than you’ll see me in the blog world, or when I have something new in miniature to share, or for leaving you a comment, if I've just got a bit of energy, okay?!
I wish you all a lovely and cheerful summer, see you :D!!

Ilona

Hello Ilona,
I adore your owl, he's wonderful!! I've always wanted to make an owl and you have inspired me :) I also have to stay indoors with the heat wave so maybe I can use the time to make an owl :)
Thank you for the beautiful photos of your landscape. You live in such a special place.
I hope you have a lovely summer break and that you get lots of ideas and inspiration. I will look forward to seeing more of your wonderful creations!! Hugs ♥ Vicky ♥

Such a sweet little owl, I can just emagine all the work that must have gone into making him! Funny about different expressions and how some are difficult to translate. In Norwegian we say: "å ta en høneblund" - directly translated it means: to take a hen-nap :). Thank you for your kind comments on my blog, wish you a lovely Summer. I have had to retreat indoors too now, 32 degrees is more than I can manage. Blessings, Pam in Norway

Coucou Ilona,

Hi Ilona, Your little owl is adorable! Great work, as always. I'm glad you're taking a nice summer break. The blog world slows down dramatically this time of year, and as you mentioned, it's a good time to get inspiration for future projects. Stay cool! xo Jennifer

What a beautiful little owl... how I admire you for achieving such a result with a first try! ;O) Hope there are many owls to follow as there are so many variations of them - in German we call some of those little owls "Kauz" which is also used as an expression for a strange, unusual man. Thanks for sharing the pictures of your area with us - you live in a beautiful part of the world. And now stay cool during the heatwave and enjoy your summer break - I'm already looking forward to see your next post!

Hugs
Birgit (who is already finding herself in complete darkness... covering all windows during the day is the only way to fight the heat under my roof... *sigh* Not my weather... for sure not...)

Hi Ilona! Your tiny Owl is Awesome!!! I love that you made his eyes look so real! I am sorry you will have to stay inside in the summer... but maybe there will be more time for minis? I hope you feel better and the heat doesn't wear you out! I guess Blogland is going to be very empty now.... but somehow I think I will still be telling my Tall Tales!

Susan@minicrochetmad zei

Oh Ilona, my heart goes out to you enduring a heatwave, I hate heat too,. Be careful of your health. Once again you amaze with your talent, the little owl is magnificent!

Hello Ilona! What a wise old owl you have made! A truly Magnificent work! :D I not only love the looks of him, but also the beauty of the surrounding countryside.
We are experiencing a massive heat wave here too and there is no escape. For me it is too hot to take a nap or even 40 winks.
Personally I don't care a "Hoot" for weather this hot, but then what can you do EXCEPT.... make MORE OWLS! :D

What a wonderful bird you've made and the hard work you've been doing on all your lovely creations certainly deserves a break!

Relax in the cool and enjoy the down time, I am sure your new owl friend likes the cool of the night as well!

See you later on :)

Groetjes Thea

Hello Illona!

As usual, your owl is wonderful. I especially loved the picture with the owl hiding under the bike seat...that was clever and gave me a chuckle.

You are so very fortunate to live where you live. The countryside around you is magnificent. This old "city" country boy really loved those photos.

I do hope to see you around of course, but hope you enjoy the blogging break, and are healthy and happy in between times!

Hello Ilona! What a lovely little owl! Oh, I love birds and I just have to try make some of my own. But I'm sure I cannot make them half so realistic looking as this one. Amazing. Hope the heat will be gone soon. We haven't had any warm days in July yet... Hugs Sanne
