Wie is het? /Who is it?

Vorige week verliet ik jullie met de vraag wie de mysterieuze gast was op de onderste foto van mijn vorige blogpost…….en hebben jullie er nog over nagedacht wie dat kleine mannetje kon zijn? Natuurlijk deden jullie dat niet, want jullie hebben wel wat beters te doen ;)!

Velen van jullie dachten dat het de Kerstman was, maar nee, hij was het niet en iemand dacht zelfs dat het Vader Tijd was. Dat was een goede gok, Maria, maar nou……nee, hij was het ook niet.

Ik zal het jullie nu vertellen: het is Klaas Vaak en voor mijn buitenlandse lezers: het is het zandmannetje :D!

Last week I left you with the question who the mystery guest was on the bottom picture of my previous blogpost…….and have you thought about who this little man could be? Of course you haven’t, because you have better things to do ;)!

Many of you suggested that it was Santa Claus, but no, it wasn’t him and someone even thought it was Father Time. That was a good guess, Maria, but well,…….no, it wasn’t him too.

Now I’ll tell you: it is Klaas Vaak (in Dutch) and for my foreign readers: it is the Sandman :D!

Ik kwam op het idee toen ik het kleine ezeltje Suzanne zag wat is gemaakt door Patricia. Ik had haar gevraagd om (naast mijn bestelling van boerderijdieren) een ezeltje te maken voor mij. Dus zij was het, die mij de inspiratie gaf voor het maken van dit kleine mannetje! 

Patricia heeft begin november de Philadelphia miniature show gedaan en inmiddels heeft ze een hele serie nieuwe dieren op haar blog gezet. Heb je ze nog niet gezien? Gauw gaan kijken, hoor ;)! www.woolytalesminiatures.blogspot.com

I got this idea after I saw the donkey Suzanne, it is made by Patricia. (Next to my order of farm animals) I asked her to make a little donkey for me. So she was it, who gave me my inspiration to make this small man! Patricia did the Philadelphia miniature show at the end of October and in the meanwhile she posted lots of new and beautiful animals on her blog. Haven’t you seen them yet? Heb je ooit gehoord van het boek “Het ABC van de slaap” van Wil Huygen en illustrator Rien Poortvliet? Nee? Wat jammer, want het gaat over Klaas Vaak, die ’s avonds slaapzand in onze ogen strooit, zodat we heerlijk slapen en mooie dromen hebben. Het boek staat vol humoristische verhaaltjes en  tekeningen en jaren geleden las ik dat boek voor aan mijn kleine kinderen voor het slapen gaan.

Have you ever heard of this book “The ABC of the sleep” written by Wil Huygen and the illustrator Rien Poortvliet? For my followers who live abroad I think they don't have heard of this book? That is such a pity, because the book tells all about the Sandman, who scatters sleep sands into our eyes every night, so that we can sleep nice and we have beautiful dreams. This book is full with humoristic stories and drawings and years ago I read it to my little kids, before they went to sleep.

Klaas Vaak, die in het echte leven maar 15 cm groot is, meet in miniatuur 7,8 cm (bijna 1:24 schaal pop).

Hij kan ook zijn hoofd, armen en benen bewegen.

The Sandman, who in RL measures only 15 cm tall, measures in miniature 7,8 cm tall (nearly a 1:24 scale doll). He also can move his head, arms and legs.

Hij draagt altijd een rood nachthemd en een rode puntmuts, waarvan de punt geknakt is door de snelheid, waarmee hij ’s avonds en ’s nachts door de lucht vliegt op zijn ezeltje Suzanne. Klaas Vaak leeft in een kasteel hoog in het Alpengebergte, naar men zegt wordt zijn kasteel (volgens het boek/verhaal) bewaakt door Vrouw Holle.

He is always wearing a red nightgown and a red pointy hat, whereof the point is snapped, caused by the speed with which he every evening and night is flying through the air on his donkey Suzanne.

The Sandman lives in a castle high in the Alpine mountains, reputedly (according to the book/story) his castle is guarded by Mother Hulda.

Klaas Vaak en Suzanne hebben een huishoudster, Roberta, die jullie inmiddels al hebben gezien.

De laatste van de vier inwoners is Petronius, een heel oud steenuiltje (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steenuil), hij kan het weer voorspellen en kent alle tijdsverschillen op de wereld uit zijn hoofd, dat is altijd handig voor Klaas Vaak ;)! Misschien dat ik ooit nog eens ga leren naaldvilten en hem ook namaak, dan zou het kwartet compleet zijn en dat is wel zo leuk :D!

Mr. Sandman and Suzanne have a housekeeper, Roberta, who you have already seen.

The last one of the four inhabitants is Petronius, a very old little owl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Owl ) he can predict the weather and he knows all the time differences around the world out of his head, that is always useful for the Sandman;)! Perhaps I ever will learn needle felting in order to make him too, then the quartet will be complete and that would be nice :D!

Omdat Klaas Vaak al honderden jaren slaapzand rondstrooit, moet hij in topconditie zijn. Elke dag doen hij en Suzanne fanatiek hun oefeningen….wat een leuk boek is het toch :D!

Because the Sandman scatters sands for more then hundred of years, he has to be in top condition. Every day he and Suzanne fanatically do their exercises …. it is such a fun book :D!

Natuurlijk moeten Klaas Vaak en Suzanne zelf ook slapen…….

The Sandman and Suzanne also need sleep, of course ……

....en dat doen ze ook samen, dat doe je gewoon na een samenzijn van een paar honderd jaar.

Donker en guur weer / Dark and inclement weather

Dus écht pannenkoekenweer, het vuur opstoken, beslag maken en bakken maar, hmmmm!

So it is pancakes weather, stoke the fire, make a batter and bake them, yummy!

Eigenlijk was ik van plan om vandaag over iets anders te posten, maar ik was te druk met allerlei afspraken en ik had daardoor niet veel tijd voor mijn miniatuurwerk.

Actually I had planned to do a blogpost about something else, but I was too busy with all kind of appointments in real life and therefore I didn’t have much time for my miniature work.

Met de komst van dit natte, donkere en gure herfstweer in ons land gaan we ook weer de gezelligheid en warmte binnen zoeken. Vandaag bakt Roberta de pannenkoeken voor ons, het is best handig om een vogel-elfje zoals zij in je huis te hebben. Maar als je berehonger hebt, vallen die kleine miniflensjes nogal tegen: je stopt ze zo in je holle kies. Alhoewel……..dat laat je wel uit je hoofd, want ze zijn keihard, omdat ze zijn gemaakt van papierklei ;)!

With the advent of wet, dark and cold autumn weather in our country, we like to stay inside for some cosiness and warmth. Today Roberta bakes the pancakes for us, it is quite convenient to have a birdie elf like her in your house. But if you're very hungry, then those little mini pancakes are rather disappointing: you put them right in your hollow tooth as we say in The Netherlands. Although ........ I think you won't do it: they are as hard as a stone, because they are made of paper clay ;)!

Voor het vuur heb ik een flakkerend lichtje van een kerstvuurtje gebruikt, wat ik heb gekocht bij het tuincentrum op de kerstafdeling. Ik heb het helemaal gesloopt, alleen de kleine lampjes met weerstandjes ervan bewaard en met stukjes balsahout bedekt in de vuurplaats ingebouwd.  

For the fire I used a flickering light of a Christmas fire place. I have bought it at the garden centre on the Christmas decorations section. I’ve completely demolished it, I only preserved the tiny light bulbs and the resistors and covered with pieces of balsa wood I built them in the fire place. 

De kaars op de schoorsteenmantel en alle potten en pannen zijn door mij gemaakt van Fimo klei. Het kruikje heb ik op de laatste beurs gekocht van Elisabeth Causeret.

The candle on the mantelpiece and all pots and pans are made by me from Fimo clay. I bought the water jug from Elisabeth Causeret on the last fair. 

De mattenklopper is gemaakt van bloemendraad, daarna heb ik het geverfd.

The carpet beater is made of floral wire, afterwards I painted it.

Naast een solide rustieke vuurplaats heb ik ook nog wat spulletjes gemaakt voor Roberta om het huishouden wat te vergemakkelijken voor haar. Zeg nou zelf, een elfje van honderden jaren uit mag best wat “comfort” in huis hebben, niet ;)?

Roberta maakt graag schoon, ze veegt, klopt de matten, doet de was en ze bakt de meest heerlijke flensjes. Ze doet alles met veel toewijding voor haar baas………van wie ik op de laatste foto een glimp laat zien. Zie hier, de geheime gast, wie zou dat zijn :D!? Het is niet wie je denkt dat het is!

In addition to a solid rustic fireplace I’ve made some things for Roberta in order to facilitate the tasks of the household for her. Say for yourself, an elf of hundreds of years old really can use some “comfort” in the house, couldn’t she ;)?

Roberta loves to clean the house, she wipes, beats the mats, does the laundry and she bakes the most delicious crepes. She does everything with a lot of devotion for her boss ......... of whom I'll show you a glimpse on the last picture. See here, the mystery guest, who will that be :D? It is not who you think it is!

Waarschijnlijk zouden jullie hard gelachen hebben om mij op mijn handen en knieën door het huis te zien kruipen om een geschikt plekje te vinden voor die laatste foto. Onze hobby laat ons ook de meest gekke dingen doen :D!

Probably you would have laughed out loud to see me crawling on my hands and knees in order to find a suitable spot for that last picture. Our hobby always let us do the most crazy things :D!

Zooo verlegen!! / Sooo shy!!

Na het genieten van alle mooie dingen op een vrij rustige poppenhuis- en miniaturenbeurs in Apeldoorn afgelopen weekend, was het gisteren flink onrustig hier! Na die zware storm, eerst in Engeland en daarna hier in Nederland, moet er nu opgeruimd worden. Gelukkig was het in mijn regio niet zo ernstig, als in het zuidwesten, westen en ook in het Waddengebied. Dáár hebben ze het flink te verduren gehad met veel schade als gevolg.

Vanmorgen ben ik zelf eens naar buiten gegaan en ik heb veel afgevallen blad en losse takken opgeveegd, die in de tuin en op de straat waren gevallen.

After enjoying all beautiful things on a rather quiet dollhouse and miniatures fair in Apeldoorn this weekend,  it was very restless here yesterday! After the heavy storm of yesterday, firstly in Great-Brittain and then here in The Netherlands, everything has to be cleaned up. Fortunately in my region it wasn't that bad, like it was in the Southwest, the West and the North, on the Wadden islands. There was a lot of damage in those parts of The Netherlands.

So this morning I went outside and I have wiped up lots of fallen leaves and the loose branches, that have fallen in our garden and on the street.

Maar ik was niet alleen buiten….! Op een mooi gekleurd herfstblad zag ik haar plotseling staan: Roberta!

But I wasn’t alone outside……..! Suddenly I saw her standing on a beautiful colored autumn leaf: Roberta!

Roberta is een heel verlegen vogel-elfje van een paar honderd jaar oud en ze is het hulpje in het huis van een heel oude man. Hij krijgt zijn eigen blogpost, dus als je wilt weten wie hij is……;)!

Roberta is a very shy birdie elf, she is a couple of hundred of years old and she is the help in the house of a very old man.  He gets his own blogpost, so if you want to know who he is……;)!

Ik heb haar mee naar binnen genomen om haar te kunnen fotograferen, maar ze is zooo verlegen dat ik daar echt hulp bij nodig had. Schepje natuurlijk, hij vond het heerlijk om haar over te halen het toch maar te doen! Hij kreeg het dus wel voor elkaar om haar eventjes voor de camera te laten staan.

I've taken her inside in order to photograph her, but she is sooo shy that I really needed some help. Schepje, of course, he liked it a lot to persuade her for trying to do so! So he did manage to let her stand for a short while for my camera.

Roberta is 6,8 cm hoog, net ietsje meer dan 1:24 schaal, gemaakt van Fimo klei en ze heeft beweegbare armen, benen en hoofdje. Het maken van haar kleertjes was best moeilijk, omdat ze zo klein is en elvenvleugeltjes op haar rug heeft. Haar vleugeltjes heb ik ook zelfgemaakt en daardoor moest ik een speciaal bloesje met naadjes op de rug voor haar maken ;)!

Roberta is just 6,8 cm tall, just a bit more than 1:24 scale, she is made of Fimo clay and she has posable arms, legs and head. The sewing of her tiny clothes was rather difficult, because she is so small and she has her elf wings on her spine. Her wings are also made by me and therefore I had to sew a special shirt with seams on her spine ;)!

Toen ze eenmaal in de gaten had wat ik van haar verlangde werkte ze volledig mee, ze wilde zelfs wel even laten zien hoe klein ze is, staand op het toetsenbord.

Once she knew what I wanted from her she fully collaborated with me, she even wanted to show how small she is standing on the keyboard of the computer.

Na al dat showen was het tijd om de rest van de blaadjes op te vegen en voor Roberta om aan haar andere werk te denken. Wat dat voor werk zal zijn…? Dat vertel ik misschien volgende keer wel :D!
