Uitbreiding van personeel / Expansion of staff

Omdat er extra hulp in de huishouding is aangenomen, moet er op de zolder van het grachtenhuis een slaapplaats bij worden gebouwd.

De luide klappen van een hamer zijn hoorbaar door het hele grachtenpand, mede daarom is de hele familie niet thuis. In tussen heeft de dienstmeid er hoofdpijn van gekregen en ze hoopt dat het timmerwerk snel klaar zal zijn.

There has to be built an extra place to sleep in the attic of the canal house, due an expansion of the staff.

Loud blows of a hammer are audible through the whole canal house, therefore the family is not at home. In the meanwhile the maid has got headache from the noise and she hopes the work of the carpenter will be done soon.

Voor de bouw van de bedstee ( http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedstede ) heb ik de latten van een oude houten jaloezie gebruikt. Ik heb deze gekocht in de kringloopwinkel, het is lichtgewicht hout en gemakkelijk te verwerken. Voor de palen van het raamwerk heb ik vurenhouten latjes gebruikt.

For the construction of the bedstee (for more information about this ‘bedstee’, you can see this Dutch link http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedstede unfortunately I can’t find an English link). I've used old wooden venetian blind slats. I've bought it in the thrift store, this wood is very light in weight and easy to handle. For the framework I've used pine slats as poles.

Voor het maken van scharnieren heb ik een dunne metalen strip gebruikt, ik heb het om een koper spijkertje gebogen en in een kleine uitsparing in het hout geplakt met wat secondelijm.

For making the hinges I used a thin piece of metal strip, I've bent it around a copper nail and I've glued this hinge into a small hole in the wood work with a drop of superglue.

De hele bedstee is getimmerd met 'echte' spijkers. Voor dit effect heb ik gaatjes in het hout gemaakt met een naald en die gaatjes ingekleurd met een fijne donkergekleurde stift.

The whole 'bedstee' is nailed with 'real' nails. For this effect I made ​​holes with a needle in the used wood and I have colored these small holes with a very fine, dark-colored marker.

Om het toekomstige hulpje in de huishouding ruimte te geven voor haar dienstkleding en om wat kleine persoonlijke dingen op te kunnen ruimen, is de bedstee aan een kant uitgebreid met een kast.

On one side the 'bedstee'is extended with a cabinet to give the aid in the household some space for her future uniforms and where she also can store some small personal items.

tiny turnings

Voor de kastdeur heb ik van een ‘tiny turning’ een oude deurknop gemaakt. De kastdeur kan op die manier echt gesloten en geopend worden. Er zal geen sleutelgat in de deur komen, dus de vrouw des huizes kan op elk tijdstip de kast van haar personeel controleren……

For the door of the cabinet I made of a 'tiny turnings' an old door knob. Now the door of the cabinet can really be closed and opened. There will be no keyhole in the door, so the lady of the house may control the cabinet of her maid at any time.......

Ik weet nog niet of ik de bedstee zal schilderen in een antiek kleurtje, of dat ik het hout zo blank laat? Wat vinden jullie ervan?

Zij vindt deze kleuren ‘t mooist / She likes these colors most

Zo, het ergste leed is geleden: de hoest is bijna weg :D!! Hè, hè, ik dacht dat ik er nooit van af zou komen. Inmiddels ben ik begonnen met iets wat niet zo snel wegwaaide ;), de vloer in de provisiekamer/kelder van mijn grachtenhuis.

Nadat de bouw van mijn grachtenhuis én het maken van het interieur 14 jaar heeft stilgelegen, wordt het nu echt eens tijd om weer wat aan het huis te gaan doen.

Thus, the worst suffering is over, the cough is almost gone: D! Oh my, I thought I would never get rid of this cough. Meanwhile, I started with something that wouldn't blow away so quickly ;), it is the floor in the pantry / cellar of my canal house.

After the build of my canal house and the making of the interior is halted since 14 years ago, it is really time to do something again with the house now.

Ik heb zelf geprobeerd om op het internet te zoeken naar plavuizen, die in de 17^e eeuwse grachtenhuizen op de vloeren lagen, maar over de werkruimtes van die tijd is bijna geen informatie te vinden. Totdat ik ineens dacht aan het boekje dat ik in 1994 gekregen heb voor mijn verjaardag:

On the internet I searched for glazed tiles, which were on the floors in the 17th century canal houses, but as usual there is not much information to be found about the workrooms of that time. Until I suddenly thought of the booklet I got as a birthday gift back in 1994:

Ik kreeg dit boekje van mijn ouders, die in die tijd het Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam hadden bezocht en daar de antieke poppenkabinetten uit de 17^e eeuw hadden gezien.

Ik was toen net een paar jaar bezig met mijn miniaturen hobby en wilde graag een eigen grachtenhuis bouwen. Het grachtenhuis kwam er in het jaar 2000, daarna lag de bouw door allerlei omstandigheden stil.

I've got this booklet from my parents, who had visited the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam in that time and they had seen the antique dollshouse/cabinets from the 17th century.

A few years before then I was just started the miniatures hobby  and I wanted to build a canal house myself. The canal house was built in the year 2000 by me, but because of all kind of circumstances the build halted.

Vorige week heb ik bij de bouwmarkt een houten kijkkamer op maat laten zagen, daarvan heb ik de wanden met gesso bewerkt. Deze wanden werden vroeger wit gesausd en dat heb ik geprobeerd na te bootsen. Dus niet mooi strak gewit, maar met vlekken en zo.

Last week at the hardware store I asked them for custom sawing a wooden roombox, of which I painted the walls with gesso. In earlier times these walls were whitewashed and I have tried to copy this with gesso. So, definately not beautiful regular white, but with stains and so on.

Heb je ooit wanden geschilderd met een Lotto-kaart? Nee? Nou, ze maken mooie aangestreken witgekalkte muren ;).

Did you ever painted walls with a lottery-card? No? Well, they make nicely rubbed whitewashed walls ;).

Terug naar de provisiekamer van het boekje, op defoto kun je zien dat er mosterdgele en mosgroene plavuizen op de grond liggen. Omdat het haar werkterrein is, mocht mijn dienstmeisje de kleuren uitkiezen ;). Mijn dienstmeisje vond deze kleuren ook mooi, dus ben ik begonnen met het maken van de plavuizen.

Back to the pantry from the booklet, on the picture you can see that there are mustard yellow and moss green tiles on the floor. Because it is her work place, my maid was allowed to choose the colors of the floor tiles ;). My maid also liked these colors, so I started with the making of the floor tiles.

In de boekhandel heb ik twee vellen gekleurd papier gekocht, het wordt gebruikt om thuis zelf kaarten te kunnen printen. Daarop heb ik lijnen getrokken, 15 mm uit elkaar en daarna in stroken gesneden, zodat ze niet zo gemakkelijk weg waaiden ;).

At the bookstore I bought two sheets of colored paper, which are used to print your own cards at home. On the sheets I have drawn lines, 15 mm from each other and after that I cut them up in strips, so that they couldn’t easily blow away ;).

Ik heb die strips papier bewerkt met verf. Ik houd van knoeien met verf en zo ;).

I have edited these strips of paper with paint. I like messing up things ;).

Hierna heb ik de tegeltjes gesneden, nu nog aflakken.

After that I cut the tiles, I still have to varnish them.

Maar nu heb ik een vraag aan jullie: hoe kun je deze tegeltjes voegen zonder dat de papieren tegels vies worden en beschadigd raken? Weet iemand dat?

But here is a question to you: how can I add these tiles with grout without dirtying or damaging the paper tiles? Does someone know this?

Hallo allemaal! / Hello everyone!

Vanwege de vakantie en real life ben ik een paar weken weggeweest uit de blogwereld. Intussen ben ik ook weer eens mijn werkkamer ingedoken voor een grote schoonmaak. Nadat de grootste “ravage” weg was, kwam daar zowaar……..mijn grachtenhuis tevoorschijn. Het was er dus nog steeds :D !

Due the summer holiday and real life I have been away from the blogworld since a few weeks. In the meantime I also dived into my workroom for a large cleaning. After the greatest “havoc” was gone, there really was appearing…….my canal house. So it still was there :D!

Het grachtenhuis is al 12 jaar oud, maar eigenlijk kan niemand het zien. Ik heb het huis namelijk achter een gordijn staan, zodat ik op die manier het stof er van weg kan houden.

Ik heb dit huis nagebouwd uit een boekje wat ik destijds van de bibliotheek heb geleend. In werkelijkheid ziet dit huis er heel anders uit, want ik wilde het niet exact nabouwen. Eigenlijk had ik meer een kast nodig om mijn miniaturen in te zetten, dan een grachtenhuis. Dus heb ik de afmetingen van dit huis aangepast naar die van een kast in de vorm van een grachtenpand.

Het plan was (en is nog steeds) om er kamers in te zetten, die van te voren worden ingericht, zodat ik nog steeds bij de verlichting kan komen en die draden niet aan de achterkant uit het huis komen te hangen.

Door allerlei oorzaken bleven de bouw van het huis en de miniaturen jarenlang stilliggen, voordat ik, zoals jullie waarschijnlijk wel weten, in 2011 weer met deze hobby verder kon gaan.

The canal house is already 12 years old, but actually no one can see it. I namely put the house behind a curtain, on that way I can keep the dust away from it.

I have recreated this house from a book, which I've borrowed at that time from the library. In reality this house looks very different, because I didn't want to copy it exactly. Actually I needed a sort of a cabinet, instead of a house, for storing my selfmade miniatures. So I had changed the dimensions of the house into those of this cabinet, which has the shape of a canalhouse.

The plan was (and still is) to put rooms in it, which are furnished in advance, so that I can still have access to the lighting and that these wires don't hang out of the backside of the house.

For various reasons the build of the house and its miniatures came to a halt for several years ago, as you probably all know, I could continue with this hobby in 2011.

Het grachtenhuis is volledig uit elkaar te halen en weer in elkaar te zetten. Het staat “los” op een verrijdbare onderkast, dat is handig voor het transport van het zware grachtenhuis.  In die onderkast is nog meer bergruimte en waarvoor eventueel nog deurtjes kunnen worden gemaakt.

The canal house can be fully taken apart and put back together.The house stands "loose" on a mobile under cabinet, which is handy for the transport of the heavy canal house/cabinet. In this under cabinet is even more storage space and for which one possibly can make doors.

De zijgevels van het grachtenhuis zijn de voor- en achterkant van de “miniaturenkast”. Hierin zitten grote deuren, die het huis toegankelijk maken. De zijkanten van de kast zijn de voor- en achtergevel van het grachtenhuis. Hiervan heb ik alleen oude, wat wazige foto’s, want ik kan nu geen nieuwe foto’s maken vanwege te weinig ruimte in mijn werkkamer.

The side walls of the canal house are actually the front- and the back gable of the “miniatures cabinet”. Here in are the big doors, which make the house accessible. De buitenkant van het grachtenhuis heeft alle ramen en deuren al. Ik heb ze uit hun openingen gehaald en opgeborgen, zodat ze niet beschadigd kunnen worden door de bouw van de kamers. De binnenkant moet nog gebouwd worden, intussen verzamel ik miniaturen, die ik niet zelf kan maken.

The outside of the canal house has already all its doors and windows. I took them out of the openings, so that they can’t be damaged by the build of the rooms. The inside is yet to be build, in the meantime I collect miniatures, which I can’t make myself.

Het dak heeft een pianoscharnier, waardoor het open kan en open kan blijven staan.

The roof has a piano hinge, whereby it can be opened and can stay open.

Een paar weken geleden vond ik deze camee bij de plaatselijke drogist, ik dacht dat het mooi zou staan in een van de kamers voor mijn grachtenhuis.

A few weeks ago I found this cameo in the local drugstore, I thought it would fit lovely in one of the rooms of my canal house.
