The beautiful redbreast was accompanied of a box filled with

Sprekend over kadootjes, ik had het plan opgevat om voor de
feestdagen een aantal boerderijdieren te kopen voor mijn kleinzoon en ben op
internet daarnaar gaan zoeken. Zo kon het gebeuren dat ik onverwachts een paar
mooie koeien heb gevonden, die bij nader onderzoek zelfs de maten hadden van
een koe in schaal 1:12, WAUW, wat een goeie vondst!!!!
Althans dàt dacht ik, want toen die koeien hier thuis
arriveerden, bleken ze veel kleiner te zijn dan de aangegeven maten L. Maar…..bij nader inzien
herinnerde ik me ineens iets waar ik totaal nog niet aan gedacht had ;)!!!
Speaking of presents, I planned to buy some farm animals for
my grandson, as gifts for the holidays, and I was searching on the internet for
them. So this way it happened that I unexpectedly found a few beautiful cows,
which on closer examination even had the sizes of a 1:12 scale cow, WOW, what a
lucky find!!!!
At least that's what I thought, because when those cows
arrived here, they turned out to be much smaller than the indicated sizes :(.
But…..on closer inspection I suddenly remembered something that I had not
thought of at all ;)!!!
Ineens besefte ik mij iets wat nu van belang kon zijn: mijn
grootouders hadden een paar roodbonte koeien, maar wonend aan de oever van
de IJssel…….hadden zij dus geen roodbonte Friese koeien, maar roodbonte “Maas
Rijn en IJssel”-koeien. Dat houdt in dat deze soort koeien kleiner waren
dan hun roodbonte Friese soortgenoten (je kunt het zien aan de lichaamslengte
van mijn grootouders, die ongeveer 1.65 - 1.70 m waren en de hoogte van hun
koeien ongeveer 1.30 mtr). Kwam dat even mooi uit, want alhoewel de
speelgoedkoeien nog steeds iets te klein zijn nu, kan ik ze nu voor koeien van
het “MRIJ”-ras door laten gaan, maar dan wel als vaarzen, een jonge eenjarige
koe, die nog niet helemaal volwassen is. Tadaaaa, dus toch nog een beetje geluk
bij deze miskoop ;).

Suddenly I realized something that could be important now:
my grandparents had a few red-and-white cows, but living on the bank of the
river IJssel themselves ……. So they didn't keep red-and-white Frisian cows, but
red-and-white “Maas Rijn en IJssel”-cows. This means that these cows were somewhat smaller than their red-and-white Frisian counterparts (you can see it
at the body length of my grandparents, who were about 1.60-1.65 mtrs and the
height of their cows about 1.35 mtr). That was nice, because although the toy
cows are still just a bit too small now, I can now let them be as cows of the
“MRIJ” breed, but then as heifers, a young female before she has had a calf of
her own and is under three years of age is called a heifer. Tadaaaa, so still a
bit of luck with this bad bargain ;).

De twee koeien van Patricia hebben een behoorlijk
kleurverschil en eigenlijk kleuren ze niet zo goed bij het roodbonte vee van
mijn grootouders. Maar om deze koeien te veranderen van kleur, wilde ik dat
eerst eens uitproberen op een plastic exemplaar. Dus krijgt mijn kleinzoon een
koe minder (en dat weet hij helemaal niet, dus zal hij er ook geen missen,
hihihi, ben ik nu een slechte oma ;O)!?

Patricia's two cows have a considerable difference in color
and actually they don't color very well with my grandparents' red-and-white
cattle. But before I will change the color of these cows, I first wanted to try
it out on a plastic one. So my grandson gets one cow less (and he doesn't know
that at all, so he probably won't miss one either, hihihi, am I not a bad
grandmom now ;O)!?
Oké, de basis, dus de koe had ik nu, maar hoe nu verder?
Waarmee ga ik die koe een andere kleur geven? Ik ben in mijn voorraaddozen
gedoken en vond nog twee kleine stukken wol, die de juiste roodbruine kleur
had. Het was amper 2 meter maar ik heb het (uren lang!) in stukje van 1-2 mm
lang zitten knippen. Pfff, wat een priegelwerk was dat. Daarnaast heb ik ook
nog 2 stukken wol gevonden in een mooie roomwitte kleur, die hoofdzakelijk op
de poten en bles komen van de koe en ook dat in minuscule stukjes geknipt.
Okay, the basis, so the cow, I had now, but what next? What
am I going to use to give that cow a different color and a more fur look? I dug
into my storage boxes and found two small pieces of wool, which were of the
correct reddish brown color. It was barely 2 meters but armed with a fine pair
of scissors, I cut it (for hours!) into pieces of 1-2 mm long. Phew, what a
meticulous job. In addition, I also found 2 pieces of wool in a beautiful
creamy white color, which mainly come on the legs and blaze of the cow and I
also had to cut that into miniscule pieces.
Om deze techniek van ‘flocken’ te oefenen, heb ik een kalfje
(Schleich) gepakt en gekeken wat er zoal mogelijk zou zijn. Eerst heb ik het
lijfje beschilderd met acrylverf op de gekleurde vlakken en witte gesso op de
witte gedeelten, daarna heb ik het lijfje (deel voor deel) met Tacky Glue
ingesmeerd en het ‘geflockt’ met de gemillimeterde wol. Hierna zat werkelijk
alles in de omgeving van het werk onder de woldeeltjes, de enige oplossing om
die deeltjes overal af te halen was de stofzuiger erop zetten, inclusief het
kalfje :O!!
To practice this technique of "flocking", I
took a calf (Schleich) and looked at what would be possible. First I painted
the body with acrylic paint on the colored areas and white gesso on the white
areas, then I smeared (in parts at a time) with Tacky Glue on the body parts
and "flocked" it with the milled wool. After this, everything in the
vicinity of my worktable was covered with teeny tiny wool particles, the only
solution to remove those particles from everywhere was to put the vacuum
cleaner on it, incluiding the calf :O!!
Van Fimoklei heb ik alvast wat hoorns gebakken, want de
koeien hadden toentertijd nog hoorns, die gebruikt werden om een koe te kunnen
hanteren, of vast te zetten bij het melken in de weide (in de zomer).
Tegenwoordig zijn er steeds meer boeren die de hoorns weer laten groeien…
I have already baked some horns from Fimo clay, because the
cows in the 50s still had their horns, which were used to handle a cow, or to
secure her during milking in the meadow (in summer). Nowadays there are more
and more farmers who let the horns grow again...
Ik ben tevreden over het resultaat, op naar de koeien, ja,
alle drie!
Het virus is aan het accelereren hier in Nederland, en er
komen strengere maatregelen aan. Wij waren toch al niet van plan elkaar op te
zoeken met de Kerstdagen, vanwege mijn gezondheid en zelfisolatie, dus gaan we
weer online, en dat is ook heel fijn dat dat tegenwoordig kan in deze moeilijke tijd, is het niet ;)?!

I am satisfied with the result, next are the cows, yes, all
three!
The virus contaminations now are quickly accelerating here,
in the Netherlands, and stricter measures are on the way. We weren't planning
to visit each other for Christmas anyway, because of my fragile health and
self-isolation, so we're celebrating online again, and it's great that we can
do this nowadays in this troubled time, isn't it ;)?
