Mijn ouders hadden een echte (1:1) Friese staartklok in hun
huiskamer hangen, zo eentje die elk heel uur sloeg met een helder, tingelend geluid.

In the living room of my parents hung a Friesian tail-end
clock, who struck every hour with a clear, tinkling noise. For more

Halfway the 90s I found the building plan of this miniature Frisian tail-end clock in a Dutch magazine Poppenhuizen & Miniaturen (P&M no. 5 Fall 1991). It was then that I decided to try making this clock in miniature. That was quite a job, because at that time I didn't own any machinery, such as mini saw and mini drilling machines etc.

Op veel Friese staartklokken staan boven op de klokkast 3 ornamenten.
De meeste van deze klokken hebben een Atlasfiguur, die de sterrenhemel draagt, geflankeerd door twee keer de Faam. De Faam, of Fama, is een gevleugeld vrouwenfiguur met bazuin uit de mythologie.
On top of many of these Friesian tail-end clock were standing 3 ornaments.
Most of these tail-end clocks have an Atlas figure, carrying a globe and two Pheme Goddess at the sides. These are mythological female figures with a trumpet in their hands.
De 3 figuurtjes stonden niet op de originele bouwtekening afgebeeld, maar werden weergegeven met houten kralen. En (zoals altijd

ben ik mijn eigen gang gegaan en heb ik de uitvoering van deze klok hier en
daar wat aangepast/veranderd. Dus werden er 3 figuurtjes geboetseerd met Fimoklei en kwamen die op de klokkast te staan.
The 3 figures were not shown in the original building plan, actually they were displayed with wooden beads. And (as usual 😉) I did my own thing and adjusted, or changed, the execution of this clock here and there to my liking. So, I sculpted 3 figures out of Fimo clay and they were placed on top of the clock.
De klok heeft een echt werkend uurwerkje op batterij, dat heb ik in de jaren '90 gekocht bij een winkel voor miniaturen, die niet meer bestaat.
Het batterijtje moet nog vernieuwd worden bij de juwelier.
The clock has a real working timepiece (operating on a small battery), which I bought in the 90s at a store for miniatures, that no longer exists.
The battery still needs to be renewed at the jewelry store.
Ik was op zoek naar iets anders, toen ik de klok per ongeluk
tegenkwam in een opslagdoos en zag ik dat de figuurtjes, gemaakt van Fimoklei,
in de loop van de jaren behoorlijk beschadigd waren. Ik ben vergeten foto’s te maken
voor de restauratie, want ik had niet gedacht dat ’t me zou lukken.
Met wat secondelijm en bronskleurige verf heb ik ze
geprobeerd te “restaureren”, hetgeen redelijk gelukt is.
I was looking for something else, when I accidentically came
across the clock in a store box and I saw that the figurines, made out of Fimo
clay, were quite damaged after so many years. I forgot to take pictures before
the renovation, because I didn’t know I would succeed.
With the help of superglue and bronze colored paint I’ve
tried to “restore” them, which was reasonably successful.
Terwijl ik hiermee bezig was, herinnerde ik mij dat
mijn grootvader vroeger, tijdens de lange winteravonden op de
boerderij, allerlei soorten klokken repareerde. Ik weet niet of hij daarmee succesvol was, maar
het was voor mij een extra reden om deze Friese staartklok te repareren en als
de boerderij een woonkamer ooit heeft gekregen, om de klok dan daarin op te
hangen.
While I was busy with renovating the clock, I remembered
that my grandpa in earlier times restored all types of clocks, during the long winter evenings at the
farm. I don’t know if he was succesful with his labour, but
for me it was an extra reason to repair this clock and, when the mini farm has
ever got his livingroom, to hang this clock in this room.
Op dit moment trekt storm Dennis hier over, ik hoop dat
iedereen veilig zal zijn. Want deze storm was aangekondigd als niet zo zwaar,
als Ciara van vorig weekend. Dat is echter niet zo: het stormt hier nu heel
hard met zeer zware windstoten!

At this very moment storm Dennis is visiting us here, I hope
everyone will be safe. Because this storm was annouced as being not so heavy as
Ciara of last weekend. But they're wrong: it is storming heavy, accompanied by
strong gusts of wind!
