It’s commonly known that we, Dutch people, are true lovers of skating and now the winter weather seems to get more serious, lots of people are preparing their skates just in case. I don't, no, I've been busy replenishing the coal supply, so that it indoors will be warm anyway, if it starts to freeze harder....
So, on the mini farm there has been the coal man and he has emptied two big jute coal bags full with coal in the coal shed.

With a coal scoop grandpa is filling the coal scuttle for my mini grandma, so she can heat the stove extra well.

But there’s still someone, who is looking for pieces of coal: Schepje! He has also heard that we possibly will get some snow in our part of The Netherlands and he thought let’s be prepared: he was in need of a few pices of coal, just in case it was possible to make a snowman….well, we’ll see how much snow we will get, but Birgit, know that we'll think of you ;)!

Hoppa, for getting the smaller pieces of coal he had to jump into the coal shed, and uh, don’t worry: his white furcoat will not get dirty, he is a magical BiWuBaerie, who can’t get dirty and they can jump….even by the lack of legs ;O.

We had the big honor for receiving a true Kaffeeklatsch mug from Birgit :D!!

Speaking about jumping: BiWuBearies can jump very well, for example into Kaffeeklatsch mugs, see for yourself on the blog of Birgit, the bearmaker of my Schepje: https://biwubaer.blogspot.com/
This brings me again to showing the Christmas gifts, which I received from Birgit with Christmas. Due personal reasons I wasn’t able to show them yet on my blog, but look here how much my blog friend spoiled me…

…a wonderful cooking pan for my mini grandma and a goregous ceramic bowl, which is surrounded by ceramic cabbage leaves, made by Sally Meekins. AND a gorgeous mini gem: a kingfisher, sewed by hand by Shirley Scheibehenne, unbelievable, so tiny and its wings are movable too :O!!
Dearest Birgit, many, many thanks from the bottom of my heart, I’m so very happy with all of these mini treasures!

Last week the postman brought me an envelope, which came from Spain! A few weeks ago the grandson of Carmen (blog: http://pekevasion.blogspot.com/2018/12/que-la-luz-les-acompane.html ) Martin did the draw of her giveaway, and my name was on the piece of paper. Look what arrived this past week: here are the lovely kitchen treasures, which Carmen has made for her giveaway:

Carmen, muchas gracis, for sending me so many of your kitchen utensils J!

The day after the postman came to my frontdoor again with a package: from my friend Birgit. Huh, again, probably a mistake??
But no, the sweety kept in mind that yesterday it was my birthday and probably she thought that I wasn’t already spoiled enough by her, oh dear…I’m getting shy about this.

In the box was a beautiful card, handmade by Birgit, with beautiful roses from her garden (and Fluby on top, but I shouldn’t tell this, just in case he is getting too vain ;O), a marzipan pig, yummy, delicious and two very thoughtful gifts: light! The first one was this adorable drawer, which shows a wonderful panorama of trees with a squirrel and birds, at the rear side is a switch for letting shine soft light through it. It’s made so delicate, beautiful for someone who loves nature so much as I do, thank you, dearie!

De blauwe lamp was de oude / The blue bulb was the old one

The other gift of light was very thoughtful of Birgit, judge for yourself:
Last summer was for me in person a horrible summer: very hot and seriousle dry, very bad for someone who is suffering for hayfever and lots of other allergic, as I do. The result was that I was forced to stay indoors in a dark house for months and I wasn’t able to make almost no miniatures due the lack of daylight.
I namely need daylight for judging the colors I need for making my miniature plants and flowers. I already have a daylight lamp in my workroom, but it is an oldie with a weak shine of light, 40 watt is not enough. Despite Birgit didn’t know this, she probably did think about this over and now she sent me a new daylight (energy saving!)lamp bulb. I’ve immediatly turned the bulb into the lamp in my workroom and switched it on, oh my: this was not daylight…..it looked like there was a lighthouse in my room, in comparison with the old lamp: dearest Birgit, you are such a sweetheart, you made me so very very happy with these thoughtful gifts, thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!
If you are still with me after such an uncommon long blog post, I thank you for reading it ;O!
Thank you for kind comments, have a nice Sunday evening and week ahead!

Het kolenhok / The coal shed

As promised I show you now, with the help of pictures, the build of my coal shed from the 50s. I still had a piece of MDF (8 mm thick), whereon was already a layer of white basic paint, which comes in handy when you have to paint the shed with chalkpaint ;)!

For creating a lid I’ve used a lid from a wooden cigar box, because the hinges were already on the right position. For getting the right angle I’ve bent with a pliers the hinges a bit more.

As you probably will know consist MDF of layers from wood fibres, ofwhich I scraped some excess off for getting a more rough innerside.

The painting process is done by irregular! sponging with chalkpaint, which has been applied frugal, using a cheap make up sponge. You have to work very quick if you, just like I did, do work with chalkpaint, because this stuff dries very quickly. You firstly sponge a thin layer of orange chalkpaint, than immediately (brick)red, immediatley followed by brown, work wet in wet. And because it had to become a coal shed, I’ve used on some spots, where needed, an antrhacite color of the chalkpaint. A coal shed is a object for daily use in winter and it looks very smudgy by the coal dust.

For the lid I’ve used an anthracite and an orange color because of the rust formation, which comes from the rusty hinges at the upper side.

For scratching the pattern of bricks I used a tool, which I got from my dentist during a visit. You can also use a tiny fine screwdriver for this job. Don’t scratch too deep en do it very irregular, so you’ll get a ‘impression of bricks’ and not only neat lines on a row ;). The size of a brick (in The Netherlands) is mostly 20x10x5 cm, so in miniature 16x8x4 mm.

I can recall that our coal shed at home, was edited with cement on the slanted sides and also at the upperside at the front. This was done to finish the slanted masonry and also because the heavy bags of coal were put down on the upper frontside before they were emptied.
I copied this edges in miniature by using a medium, that is used for creating a grainy surface for working with pastel chalks. After than I sponged the edges with mixed colors of chalkpaint for imitating the cement.

After I painted the lid I thought it didn’t look much like the one I could remember from my childhood. But during one night of bad sleep I recalled again that there was nailed a sort of bendable stuff on the wooden lid, in order to protect the coal, in order for not getting wet of course. I don’t know how it is named in English (mastic?).
For copying this coarse material I used very fine sanding paper (400) and I than painted it with an antracite color of chalkpaint on a natural looking way.

First I had to play a bit with some miniature coals, in order to see if I had enough of them, yes, they were: winter can come ;O!

After adding some lichen and spots of rust and of course bird poo I think my coal shed was ready! The coal scoop was bought from Mr. Eijcking (he only sells on fairs/shows, no website).
Thank you for your comments, have a nice week ahead!

Jute zakken maken / Making jute bags

As you may recall I stopped making miniatures at the half of December, I now restarted my work in these past days. I was busy inventing a way for making jute bags. I surely will need quite some jute bags for in my miniature farm, which were used for many different purposes in the 50s.

I showed you here on my blog a cooking pan with content and I asked you what I was ‘brewing’, do you remember? Some of you guessed right, I was busy with coloring patches of cotton and linen, for getting a jute ‘look’ by using natural pigments/dyes.

I’ve used the next things: pine cones, smashed shells of walnuts and hazelnuts, a coffee filter with freshly ground coffee and a fresh tea sachet. In between, I’ve put cut-to-size pieces of fabric, put the lid on the pan, cooked it for an hour, then let it cool down.
It seemed to work out well, but then I made the mistake of rinsing out the pieces of fabric, whereby a lot of dye was lost, so I had to restart the process.

(color differs because of the use of artificial light, in reality it looks more soft ocher)

Before I did my second attempt I’ve searched on the internet for natural pigments/dyes and I've read about a tip for using the partitions between the halves of the walnuts (see picture and yellow arrows). So, for this attempt I’ve used the same ingredients PLUS the partitions, where to I also added, next to the (already colored) white cotton and linen pieces, a piece of beige cheesecloth. Especially this last piece took up the pigment/dye quite well, but next to this I took a cheap ochre colored felting pen and used the inner part for putting more color to the fabric here and there. Of course I learned my lesson and I didn’t rinse again the fabric after cooking, now I’m satisfied with the result.

Using cotton sewing thread I sewed some bags with very tiny and irregular stitches (hello, these are bags ;O) and of course, I left a few very tiny holes/cracks here and there.

But while scooping in some coals into the bag already, for making photos, I thought the coal bag was still (in this case) much too clean. I know from former days that if the coalman came to our house, that these men had black faces, hands and clothing from all the coal dust, which fell out the loosely woven bags. So I took a piece of black soft pastel and edited the jute bag, but after gently beating out, lots of the pastel came loose from the fabric…what to do now? I had to look for a way of fixation, I found out that hairspray could do the job. I’ve sprayed several layers on the fabric, let dry very well in between every layer.

Now I had the bewished result, so hoppa, I've scooped coals into the bag, wood chopped with the hand ax (bought years ago on a show from Miniatur Puppenwelt Wengen) and lighted the stove (made by the Dutch miniaturist Mr. Eijking, he only sells at miniature shows) for preparing a delicious pot with potatoes, kale and smoked sausage for dinner ;).

After making the jute bag with coals I got the idea for making a small coal shed for my mini farm, because it certainly must have been there in the 50s. In my next blog I’ll show you how I did this, till later!
Thank you for your kind comments, wishing everyone a nice week ahead!
