Bijna klaar… / Almost done…

The old mini-bible, which was lying for more than 20 years in my antique linen cupboard, was absolutely not a 'beauty' to see. So, firstly I started making a new ‘old’ bible.
During the restoration of the RL bible of my grandparents (more than 25 years ago) some pieces of paper fell out from this bible, but also a tiny piece of a peacock feather. At the time I had no idea why that piece of feather was in their bible, but after a search on the internet I found out that a peacock feather was used as a bookmark in the bible. It seems that the eye of the peacock feather was a symbolic sign of God's watchful eye. So I decided that there should also be such a peacock feather in the mini bible ;).

First I’ve made a book cover, out of thin cardboard and I’ve cut to size a piece of very thin wonderful 'leather' (bought on a miniatures fair, they told me it's made from eel skin). The inside of the book cover is covered with beige paper, whereafter I gave the edges an ‘old' look, using scrapbook distress ink.
Than I've cut out a long strip of paper, for making pages for the book, I've folded it as an accordion. Than I’ve 'written' blocks of text on the pages in the middle, it's made by pulling tiny stripes with  a very thin propelling pencil and with the help of a ruler.
At the outside of the book block I gave the pages an ‘old/worn out’ look, by using just a little bit of distress ink.

Once the book block was glued into the book cover, I thought the leather looked too shiny, too new, after my taste. Using an old, tiny piece of very fine sanding paper I sanded it, until it looked more matte.
After that was done I cut loose the rest of the pages, using a scalpel knife. Here and there I made some curly edges at the pages.

Eerste poging / First attempt

Then the peacock feater was on turn: it was not easy to do!
The base is a RL piece of peacock feather, from a tail feather, which I’ve ever found. For the more thinner protrusions at the sides I've used a thin synthetic ribbon, frayed out. Something I did regret afterwards, but more about this later on.

After cutting the ribbon and the feather in shape, read: shorten, most of the beautiful mother of pearl colors were way less to see. For making ‘God’s watchful eye’ on that tiny piece of feather, I used iridescent ink of the brand Smooch. I had this stuff already for years, once bought at a hobby shop, for using it whenever it would be. That never happened until so far and I had to thoroughly look for it in my drawers, and it already seemed to be quite dryed up, but I still could use a bit :D!
However, my joy was lasting just for a short while: the ink didn’t stick well on the surface L……until I got an idea: what if I would use a heat tool for the wanted effect? So: I cleaned up the tiny feather and I started again with the ink, and after drying very well I used the heat tool, whereby the synthetic ribbon shrank immediately until nothing was left, oh oh, I should have known that ;O!!
This time I really had to start all over again. So, when I had to use the heat tool again, I was much more careful and now (the feather!) and the ink stayed quite well, although it’s NOT very wipe-resistant! But the feather will go into the mini bible and I guess that it will go into the linen cupboard for years, so…….no one who will probably ever see it again ;O.

Finally (literally and figuratively) a lock was made on it. For this I used an ornament from Bindels Ornaments (see their website) and this is how the mini-bible with peacock feather, as a bookmark, looks like now!

Oude miniaturen vóór bewerking/vervanging
Old miniatures, before editing/replacement

The old wedding pipe (selfmade of Fimo clay and a painted piece of fine wire) has been updated a little here and there and got a new silk ribbon, this time it also got the tiny flowers (2 mm), which represents the birth of every child in the family. I added the loose leaves without flowers) myself, because after the war my grandparents also took care of foster children in their farm.

In this sort of antique linen cupboards there would be present a tiny bottle of eau de cologne, brandmark 4711, I also made one for my mini Grandma.

At a miniature show I ever bought a few (laser cut perspex) perfume bottles, of which I have now used one that had the right shape. At the neck I have trimmed it a little rounder so that the cap (Bindels Ornaments) would fit.

I cut out a red band and a "seal" of thin paper, which are so characteristic of these bottles of eau de cologne. With the help of a cocktail stick, the seal and the top, of the gold-colored cap, got a dot of red nail polish, for given them a bit more embossed relief.

After gluing a self-made image, I found the edges of this print not neat enough after my liking. I got rid of this by adding just a little bit gel nail polish, on the sides of the bottle.
An additional effect was that the bottle looked like it was really filled, and I......? I was sooo happy with this additional effect :D!

The glass was bought years ago at a miniatures show, unfortunately I don’t know anymore from who. The flask is bought of Phyl Grenyer, website: www.glasscraftuk.com.
All together these are the belongings so far, the doors of my linen cupboard will be closed now.
But there will be more things in the drawers, something what was also stored away in this sort of cupboards in that time. There will be something on the cupboard too, so the fun is not over yet for restoring this antique linen cupboard in miniature1:12 scale ;)!
Thank you for your kind comments, a warm welcome to my newest followers.
I wish you all a nice week!

Rozen en vlinders in ‘rollen’ ? / Roses and butterflies in ‘rolls’ ?

Bovenstaande foto's komen van het internet
Above pictures are from the internet

Last week I was able to work a lot on the content of my antique Twentse linen cupboard.
I unfortunately couldn´t find enough information on the internet, regarding to the original and traditional content of this sort of cupboards. That is why I’ve made the content of my miniature linen cupboard, based on the little information that I could found online.
It seems that in the big farm, where my Grandpa was born at the end of 19th century, also was such a linen cupboard. However, my real Grandpa and Grandma didn't have one in their small farm, so that was exactly the reason for me to make one for my miniature Grandma, just to spoil her a bit ;).

Motif of a butterfly, folded in a real life Twents linen cupboard, picture is of the internet.

After ironing the linen of these antique Twentse linen cupboards was rolled up, in regular rolls, but also in rolls with a "rose" and "butterfly" motif. This was/is an art in itself, this traditional art is still practiced in Twente (= a region at the eastside of The Netherlands) and is called "dook (means cloth) rolling".
These linen rolls were stacked in the cupboard and were the dowry of the bride, it was passed on from generation to generation: so it's heritage.

Although I used sewing pins and two clamp tweezers, they kept on 'rolling' ;O!

This is how the rear side of the miniature linen roll looks like

The roll at the bottom side was the way too large, former roll of the cupboard

I’ve tried to make the sort of rolls of linen with the butterfly motif for in my miniature linen cupboard, but it was more difficult/complicated in miniature than I thought beforehand. For the miniature bed linen I’ve used a few white, very thin handkerhciefs, the fabric is cut in strips of 4 cm wide, once double ironed with a hot iron, whereafter the rolling started. The eventual rolls are 18 mm in diameter, so you can see that the ‘rolling’ of these wasn’t a piece of cake ;). And because I wanted to create a butterfly motif for my mini Grandma, it was extra hard. See the process at the above pictures: the tiny rolls are connected to each other (!!), so even more less space for my fingers tips. In addition, they were alternately turned back and forth, so that didn't make it any easier.
In real life these women used a pair of scissors for creating the motif of the butterfly, but in miniature I wasn’t able to use a scissors of course, even not a very tiny one. That’s why I used sewing pins, so that the linen fabric didn’t unroll, while I was rolling up an other tiny part…..phew, what a job.

The linen was mainly used for making bed linen. The linen undershirts were also made of this linen, they got a monogram, embroidered in red yarn. Sometimes, at the bottom of this pile of undershirts, there was one with a black embroidered monogram. This was the shroud, destined for the farmer when he passed away, but an other source says it was destined to the farmer’s wife.

Because the making and embroidery of piles of the handmade mini under shirts (in the whole, read: with front- and back panels AND sleeves) and miniature bed linen would asked a lot of time AND because this amount of linen than wouldn’t fit in the mini cupboard too, I ‘cheated’ a bit in making fake undershirts and in embroidering these piles of linen ;O.
The ‘linen’ was at first ‘embroidered’ (red/black sewing yarn), ironed (NOT glued) around strips of printing paper, folded like a accordion and afterwards once more pressed with a hot iron. Finally the linen is tied together with red silk ribbons.

Zó heb ik de letters geborduurd
I embroidered the characters this way

My miniature monogram exists of two characters, ‘H’ and a ‘K’, the initials of my grandfather. Together piled up, the half vissible characters look like tey are tiny crosses, but I can assure you that, after being embroidered seperatly, they're really the characters ‘h’ and a ‘k’ ;).

Sometimes hot ironing can be difficult, even for the most experienced, but just for a moment distracted, housewife.….. ;O

Also the drawers are filled in with my handmade, old embroidered bed sheets, but than folded in smaller size, so they would fit in. It would be a pity to throw them away, isn’t it ;) ?

Next thing I'm already busy with, is remaking the bible, the flask of gin, the glass and the wedding pipe, or replace them by better miniatures. Also the postal letters, which were commonly stored in these cupboards, the sewing box and the box with memories will be refined.
So…..to be continued!
Thank you so much for your kind comments, each comment means alot to me.
I wish you all a nice week!!

For more than 20 years my miniature antique Twentse linen cupboard looked like this, so time for an addition of miniature “linen”. Somewhere I had stored some cotton printed cloths, which I’ve ever bought on a miniatures fair of Catherine Ferouelle.

After adding the cloths to the rest of the linen in the cupboard, I thought that the white colors didn’t fit to each other, the new cloths were far too white. But above all I thought that the rest of the linen, which in fact are cut to fit pieces of tissues), didn't lie flat enough on the shelf, so I took everything out of the cupboard, and make way for new ;).

In the drawers of the cupboard I also found back the sheets, which I embroidered then: they were way too large, also folded way in too large pieces and here and there they were yellowed…

…I’ve then even sewed the seams with a tiny needle after embroidering.

Time to do the laundry: freshly washed, I rolled the linen in the corresponding molton blanket for gently wringing out the water, otherwise it would maybe damage the embroidery.

I then pressed the linen with a hot iron and knotted it in strips of fabric, in order to continue the drying process on the central heating.

Now the cupboard itself was on turn, I took the shelves out and gave them a new piece of lace.
The piece of lace at the bottom side was in it, above you see the new lace.
I won this beautiful bobbin lace with a giveaway from (and is made by) Rosa Maria, her blog: http://bolillos-rosamaria.blogspot.com/
Rosa makes the most beautiful bobbin lace, so I’m very happy with it.

The new linen (of Catherine Ferouelle) is already on the shelves.

Other objects, which belong in this sort of antique linen cupboard, are i.e. a wedding pipe, a bible and a flask of gin with a glass, but I’ll tell you more about it later, in another blog post after the makeover of these objects.

To my surprise I found in the old cardboard box for sewing utensils back a needle holder (5 mm long), I made it then from a cocktail stick. I do remember that I then almost sanded away all of my nails and finger tips, but I did it ;O)!!

As final job I painted the handles and the key, which had a new “gold” color, into a bronze color. Well, that’s it for now, by the way: have you seen the cupboard? Than I close the doors till later.
I’ll see if I can do some embroidery on the new bed sheets.
To be continued ;)!
Thank you for your kind comments, have a nice week!
