Herinneringen uit de oude doos / Antiquated keepsakes

Mijn échte Oma bewaarde van alles: oude krantenknipsels, veertjes, bloemetjes, oude brieven en ga zo maar verder. Een aantal dingen zaten in de oude bijbel, zoals het pauwenveertje, waarover ik in mijn vorige blog bericht al geschreven heb. Omdat ik haar die antieke linnenkast gegeven heb, moest ik natuurlijk ook een houten bewaardoos maken om van alles in te bewaren. Sinds een paar jaar had ik al deze twee gefineerde houten dozen al tussen mijn zelfgemaakte miniaturen liggen, zodat ze alleen een make-over en een ‘nieuwe’ inhoud nodig hadden.

My Grandma in real life was a true lover of keepsakes: old messages of the papers, feathers, flowers, old letters and so on. A few of those things were in the old bible, like the peacock feather I told you about it in my previous blog post. Because I gave her an antique linen cupboard, I had to make her a wooden box for storing all of it in. Since a few years I already had two veneered miniature wooden boxes among my self made miniatures, so they only needed a make-over and a bit more ‘new’ content.

Van linksboven op de foto kun je in deze houten doos oorhangers met een parel en een ring zien liggen. In het vakje rechts ernaast: een zakhorloge, gebroken parelsnoer, een liefdesjuweel (met oog) en een briefopener met parelmoer handvat. In het vakje eronder zitten nog wat andere herinneringen, zoals een stukje bergkristal, twee (echte) schelpjes, een stekeltje van een zee-egel en wat muntjes. In het laatste vakje links hiernaast liggen oude brieven en oude sleutels.

At the top left on the photo, you can see in this wooden box old earrings with pearl drops and a ring. In the compartment at the top right: a pocket watch, a broken pearl necklace, a Lover's Eye jewel and a paper knife with a mother-of-pearl handle. In the compartment right below there are some other memories, such as a piece of rock crystal, two (real) tiny sea shells, a spike of a sea urchin and some silver coins. In the last compartment on the below left you find old letters and old keys.

Het enige wat ik toegevoegd heb is de bril (website: Nalladris), waarvan de glazen zijn gemaakt met een druppel transparante nagellak. De briefopener heb ik ook bij hen gekocht, daarna heb ik zelf het handvat beschilderd met parelmoerkleurige acrylverf.

The only thing I added tot his box is the eyeglasses (website: Nalladris), ofwhich I made the glasses by using just a tiny drop of transparent nailpolish. The paper knife is also bought from Nalladris, I’ve only added acrylic paint, in mother of pearl color, to the handle.

Op internet heb ik gezocht naar rouwbrieven en ‘gewone’ brieven, die ik verkleind heb naar schaal 1:12 en uitgeprint (voor eigen gebruik). 

Samengebonden met een heel smal kantje gaan ze in een van de lades van de antieke linnenkast, en naar oud gebruik: rouwbrieven links en ’gewone’ post rechts.

I’ve searched on the internet for notifications of death and ‘normal’ letters, which I’ve converted these into 1:12 scale and printed them out (for personal use). 

Tied them together with a very small piece of lace they go into one of the drawers of the antique linen cupboard, and according to old custom: notifications of death on the leftside and the ‘normal’ post at the right side.

De andere houten doos bevat naaigerei en aanverwante artikelen. Ik ben begonnen met de zelfgemaakte maasbol (ook gebruikt om sokken te stoppen), om het een wat oudere en houten look te geven, hiervoor heb ik gewoon een paar zeer dunne laagjes beits gebruikt.

The other wooden box contains sewing utensils and related items. I started with the self made darning ball (also used for darning socks), for giving it an older and more wooden look, wherefore I simply used a few very thin layers of woodstain.

De naaldenkoker, uit een van mijn vorige berichten, heb ik eerst gebeitst, daarna heb ik bronzen metallic verf gebruikt om het een metaallook te geven.

The needle holder, from one of my previous blog posts, is first stained, than I’ve used it with a bronze metallic paint to give it a metal look.

Verder zitten er knopen, drukknoopjes (zwart), klosjes garen, een schaar en een stukje oud kant. Onder het dekseltje met het geëmailleerde viooltje, als handvat (=oorbel bewerkt met nagellak), liggen wat sleutels in het vakje. Ook aan deze doos heb ik een bril (van Nalladris) toegevoegd, want mijn Oma had zeer slechte ogen vanwege haar diabetes.

There are also buttons, press buttons (black), spools of thread, scissors and a piece of old lace. Under the lid with the enamelled violet as a handle (= earring decorated with nail polish), some keys are in the compartment. I also added glasses (from Nalladris) to this box, because my grandmother had very bad eyes because of her diabetes.

Het naaldenkokertje ligt hier op een geplette graankorrel van het brood tijdens mijn lunch....gewoon om te laten zien hoe klein het is.

De houten doos is 22 x 22 mm in het vierkant.

Ik heb de houten doos met naaigerei bovenop de antieke linnenkast weggezet, achter het porseleinen kaststel. Het originele 5delige kaststel wat op dit soort kasten behoort te staan in het echte leven. Ik heb het stel nog niet gevonden in het mini, ik denk ook dat als ik het zou vinden het veel te duur voor mij zou zijn.

The wooden sewing box is tucked away on top of the antique linen cupboard, behind the porcelain vases. This set of originally 5 vases is commonly standing on top of this sort cupboards in real life. 

I haven’t found yet this sort of original set of porcelain vases, in miniature, I also guess that would also be far too expensive for me if I did.

Dit kaststel is gemaakt door Cocky Wildschut, zij staat op veel miniatuurbeurzen met haar prachtige werk.

Mijn mini Oma is echter de “koning te rijk” met dit luxe stel, iets wat mijn echte Oma nooit in haar bezit zou hebben gehad.

This set of vases is bought from/made by Cocky Wildschut, she is often to be found at miniature fairs with her beautiful work.

However, my mini Grandma is more than happy with this luxury set, it’s something my real life Grandma never would have had.

Nu is mijn antieke Twentse linnenkast in miniatuur écht af! De deuren gaan nu dicht en behouden alle rijkdom en schatten voor de volgende generatie ;).

Renovatie van de antieke Twentse linnenkast, in miniatuur / Renovation of the antique, Twente linen cupboard, in miniature

Al meer dan 20 jaar zag mijn miniatuur antieke Twentse linnenkast er zó uit, tijd voor een aanvulling in miniatuur “linnen”. Ergens had ik nog wat bedrukte katoenen doeken liggen, die ik ooit op een beurs gekocht heb bij Catherine Ferouelle.

For more than 20 years my miniature antique Twentse linen cupboard looked like this, so time for an addition of miniature “linen”. Somewhere I had stored some cotton printed cloths, which I’ve ever bought on a miniatures fair of Catherine Ferouelle.

Nadat ik de doeken had toegevoegd aan de rest van het linnengoed vond ik de kleuren wit niet bij elkaar passen, de nieuwe doeken warn veel te wit. Maar bovenal vond ik het overige linnengoed (in stukjes geknipte tissues) niet mooi aangesloten/plat liggen op de plank, dus alles ging uit de kast, hupsakee, weg ermee ;).

After adding the cloths to the rest of the linen in the cupboard, I thought that the white colors didn’t fit to each other, the new cloths were far too white. But above all I thought that the rest of the linen, which in fact are cut to fit pieces of tissues), didn't lie flat enough on the shelf, so I took everything out of the cupboard, and make way for new ;).

In de lades van de kast vond ik ook nog de lakentjes terug, die ik toen heb geborduurd: véél te groot, ook te groot opgevouwen en hier en daar vergeeld…

In the drawers of the cupboard I also found back the sheets, which I embroidered then: they were way too large, also folded way in too large pieces and here and there they were yellowed…

…ik had ze toen zelfs gezoomd met een kleine naainaald na het borduren.

…I’ve then even sewed the seams with a tiny needle after embroidering.

Tijd voor een wasje: lekker fris gewassen en in de bijbehorende molton onderdeken gerold om zachtjes het water eruit te wringen, anders beschadigde het borduursel misschien.

Time to do the laundry: freshly washed, I rolled the linen in the corresponding molton blanket for gently wringing out the water, otherwise it would maybe damage the embroidery.

Ik heb het linnengoed daarna opgeperst met een heet strijkijzer en in repen stof geknoopt om op de centrale verwarming verder te kunnen laten drogen.

I then pressed the linen with a hot iron and knotted it in strips of fabric, in order to continue the drying process on the central heating.

Nu de linnenkast aanpakken, de planken eruit en ze voorzien van een nieuw strookje echt kant.

Het onderste stukje kant zat erin, erboven zie je het nieuwe kant.

Rosa maakt echt prachtig gekant klost kant, ik ben hier dus heel erg blij mee.

Now the cupboard itself was on turn, I took the shelves out and gave them a new piece of lace.

The piece of lace at the bottom side was in it, above you see the new lace.

Rosa makes the most beautiful bobbin lace, so I’m very happy with it.

Het nieuwe linnengoed (van Catherine Ferouelle) ligt alvast op de planken.

The new linen (of Catherine Ferouelle) is already on the shelves.

Andere voorwerpen, die in zo’n antieke linnenkast horen, zijn een bruidspijp, een bijbel en een flacon jenever met een glaasje, waarover meer uitleg in een ander blogbericht over de makeover van deze voorwerpen.

Other objects, which belong in this sort of antique linen cupboard, are i.e. a wedding pipe, a bible and a flask of gin with a glass, but I’ll tell you more about it later, in another blog post after the makeover of these objects.

Tot mijn verrassing vond ik in de oude kartonnen doos met naaibenodigdheden ook een naaldenkokertje (5 mm lang) terug, ik heb het gemaakt van een cocktailprikker. Ik weet nog dat ik toen mijn nagels en vingers er bijna afgeschuurd had, maar het is gelukt ;O)!!

To my surprise I found in the old cardboard box for sewing utensils back a needle holder (5 mm long), I made it then from a cocktail stick. I do remember that I then almost sanded away all of my nails and finger tips, but I did it ;O)!!

Als laatste karweitje heb ik de handgrepen en de sleutel geschilderd van nieuwe “goud”kleur naar brons. Zo, kastje gezien? Dan gaan de deurtjes dicht, tot later. 
Ik ga kijken of ik al wat nieuwe lakens kan borduren.

As final job I painted the handles and the key, which had a new “gold” color, into a bronze color. Well, that’s it for now, by the way: have you seen the cupboard? Than I close the doors till later. 
I’ll see if I can do some embroidery on the new bed sheets.
