Ik sloot mijn vorige bericht af met te vertellen dat de
vloer van de opkamer van de boerderij bestond uit grenen vloerplanken. Nu ik er
tijdens mijn zelf-isolatie niet op uit kan om dingen aan te schaffen, ben ik
gaan zoeken naar wat ik nog had liggen aan hout. Ik kwam van alles tegen maar
niet iets wat op grenen leek, dus had ik het bijna opgegeven. Bijna, want ik
heb een grachtenpand staan (nog steeds in aanbouw en dat zal waarschijnlijk nooit afkomen, ben
ik bang ;O)), en ik kwam daar dus tijdens mijn zoektocht in terecht. En jaaaaa,
dáár lag het, al bijna 20 jaar(!) en bijna helemaal vergeten: mijn strips écht
eikenfineer, nee, géén plastic! Ik heb het ruim 25 jaar geleden gekocht in de plaatselijke
bouwmarkt, die inmiddels allang weer weg is hier en waar ik van alles apart kon
bestellen wat ik nodig had en zelfs wat standaard niet in het assortiment van deze winkel
zat ;).
I ended my previous post by telling you that the floor of
the upstairs room of the farm consisted of pine floorboards. Now that I cannot
go out to buy wood at the DIY (due to my self-isolation), I started looking for
what wood I still had in stock. I ran into everything but nothing that looked
like pine wood, so I almost gave up. Almost, because I have my miniature canal
house (still under construction, will probably never be finished I am afraid ;O)) and I
ended up with looking in it after my thorough search. And YES, there it was,
for almost 20 years (!) and almost completely forgotten: my strips of real oak
veneer, no, it's not plastic veneer! I bought it more than 25 years ago in the
local DIY, which is already closed for years now and where I could order
everything separately of what I needed and even what was not standard in the range of
this store ;).
Dus ik was overgelukkig om dit eikenfineer terug te vinden,
het lijkt zelfs een beetje op ‘t ‘grenen’. Dus bij gebrek aan wat beters ben ik
mijn MDF gemaakte vloer voor de opkamer gaan fineren. Ik had de vloer al eerder
zwart geschilderd, zodat er geen MDF meer zichtbaar zou zijn tussen de kieren
tussen de grenen vloerplanken.
So I was more than happy to re-find this oak veneer, it even
looks a bit like ‘pine wood’. So for lack of anything better I started veneering
my MDF floor of the upstairs room. I had previously painted the floor black, so
the MDF underground would be not visible anymore through the cracks in between
the future pine floor boards.
Om mijn aanrecht tegen de hitte te beschermen heb ik er een
paar oude plaatjes MDF op gelegd, waarop ik kon werken. Ik heb de fineer
stroken (zie geel rondje) op de MDF vloer gelegd, daar waar ik ze wilde hebben, de strookjes op
maat gesneden met een hobby mes, en om mijn strijkijzer tegen de lijm te
beschermen, daaroverheen een stuk bakpapier (rode pijl) en daarna pas met een warm
strijkijzer langzaam en iets lichtjes drukkend over de stroken heen gegaan.
Ondanks dat de lijmlaag al meer dan 25 jaar oud was, werkte het nog prima.
To protect my countertop from the heat, I put a few old
sheets of MDF on it, on top of these I placed the floor. I placed the veneer
strips (in yellow circle) on the MDF floor where I wanted them, cut the strips to size with a hobby
knife and to protect my iron, I then put over a piece of baking paper (red arrow) and only
then with a warm iron I was slowly sliding and pressing down (just a bit) on the
strips. Despite the fact that the layer of glue was more than 25 years old, it
still worked fine.
Rondom het drie treedstrapje moest ik het fineer zó plakken
dat de MDF vloer uit planken leek te bestaan. Het was moeilijk om in zo’n
kleine ruimte de punt van je strijkijzer te zetten en het goed aan te drukken
zodat de lijm pakt op de MDF, maar ’t werkte.
Na het afsnijden van de randen en lichtjes bijschuren was de
vloer klaar om verder bewerkt te worden.
Around the opening of the 3 steps staircase I had to glue
the veneer in a way that it looked as if the MDF floor consisted out of floor
boards. It was difficult to put the tip of my iron in such a small space and to
press it down well so that the glue sets on the MDF, but it did work.
After cutting of excess at the edges and lightly sanding,
the floor was ready for further processing.
Om te zien waarmee en hoe ik de vloer ga bewerken heb ik
alvast een paar restantjes van eikenfineer op papier geplakt en op
verschillende manieren bewerkt. Maar het was gisteravond al donker, dus heb ik
tot vandaag gewacht om bij daglicht het resultaat te beoordelen en te kiezen
wat ik ga doen. Over een paar dagen hoop ik het resultaat na afwerking hier te
kunnen laten zien.

To see with what and how I am going to edit the floor, I
have already glued a few leftover oak veneer pieces on paper and edited in
different ways. But it was already dark yesterday evening, so I waited until
today to judge the result in daylight and choose what to do. In a few days I
hope to be able to show you the result, after finishing.

You're right: the cellar of the farmhouse is indeed situated for about 2/3 part
under groundfloor level and about 1/3 above this level and therefore it can
have a window there at this place. Sorry, I forgot to tell this in my last blog
posts, because in my imagination it feels if I almost am 'living' in my farmhouse. But I hope it's clear to you now? I also have to know better, because not everyone is
living in the Netherlands, and knows what I am talking about, isnt’it? ;O)
