Om te dineren… / For dinner…

…..gebruik je een servet. En omdat het eten voor mijn mini kippetjes betreft, heb ik het servet maar gevouwen in de vorm van een kip ;D! 

Nog nooit zoiets gezien, kwam ik tegen op internet.

…..you use a napkin. And because it concerns food for my mini chickens, I've folded the napkin in the shape of a chicken ;D! 

I've never seen this before, I found it on the net.

Van dun karton heb ik een zinken voerbak gemaakt, deze was vrij algemeen in de jaren ’50. Het kostte wat moeite om goede foto’s hiervan te vinden, maar uiteindelijk is het me gelukt.

I’ve made a zinc chicken feeder of thin card board, this one was quite common in the 50s. It took some effort to find good pictures on the internet, but finally I succeeded.

Zo ziet de voerton eruit, nadat hij geverfd is. Ik heb een aantal kleuren acrylverf gemixd om het zinken uiterlijk te krijgen. Dat viel nog best tegen.

This is how the feeder looks like, after he was painted. I've mixed some colors of acrylic paint, in order to get the zinc look. It was not that easy. 

Om kippenvoer te krijgen was weer een ander probleempje, uiteindelijk heb ik een zakje gedroogde kruiden gebruikt. Zoals je kunt zien was het een ‘tip van de chef(kok)’ ;). Dat heb ik dus gebruikt voor de vulling van de voerton ;O!

To get chicken feed was another issue, finally I’ve used dried herbs for it. As you can see it was a ‘tip of the chef(cook)’ (see the small herb bag on the picture) ;). So I’ve used this for filling the chicken feeder ;O!

Van al dat eten krijg je dorst, dus moest er ook wat te drinken komen voor de kippetjes. Een drinkemmer en ook die is gemaakt van dun karton en heeft een zinken uiterlijk gekregen met verschillende laagjes acrylverf.

After so much food you get thirsty, so there had to come a special bucket for drinking water for my mini chicks. This bucket is made of the same thin card board and it got its zinc look by using different layers of acrylic paint.

Giet water in, wat water zal er overigens weer uitstromen, zodat de kippetjes een slokje kunnen nemen als ze dorst hebben. Deze miniatuur drinkemmer kan geopend en gesloten worden, zoals een echte.

Pour some water in the bucket, some of the water will flow out of the bottom side, so that the chickens can take a sip, if they are thirsty. This miniature drinking bucket can be opened and closed, just like a real one.

Oeps, ik denk dat de haan een slokje teveel op heeft, die viert al weekend ;)!

Lekker spelen met ‘Jakkiebak kippenkak’! / Enjoyed playing in the muck!

Kippenkak maken is niet zo moeilijk: witte verf, maar dan met nog iets ‘organisch’ erin. Maar hoe kom je dáár aan? Nou, het gebeurde eigenlijk ‘vanzelf’! In de keuken mikte ik een theezakje in de afvalemmer, dat er keurig naast belandde en openbarstte…….grrrr :S! Terwijl ik het opruimde, kwam ik op het idee om deze (groene) thee op een schoteltje uit te spreiden en te drogen op de verwarming, daarna heb ik het nog wat fijn gewreven tussen mijn vingers en ik had geurloze organische poep ;O!! Beetje witte, zwarte acrylverf en lijm erbij en smeren maar, héérlijk met poep in mijn minikippenhok knoeien, hihihi!!

Making chicken poo is not that difficult, but it also must contain something ‘organic’. But how can you get that effect? Well, it ‘automatically’ happened! I was in my kitchen, throwing away a used tea bag, but it landed neatly just next to the bin and it burst open……grrr :S! While I cleaned it up, I got the idea to spread out this (green) tea on a saucer and for drying it on the central heating. After it was dry I’ve rubbed it a bit between my fingers and I had my odorless organic poo ;O!! Add some white, black acrylic paint and glue, than you can smear it everywhere. I’ve enjoyed playing with the muck in my hen house, hehehe!!

Voor die enigszins zwarte deeltjes van de poep had ik weer wat mazzel. Ik had iets in schaal uitgerekend en terwijl ik op het drogen van wat verf zat te wachten, gumde ik het weer uit met mijn synthetische gum, waardoor er piepkleine, zwarte rolletjes op het papier ontstonden: perfect :D! Beetje witte verf erop, klaar!

For finding out the somewhat black parts in the chicken poo, I've had some luck again. I had done some calculations with my pencil on a piece of paper and while I was waiting for the paint would be dry, I erased it with my synthetic eraser, which did left teeny tiny, black rolls on the paper: perfect: D! With a bit of white paint on it, done! 

Van mijn broer, die kippen houdt, heb ik een poos terug al een zakje met echte kippenveren gekregen. In zeer kleine stukjes gesneden en met poep vermengd (;O) is het bijna echte mest.

A while ago I’ve got a small plastic bag, filled with real feathers of my brother’s chickens. I’ve cut them into very small parts and mixed together with the poo (;O) it is almost real chicken muck.

Onder de zitstokken van de kippen van mijn Opa waren in de jaren '50 houten frames bevestigd, waarop gaas was gespijkerd om de kippenpoep op te vangen. Dat scheelde ook in tijd bij het schoonmaken van het kippenhok. Beetje zaagsel erbij, dit is mijn miniatuur ’opvang’ voor het grootste deel van de mest!

Under the roosts for the chickens of my Grandfather (in the 50s), there were wooden frames, whereon gauze was nailed in order to catch most of the chicken muck. This system saved a lot of time with the cleaning of the hen house. Together with a bit of sawdust is this my miniature collector of most of the muck!

Kippen hebben een legnest nodig, dus heb ik er een paar in een (kartonnen) hok gemaakt, zodat ze in alle rust hun eitje kunnen leggen. Het hok stond eerst op poten, maar was te hoog. Ik heb de poten ingekort en daardoor ontstond een schuilplaats voor de kleinste kuikens in het hok ;).

For laying an egg the chickens must have a nest, so I’ve made a few of these and put them together in a (cardboard and wood) hutch. This hutch was placed on wooden legs, but it became too high. I’ve shortened the legs, whereby a shelter was emerged for the smallest baby chicks in the hen house ;).

Ze hebben hun eigen voerbak (gemaakt door Patricia, www.woolytalesminiatures.blogspot.com ) gevuld met speciaal kuikenmeel. In wat zaagsel kunnen ze veilig voor de andere kippen onder het legnesthok rondscharrelen.

They have their own manger (which is made by Patricia, www.woolytalesminiatures.blogspot.com ), which is filled with special food for baby chicks. Together with some sawdust they can potter about under the hutch with the nests, safely for the other hens.

At the left side, there is the hen sitting on her nest with her baby chicks. The hen is made of resin, I’ve bought her some years ago on a miniature fair……

………en rechts, het lijkt er op dat ik er zelfs nog een stuk heb aangebouwd ;O!

Hang- en sluitwerk / Hinges and locksmithing

Momenteel ben ik bezig met het afwerken van het kippenhok, dus moest er een deur komen met hang- en sluitwerk. Ik heb de typische hengen voor de deur gemaakt van een reststukje metalen strip, wat ik in mijn rommellaatje had liggen…….nóóit iets weggooien ;O!

De grendel is gemaakt van een bamboestokje, tot heel dun afgeschuurd, gaatje erin geboord (0,7mm) en daarna het bovenste stukje van een speld erin gelijmd met secondelijm. Ooit heb ik in een hobbywinkel een doosje korte spelden gekocht, die zelfs een beetje buigbaar zijn. Daarvan heb ik de schroefoogjes gemaakt voor de grendel. Het geheel is met donkerbruine (roestkleur) verf beschilderd.

Alles bij elkaar staat op de tweede foto weergegeven.

At the moment I’m busy with the last things for my hen house, so I had to make a door with hinges and a bolt shutter. I’ve made the typical hinges of a leftover from a metal strip, which I had somewhere in my stuff……never throw away leftovers in your trash bin ;O!

The drop shutter is made of a bamboo skewer, I’ve sand it down, as thin as possible, drilled a little hole in it and I’ve glued (in this small hole) the upper piece of a sewing pin with superglue. In a hobby shop I’ve once bought a small box with short pins, lucky for me they are a bit bendable. From these pins I’ve made some screw eyes for the bolt shutter. The whole is painted in a rusty dark brown color.

All in all is to be seen on the second picture.

Aan de binnenkant van het deurkozijn zit nog een haakje aan een schroefoogje (gemaakt van 0,4 mm dun metaaldraad), zodat de deur van binnenuit eventjes op slot kan, bijv. tijdens het eieren rapen ;)!

At the inner side of the door frame there is a small hook at an screw eye (made of 0,4 mm thin metal wire), so the door can be locked from the inside, for example during collecting eggs ;)!

Ik heb voor het dak ook ‘windveren’ gemaakt, ze horen op de typische daken van (oudere) gebouwen hier in onze regio.

I’ve made some shelves in order to add them to the roof in a special way, which is typical for the (older) buildings here in our region.

Voor mijn kippenhok heb ik twee verschillende bouwstijlen van deze regio door elkaar gebruikt, zoals je kunt zien op deze foto’s.

For my hen house I’ve used a mix of two typical architectural styles from this region, as you can see on these pictures.

Op deze foto’s kun je duidelijk het bakstenen randje zien waarop het kippenhok is gebouwd, evenals de ingangen, die soms werden gewisseld. Bijvoorbeeld als de kippen een ander stuk grond krijgen voor hun ren.

In these pictures you can clearly see the edge of bricks, on which the hen house is built, as well as the entrances, which were sometimes changed. For example if the chickens got an other 'fresh' piece of ground for their poultry run.

Zo ziet het kippenhok er nu uit, de binnenkant wacht……..én ik moet nog wat viezigheid maken :D!

Tussendoor / In between

Ik heb niet veel te laten zien, maar ik ben wel druk aan het bouwen aan mijn kippenhok. Dus even een korte stand van zaken over de vloer van het hok, alhoewel, zeg maar gerust kippenkasteel ;)!  

De vloer is ook gemaakt van foamboard, wat enerzijds is beplakt met dun lichtbruin karton. Maar bij nader inzien heb ik als vloer toch maar de andere kant (met grijs karton) gebruikt, want die was voorzien van een opstaand (hout)randje.

Ik wil namelijk dat de vloer uit het kippenhok gehaald kan worden, zodat ik er steeds in kan om er verschillende scenes in te kunnen fotograferen.

I haven't much to show you now, but I’m still busy with building my hen house. So, just a brief update about the floor of the hen house, although you might even say chickens castle ;)! 

The floor is also made of foam board, which is covered on one side with thin light brown cardboard. But on second thoughts I've chosen as the upper side of the floor, the other side (the one with the gray card board), because it also has a raised (wooden) edge.

I wants the floor can be removed from the chicken coop, so that I can photograph different scenes in the henhouse.

Omdat het opstaande randje zo kaal leek, heb ik het beplakt met de rest van de ‘baksteentjes’ en dit keer ook met bovenkanten van de bakstenen, zodat de rand een soort van 3D effect krijgt. Eigenlijk is dit soort ouderwetse kippenhokken in het echt ook gebouwd op een bakstenen onderrand en het heeft een betonvloer.

Because the raised edge seemed so bare, I have glued the leftovers of the 'bricks' on it. This time I've cut the top for the bricks, they're made of the same sandpaper that I used for the rest.  Actually in RL this old fashioned hen house has a concrete floor and it is also build on an edge of bricks, so now the raised edge of my miniatuur hen house gets a sort of 3D effect.

Hier zie je het randje rondom beplakt met bakstenen en behalve wat vuiligheid, is de vloer nu klaar.

Here you see the raised edge with the new upper side on the bricks and except for the filth, the floor is ready now.

Het volgende geduldkarweitje is het dak: er komen Oud-Hollandse dakpannen op het dak. Ik ben er al mee begonnen, maar het vraagt enorm veel tijd. Uit stroken van 3 cm breed dun oranje karton snij ik de 2 cm brede dakpnnen. Elke dakpan krijgt een laagje acrylverf, gemengd uit 5 kleuren verf, waarna ze goed moeten drogen en ik hetzelfde proces nog twee keer moet herhalen. De eerste 6 dakpannen die klaar zijn, kun je linksboven zien liggen op het keukenpapier. Op die manier moet ik er nog ruim 150 maken :S! 

Dus voor dit weekend betekent het dat ik nog wel even 'onder de panne' ben :D!

The next chore requires lots of patience, because that's the roof: there will be old Dutch roof tiles on the roof. First I've cut strips of thin bright orange cardboard, then I've cut them in pieces of 2 x 3 cm. Then I'll paint them one by one, it is very time consuming. Each tile get a first layer of acrylic paint, mixed of 5 colors of paint (diluted with water), allow them to dry well and then I'll have to repeat the same process twice. The first six roof tiles are ready, you can see them drying on kitchen paper at the left upper corner. That way I'll still have to make about 150 roof tiles :S !! 

So, for this weekend I’ll be quite busy :D!

Wit en groen / White and green

Voor het eerst heb ik foamboard (3 mm dik) gebruikt om iets te maken in miniatuur: mijn kippenhok. Dit materiaal vraagt om nogal wat creatieve oplossingen, vooral om het zo te kunnen bewerken dat het resultaat naar mijn zin is. Nadat ik een begin had gemaakt, besloot ik om alle vier de wanden apart te maken, zodat ik het kippenhok daarna in elkaar kan zetten, een soort prefab woning....voor kipjes ;)!

For the very first time I’ve used foam board (3 mm thick) to make something in miniature: my hen house. This material asks for creative solutions, especially to edit it, for getting the result that I want. After I’ve made a start, I decided to make all of the four walls separately, so that after they are finished, I can put the hen house together, like a sort of prefab house....for chickens ;)!

Na het uitsnijden van ramen en deur, plakte ik de randen met gemetselde bakstenen onderaan op elk van de muren.  Toen was al duidelijk dat de muren krom gingen staan….:S

Ik heb dat probleempje opgelost door aan beide zijden dun gekleurd karton (grijs buiten en binnenin lichtbruin) te plakken en dat werkte prima: de muren trokken vanzelf weer recht :D!

After cutting out the windows and the door, I’ve glued the edges of brickwork at the bottom side of each of the walls. After that it was clear to me that the walls warped….:S

I’ve solved this problem by gluing thin colored cardboard (grey on the outside and light brown on the inside) at both sides of the walls and it worked out well: the walls were straight again :D! 

Ik heb lichtbruin karton gekozen voor de binnenkant van het kippenhok, want dan hoef ik het niet te beplakken met hout, anders wordt het gebouw alsnog zo zwaar en daarom had ik nu juist voor foamboard gekozen J! Nadat ik het bewerkt had met een dun laagje gesso, opgebracht met een varkensharen kwast en snel uitgestreken, heb ik het goed laten drogen. Daarna heb ik de ‘planken’ erin gekerfd en er barsten van hout in gekerfd met mijn hobby mes.

I’ve chosen for the light brown card board, because I than don’t need to glue wood strips on the inside of the hen house. Than the building will get too much in weight and that was exactly the reason why I did choose for foam board J! After I had painted a quick thin layer of gesso with a bristle brush, I've let dry the layer of gesso very well. Then I’ve carved the pattern of shelves in the card board with my hobby knife.

Hierna waren de 'planken' voor de buitenkant van het kippenhok aan de beurt, dit zijn gesneden repen dun grijs karton. Na het snijden heb ik ze geschilderd in het zogenaamde boerengroen, hiervoor heb ik lukraak 2 blauwe en 2 groene kleuren verf gebruikt.

After this was done I’ve cut some strips of thin grey colored card board for making 'shelves' for the exterior of the hen house. After the cutting was done I painted them in the color ‘boerengroen’ (this is a special green colored paint, which was used by Dutch farmers in earlier times). To mix this paint I’ve used 2 blue and 2 green colors and with these colors I randomly painted the card board strips.

Dus: binnenkant fris witgeschilderd……………………….voorlopig, het is een kippenhok, duh ;)! De buitenkant in boerengroene verf, dat al behoorlijk verschoten is door de zon, waardoor de verf altijd blauwachtig lijkt. Blauwe verf wordt gebruikt om deze speciale kleur groen te verkrijgen en hier kun je dus het blauw in de groene kleur er doorheen zien schijnen ;)!

So: the inside is crispy white…………….for the time being, it’s a hen house ;)! The exterior is painted in a 'farmers' green color, which is already quite faded by the sun, this way the green paint always looks bluish. Blue paint is used for mixing this special green color and here you can see that this blue paint shines through the green color ;)!

Omdat de muren toch nog wat krom gingen trekken door het gebruik van lijm en verf, heb ik besloten om toch een houten geraamte aan de binnenkant te lijmen. Het gebouwtje werd er ook wat steviger van en het lijkt zo net op het geraamte, waarmee je normaal gesproken een kippenhok bouwt.

Because the walls still warped a bit after using glue and paint, I still decided to make a wooden frame at the inside. That way the building is a bit sturdier and it just looks like a wooden frame, which you normally would use for building a hen house.

Even ‘droog’ passen, zo staat het kippenhok er nu bij………tja, er is nog veel werk te doen ;)!

Just a ‘dry’ fit, this is how the hen house looks now.......there still has to be done a lot of work  ;)!

Een vooruitblik op wat komen gaat: vuiligheid ;O! Dus van tevoren heb ik alvast even een raampje opengezet voor wat frisse lucht, iew :D!!
