Zoekend naar iets totaal anders kwam ik in een bewaardoos, die hoog op een schap stond, dit ding tegen. In eerste instantie had ik geen idee wat het was, maar er lag een plastic zakje naast met een A4-papier naast, iets dat de gebruiksaanwijzing voor ‘het ding’ bleek te zijn.
Searching for something quite different I came across a store box, stacked away on a high shelf, whereby I found this 'thing' in it. At first I had no clue what it was, but next to it was lieing a plastic bag with a piece of A4-paper, what appeared to be the instructions of how to use ‘this thing’.
Het was een mal van Hazel Dowd, om een strohoed te kunnen
maken. Het moet jaren geleden zijn dat ik deze mal heb gekocht op een
miniaturen show, want ik kan me niet meer herinneren bij wie, of waar dat was.
En ondanks dat ik met iets heel anders bezig was, besloot ik
meteen de mal te gaan gebruiken en een miniatuur hoed te maken (en ook voor de
broodnodige afwisseling in dezer dagen van lockdown). Nee, geen hoed van
miniatuur stro, maar van hele dunne, katoenen stof, en voor de versteviging van
de stof heb ik een mengsel van Tacky Glue met een drupje water gebruikt.
It appeared to be a mold of Hazel Dowd, for making straw
hats. It must be years ago since I’ve bought this mold on a miniatures fair,
because I don’t remember from who, or where.
And despite I was busy with something quite different, I
instantly decided to use this mold for making a miniature hat (and for the
highly needed variation in these days of lock down ;o)). No, not a hat of
miniature straw, but of very fine, thin cotton fabric, and for the
reinforcement of the fabric I've used a mixture of Tacky Glue with a drop of
water.
Eerst heb ik de stof goed ingesmeerd met dit lijm/watermengsel,
het snel over de mal getrokken, vast gezet met een elastiekje en daarna liet ik
het geheel goed laten drogen. Maar toen ik de gesteven stof van de mal wilde
afhalen, had ik niet in de gaten dat de bovenkant van de mal ietwat taps naar
binnen toeliep en de stof er niet af te halen was zonder het te beschadigen.
Dat was de eerste poging, en ook de tweede verliep niet goed
om die reden. Maar toen ik eenmaal door had waardóór het niet ging, kwam ik tot
de conclusie dat er niets anders op zat dan de hoed in twee delen te maken: de
bol van de hoed en de rand apart. Daarna aan elkaar lijmen en dan heb je een
hoed ;O)!!
First I’ve smeared the glue/water mixture on the fabric,
quickly pulled the fabric over the mold, secured it with a rubber band and then
set it aside for letting it dry thouroughly. But after I tried to take the
stiffened fabric away from the mold, I didn’t see that the crown of the hat
slightly tapered inwards and that therefore I couldn’t get the fabric loose of
the mold without damage.
That was my first attempt, and also the second one was a
failure for the same reason. But after I knew what was going wrong, I concluded
that there was no way to make a hat in one piece, so I had to make a hat in two
pieces: the crown of the hat and the rim, each of them seperatly. After that I
had to glue them together and finally you’ll have a hat ;O)!!
Ik kwam bij opruimen van mijn werktafel nog 3 witte mini
roosjes tegen en samen met een wit zijdelintje (2 mm breed) heb ik mijn eerste
hoed versierd. Van deze eerste hoed was de rand niet perfect afgewerkt, dus heb
ik de rand eerst netjes bijgeknipt en daarna ook een zijdelint randje gegeven.
Whilst cleaning up my work table I came across 3 white
miniature roses and together with a white silk ribbon ( 2 mm wide) I’ve
decorated my first hat. At this first hat the rim wasn’t perfect, so I’ve cut
off excess of the rim and than put a white silk ribbon at the edge.
Hier kun je de binnenkant van de hoed zien: bijna
transparant! De rand veert mee als je hem oppakt, dus op de foto lijkt de hoed
niet rond…..wat hij wel is ;).
Here you can see the inside of the crown: nearly
transparent! The rim is slightly resilient, so on the picture it seems that the
hat is not round……but it IS ;).
De miniatuur hoed is 33 mm in diameter, wat overeenkomt met
een 1:1 hoed van bijna 40 cm in diameter.
The miniature hat has a diameter of 33 mm, which is converted
to a 1:1 hat of about 40 cm in diameter.
In een bewaardoos heb ik even een model opgezocht, om de hoed te showen, helaas heeft het model geen kapsel/haar, maar daardoor kun je goed zien dat de hoed breed genoeg is om op een hoofd met haar te passen ;).
Er lijken deuken in de hoed te zitten, maar dat is niet zo. Dit wordt veroorzaakt door het glanzen van de zijde en de lichtinval/schaduw.
Op bovenstaande foto’s kun je de hoed van alle kanten zien.
In a store box I’ve looked for a model, for showing the hat, unfortunately my model has no hair/hairdo, but therefore you can see well that the hat is wide enough to fit on a head with hair ;).
There seem to be dents in the hat, but it is not so. This is caused by the shine of the silk and the sunlight through the window/shadow.
On the above pictures you can see the hat from all directions.
Hier is het prachtig lenteweer, gelukkig mogen we in onze
tuin ervan genieten. Laten we blij zijn met alle kleine dingen in het leven,
die zijn samen heel belangrijk, vooral nù!!
