Jugando con 'fuego' / Spelen met ‘vuur’/ Play with ‘fire’

Als je iets in miniatuur gemaakt hebt, wil je er graag even ‘mee spelen’, toch? Nou, op die manier is de titel van dit bericht ontstaan (ik hoop alleen dat het goed geschreven is in het Spaans??).

Een week of drie geleden kwam ik op de weekmarkt bij de bloemenman Chrysanten tegen van een speciale soort: Chrysanthemum ‘Fuego’ genaamd. De bloemblaadjes hebben aan elke zijde een andere kleur: van buiten geel, de binnenkant is roestbruin/rood gekleurd. Ik vond dat zo apart, dat ik er meteen aan dacht om zoiets in miniatuur proberen te maken.

When you’ve made something in miniature, you want to ‘play’ with it for awhile, isn’t it? Well, this way the title of my blog post arose (I just hope that I wrote it right in Spanish??).

A week of three ago I was visiting the week market as I came along the flower stall where I saw Chrysanthemums of a special sort: named Chrysanthemem ‘Fuego”. The flower petals have different colors at both sides: outside is yellow, inside the petals are colored in a rusty brown/red. I thought it was so special, that I immediately wanted to try this in miniature.

Na verschillende pogingen had ik één bloem klaar en heb ik het in een vaas gezet, gemaakt door Elisabeth Causeret.

Ik vond het er een beetje ‘kaal’ uitzien, zo’n bloem alleen in de vaas. En op de markt had ik gezien dat ze ook een tak eikenblad bij deze boeketten  Chrysanten hadden gevoegd. Dus ben ik op de fiets gestapt om te gaan kijken naar het herfstblad van de Amerikaanse eik. Momenteel staan de vele eikenbomen, hier in mijn regio, volop in het kleurrijke herfstblad, dus dat fietstochtje duurde niet lang.

After several attempts I had one flower ready and I put it in a vase, made by Elisabeth Causeret.

I thought it looked a bit ‘bare’, just one flower in the vase. And on the week market I’d seen that they also added oak leaves to these bouquets of these Chrysantemums. So I took out my bike to look at the autumn foliage of the American oak. Currently the many oak trees, here in my region, are full of colorful autumn leaves, so that my bike ride didn't last long.

Ik maakte er nog een Chrysant bij dus dit is het resultaat van mijn pogingen om dit soort Chrysant met eikenblad te maken. Het was nog best moeilijk om te doen, maar ik ben tevreden J.

I’ve added an other Chrysanthemum flower, so this is the result of my attempts of making this sort of Chrysanthemum with oak leaves. It was quite hard to do, but I’m satisfied J.

Kokosmatten en stoffer en blik / Coir matting and dust pan and brush

Het is weer herfst dus komen er geregeld natte, vieze voetstappen in huis ;) en daardoor dacht ik aan mijn mini kokosmatten en stoffer en blik, die ik afgelopen voorjaar al heb gemaakt voor in mijn miniatuur boerderij.

It’s autumn again, so regularly you’ll find wet, dirty steps in your house ;) and thereby I thought of my miniature coir matting and dust pan and brush, which I already made in last spring and which will both go into my miniature farm.

Het begon met het vinden van een geschikt stukje katoenen keperband in een fourniturenwinkel, maar thuis gekomen bleek er een flinke dosis nylon in verwerkt, wat jammer. Maar….hierdoor ben ik wel gaan experimenteren en dàt vind ik nu zo leuk aan het maken van mini’s :D!

It started with looking for a piece of cotton, twill tape in a haberdashery shop, but coming back home it seemed that there was a big dose of nylon incorporated, what a pity. BUT…..it was therefore that I started experimenting and THAT is something I love  so much in making miniatures :D!

Zoals je ziet op bovenstaande foto’s had de band een lichte ecru kleur en geen “kokos” kleur, dus heb ik het band beschilderd met bruine acrylverf in de gewenste kleur.

Het band had de neiging tot rafelen dus heb ik de uiteinden met een aansteker voorzichtig verhit, waardoor het smolt. En dat smelten bracht mij weer op een ander idee…..

As you can see on the above pictures the tape had a light cream color and not my bewished “coconut” color, so I painted the tape, using a more suitable brown color of acrylic paint.

The tape had the tendency to fray, so I carefully heated both ends with a lighter, making it melt. And it was this melting that brought me to an other idea ...

….ik kon een gebogen kokosmat maken, zo eentje die buiten over de heg of een hek werd gehangen, klaar om uit te kloppen met de mattenklopper ;).

….I could make a bended coir mat, one which was hanged outdoors over an hedge, or a fence, ready for beating with a carpet beater ;).

En omdat het band nogal stug nylon bezat, kon ik ook een kokosmat maken met gaten erin, versleten van het voeten vegen J.

And because of the rather stiff nylon in the band I could also make a coir matting with holes in it, one which was very much worn out of wiping many feet J.

Om even iets op te kunnen vegen wordt/werd vaak een stoffer en blik gebruikt, ook in de jaren ’50 op de boerderij. Ik heb het blik gemaakt van papier en de stoffer van een restje hout en een cocktailprikker voor het handvat, de haren komen van een oud verfpenseel met zachte haren.

Het was erg veel schuurwerk en haast niet vast te houden, maar het is me gelukt: inclusief gratis manicure ;O!

For sweeping up something you often use(d) a pan and brush, also in the 50s on the farm. I’ve made a dustpan out of paper and the brush is made of a leftover of wood and a cocktail stick for the handle, the hairs come of an old, soft haired painting brush.

It was a lot of sanding work and I nearly couldn’t hold it between my fingers, but I made it till the end: free manicure included ;O!

Het blik is gemaakt van stevig grijs tekenpapier, dat na het maken beschilderd is met zilverkleurige acrylverf en wat donkerbruine zachte pastel voor roestvlekken. De haren van de borstel zijn expres scheef geplakt en onregelmatig afgeknipt om een versleten indruk te geven.

The dust pan is made out of sturdy grey drawing paper, it’s painted with silver colored acrylic paint and I used a bit of dark brown soft pastel for creating rusty stains. The hairs of the brush are deliberatedly, irregular cut off in an oblique angle, for giving it a worn out impression.

Zo, opgeruimd staat netjes ;O!

Een (niet zo kleine) miniatuur rups / A (not so tiny) miniature caterpillar

Vorige week was ik aan het wandelen met mijn kleinzoontje van 15 maanden in de kinderwagen, toen wij onderweg zomaar een donkerharige rups tegenkwamen. Mijn kleinzoontje keek met interesse en verbazing naar dat rupsje, dat vrolijk over de stoep rond hupste. We hebben er samen een tijdje naar gekeken, dat gezichtje van mijn kleinzoontje in volle verbazing was zó leuk om te zien :)!

Een paar dagen voor onze ontmoeting met de rups op de stoep, had ik bij de kringloopwinkel een prentenboek gevonden over een rups, die zich vol eet om daarna in een mooie vlinder te veranderen. Dus thuis gekomen, heb ik het boekje tevoorschijn gehaald en ben ik gaan kijken hoe ik een rups voor dat boek kon gaan maken.

Last week I was walking with my grandson of 15 months old in his pram, when we came across a dark haired caterpillar. My grandson looked with lots of interest and astonishment to this creature, that was cheerfully hopping around on the pavement. Together we’ve looked at it for awhile, the face of my grnadson in full astonishment was so nice to see :)!

Coincidentally a few days before our meeting with the caterpillar, I’ve found in the thriftstore a picture book about a caterpillar, who’s eating lots for than changing into a beautiful buterfly. So, when I came back home, I looked up this book, seeing how I could make a caterpillar for this picture book.

Mijn eerste poging deed ik met een geleende punnikklas, maar de rups had meer weg van een grove gebreide slang dan een rups, nee, dat was niks voor mijn 15 maanden oude hartendiefje!

En wat nu? Dan maar dunne breinaalden (1,5 mm) opgezocht en met dunne katoenen garen kwam er zo waar een rupsje van m'n naaldjes gehupst.

My first attempt was by using a borrowed knitting spool, but the caterpillar looked more as a coarse knitted snake than a caterpillar, no, that wasn’t what I wanted for my 15 month old sweetheart!

Well, what now? I than tried my thin knitting needles (1,5 mm) and after knitting with thin cotton thread a caterpillar hopped of my needles.

Kopje en lijfje zijn los van elkaar gebreid, daarna zijn ze opgevuld met 5 houten kralen in het lijfje en een iets grotere voor het kopje. De kralen in het lijfje zijn met elkaar verbonden, zodat het rupsje zich kronkelend door het boekje kan “eten” ;O.

Head and body are knitted separately, then they are filled up with 5 wooden beads in the body and a slightly larger one for the head. The beads in the body are connected to each other, so that the caterpillar can "eat", whilst meandering itself through the booklet ;O.

Hierna heb ik een gezichtje op het koppie geborduurd met gebruik van naaigaren. Op zijn koppie zijn de voelsprietjes gemaakt van geel katoen garen, waarin knoopjes zijn gelegd. De pootjes zijn gewoon zwarte streepjes geborduurd op het buikje, want het rupsje moet natuurlijk wel ongevaarlijk zijn (in gebruik) voor kleine kinderen!

Het rupsje meet 7 cm in lengte.

After that I embroidered a tiny face on the head, using sewing thread. On his head I made a pair of antennae out of yellow cotton thread, in which I made some knots. The tiny paws are just embroidered black stripes on its belly, because of course this caterpillar must absolutely not be dangerous (in use) for small children!

The caterpillar measures 7 cm in lenght.

Nu is het rupsje klaar om zich tegoed te doen aan allerlei lekkere vruchten in het boek.

Inmiddels ben ik weer begonnen met miniatuur bloemen maken, maar bloemen maken is nu eenmaal behoorlijk tijdrovend, dus duurt het nog eventjes voordat ik hier wat kan laten zien.

Now the caterpillar is ready to indulge in all kinds of tasty fruits in the book.

In the meanwhile I've started making miniature flowers again, but making flowers is quite timeconsuming, so it takes a while before I can show you something here on my blog. 

Hier in Nederland is de herfst in volle gang, inmiddels hebben we eindelijk regen gehad, nog lang niet genoeg in mijn regio, maar toch. De zomer is weg maar geeft als toetje vandaag en morgen mooi zonnig herfstweer, dat wordt wandelschoenen aan en fijn een flinke wandeling maken in de mooie herfstachtige natuur.

Here in the Netherlands the fall is in full swing, we have finally had rain, not nearly enough in my region, but still. Summer is gone but as a dessert today and tomorrow we will have beautiful sunny autumn weather, that means that I'll put on my walking shoes and taking nice long walks in the beautiful autumnal nature.

En er is licht… / And there’s light…

Afgelopen twee weken heb ik beurtelings uitgerust/vakantie gehouden én heb ik mijn werkkamer opgeruimd, wàt een puinhoop was het daar!

Ik heb dus nog niets nieuws gemaakt in miniatuur, maar zoekend in foto’s kwam ik toch nog iets tegen: de verlichting in de wc van mijn miniatuur boerderij.

In the past two weeks I've alternately rested/took days off and I've cleaned up my workroom, because in there was laying quite a mess!

I haven’t made something new in miniature yet, but searching through pictures I came across these ones: the lighting in the loo of my miniature farm. 

In eerste instantie wilde ik twee plastic bolletjes van kerstverlichting ombouwen tot een lamp voor in de wc, maar de doorsnede was veel te groot: in miniatuur was de lamp dan 2 cm!

At first I wanted to convert two plastic balls from Christmas lights into a lamp for the toilet, but the diameter of the miniature lamp became 2 cm!

Zoekend in mijn rommelbak kwam ik de transparante plastic noppen van een grote borstel tegen: ideaal! De vorm was precies die van een oude stallamp uit de jaren 50. In de bol zat al een luchtbel, die heb ik gebruikt om de lamp verder uit te boren, zodat er een lampje in gemaakt kon worden.

Searching in my box filled with all sorts of things, I came across the transparent plastic nubs of a large brush: ideal! The shape was exactly that of an old stable lamp from the 50s. There was already an air bubble in the bulb, which I used to further drill out the lamp, so that a lamp would fit in.

Nadat ik de nop had uitgehold, heb ik de bol in de lengte afgeplakt om het te beschilderen met zilverkleurig nagellak (bruine roestvlekken van bruine nagellak). Dit soort lamp had een ijzeren kap zodat het licht dáár scheen, waar het nodig was.

After I hollowed the plastic nub, I taped off the lamp shade in the length for painting it with silver colored nail polish (rusty spots with brown nailpolish). This sort of lamp had an iron shade so that the light was shining there where needed.

Als stroombuis heb ik een plastic wattenstokje gebruikt, waarvan het afgesneden uiteinde precies in de lampenkap paste. De leiding werd witgeschilderd met witte kalkverf (witkalk) en het uiterste einde werd zwart geschilderd, omdat het in de zwart geschilderde sokkel van de lamp kwam te zitten.

I used a plastic cotton swab as the power tube, cut off the end which therefore fitted exactly into the lampshade. The tube is painted with white lime paint (whitewash) and the extreme end is painted black, because it ended up in the black-painted base of the lamp.

Hierna heb ik het kleine lampje met draad in de stroombuis geschoven, waarna de lampenkap er op kwam. (lampje en klemblokje zijn gekocht bij Sun van Nalladris.com)

Nu is het klaar om aan de muur te bevestigen, maar ik ben nog niet verder gegaan met het afbouwen van de wc, dus dat moet nog gebeuren.

After this I put the small lamp with wire in the power tube, after which the lampshade was placed on it. (light and terminal block are bought from Sun of Nalladris.com)

Now it is ready to be attached to the wall, but I haven't continued to finish the lavatory unit, so that still needs to be done.

Maar ermee spelen kon natuurlijk al wel ;O!!

But playing with the light was already possible, of course ;O!!

Mijn eerste resultaat was echter niet geweldig: véél te fel licht L

Daarom heb ik Sun een e-mailtje gestuurd en zij raadde me aan om het lichtje wat gele nagellak te geven. Aangezien ik de lamp gewoon los kan maken uit de kap kon ik dat doen en dat werkte prima, kijk maar  J!!

However, my first result was not that good: way too much bright light for an old dusty lamp L

That's why I’ve sent an email to Sun and she had some good advice for me: paint the light bulb with just a tiny bit yellow nail polish. Because I could take apart the bulb from the lamp shade, I could do that and it worked perfectly, see here J!!

Gezien van buitenaf door de hor, die voor het raampje zit (tegen de vliegen etc. ;O).

Seen from outside through the screen, which is in front of the window (against flies and so on ;O).

Nu ga ik deze week nog een beetje vakantie houden (want die heb ik afgelopen zomer nog niet gehad), nog meer opruimen en dan hoop ik weer te beginnen met het maken van nieuwe miniaturen.
