Oplichtende herfstkleuren / Glowing autumn colors

Door de droogte in mijn streek van het land liggen er veel verdroogd bladeren van bomen en struiken op de grond: het is echt al herfst aan het worden. Ik vind dit een mooi jaargetijde met al die mooie verkleuringen in de natuur en geniet er erg van. Met de start van de herfst komen er ook weer miniatuurbeurzen in Nederland.

Vorig weekend was er de gezellige miniaturenbeurs in Vaassen.

Daar kwam ik Gerrit van Werven weer tegen met zijn prachtige draaiwerk, van wie ik al verscheidene werkstukken heb gekocht. Hij maakt draaiwerk van o.a. allerlei soorten hout, albast en daar is nu ook acryl draaiwerk bij gekomen.

By the drought in my region of the country there are many withered leaves under the trees and shrubs on the ground: it really is autumn. I like this time of the year with all those wonderful colors in nature en enjoy it very much. Wtih the start of autumn some miniature fairs are coming in The Netherlands. Last weekend there was the cosy miniatures fair in Vaassen.

There I saw Gerrit van Werven again with his wonderful woodturning miniatures, of whom I bought some miniature pieces in wood and alabaster last year. Now he had made some new turning works made of acrylics. 

Hier zie je de lamp met een lichtje erin. Kijk die mooie oranje gloed eens, het lijkt wel vuur! Het draadje kan ook weggewerkt worden in een meubel of zo als de lamp een definitieve plaats krijgt.

Here you see the lamp with a light bulb in it. Look at that nice orange glow, it seems like fire! The wire can be hidden in a piece of furniture when it is placed definitely.

Ik heb 2 acryl vazen, een houten pot en platte schaal van hem gekocht en Gerrit beloofd om eens wat werk van hem te tonen op mijn blog en heb er wat zelf gemaakte bloemen in gezet, ik hoop dat hij het mooi vindt.

I bought 2 acrylic vases, a wooden pot and flat dish of him and I promised Gerrit to show some of his work on my blog. I put some self made flowers in the vases and self made fruit on the fruit bowl, I hope he likes it.

De oranje vaas is tevens te gebruiken als lamp! Gerrit, wat een vondst: nu heb ik een lamp én een vaas in één :D!! Ik vond het ook wel leuk om de brandende  lamp met mijn nieuwe chrysanthen met eikenbladeren erin te laten zien, maar niet nadat ik de brandweer stand by had ingeroepen ;)! 

Dát is natuurlijk niet de bedoeling van dit kunstwerk in verband met brandgevaar, maar ik vond dit effect té mooi om het niet aan jullie te laten zien ;)!!

The orange vase can also be used as a lamp! Gerrit, what a find: now I have a lamp ánd a vase in one: D! I thought it would be nice to show the burning lamp together with my new chrysanthemums with oak leaves in it, but I didn’t do that after I called the fire brigade to be standby ;)! 

Because there is a danger of fire and that is not the intention of this piece of art, but I found this effect too nice for not to show to you all ;)!

Met een vlindernetje heb ik de laatste vlindertjes van deze zomer gevangen en…….weer vrijgelaten natuurlijk ;!

Vliegenzwammen / Fly agarics

De metereologische zomer is afgelopen, de herfst is van start gegaan, ondanks het mooie zomerweer van de afgelopen week. Lopend door bos en veld heb ik al diverse paddenstoelen gezien. Ook de vliegenzwammen, onderaan de stam van wat berken hier in de buurt; ieder jaar staan ze daar weer.

The meteorological summer is over, autumn has started, despite the beautiful summer weather of the past week. Walking through woods and fields, I have seen various mushrooms. The fly agarics, down the trunk of a couple of birches around here; every year they are there again.

De vliegenzwam komt in de lage landen algemeen voor. Het eten ervan kan leiden tot vergiftigingsverschijnselen, maar de ernst hiervan valt meestal mee.

Vliegenzwammen groeien vaak in nauwe associatie (symbiose) met berk, tamme kastanje, eik, den, beuk en spar. 

The fly agarics are common in the low lands. Eating it can cause poisoning, but mostly it’s not severe. Fly agarics grow often in close association (symbiosis) with birch, chestnut, oak, pine, beech and fir.

De bekendste verschijningsvorm van de vliegenzwam is een donkerrode hoed met witte stippen. De witte stippen zijn restanten van het algeheel omhulsel, waarin de paddenstoel 'opgesloten' zat, voordat hij uit de grond omhoog kwam. Deze spoelen bij regenachtig weer vrij snel van de hoed. De kleur van de hoed is echter variabel en kan variëren van rood tot oranje met gele tinten. De hoed wordt 5-15 cm breed. Het vlees, de plaatjes en sporen  zijn wit. Op de witte steel zit meestal een duidelijke ring en aan de onderkant een (vlokkige) beurs. Vliegenzwammen kunnen voorkomen vanaf juli tot en met de late herfst, met een hoogtepunt rond eind augustus.

The most famous appearance of the fly agaric is a dark red hat with white dots. The white dots are remnants of the overall shell, in which the mushroom 'trapped' was, before he came up out of the ground. These dots coils during rainy weather fairly quickly from the hat. The color of the hat is variable and can range from red to orange with yellow shades. The cap is 5-15 cm wide. The meat, the plates and spores are white. On the white stem is usually a clear ring and the bottom a (flaky) wallet. Flying agarics can occur from July to late autumn, with a peak around the end of August.

Bezige bijen en honing / Busy bees and honey

Ik ben met een “geheim” karwei bezig, waardoor ik op een zijspoor belandde (wie van ons is dat nooit ;)!). Ineens kwam ik namelijk op het idee om een oude verweerde bijenkast te maken. Op het internet heb ik wat foto's van de binnenkant van zo’n bijenkast gevonden.

Bijen zijn altijd druk met verschillende taken binnen hun groep, oftewel bijenvolk, waartoe ze behoren. Ze halen de nectar in hun omgeving uit de bloeiende planten/bloemen en brengen dat naar hun bijenkorf of –kast. 

 I am busy with a “secret” job, whereby I was sidetracked (whoever isn't ;)!?). Suddenly I got the idea to make an old weathered bee hive, well, it is not exactly a hive, but a kind of cabinet(?) for bees (can someone tell me the correct word for it in English?). On the internet I found some pictures of the inside of this kind of “cabinet”.

Bees are always busy with various tasks within their group (this is called a bees folk), to which they belong. They collect the nectar in their environment from the flowering plants/flowers and bring it to their bee hive or cabinet. 

Onderin op het aanvliegplankje kruipen de bijen via twee kleine pleetjes in de bijenkast (zie de rode cirkeltjes). Op het loden dakje zitten korstmossen.

At the bottom is a shelf for the bees to land on and with two little holes (in the red circles). The bees are crawling inside the cabinet through these holes. On the lead roof are some lichens.

Om de honingraten uit de kast te kunnen halen, blaast de imker wat rook (met een speciaal apparaat) in de kast om de bijen te bedaren en de kast open te kunnen maken. Daarna kan hij de honing van de raten halen.   

To take the honeycombs out of the bee hive, the beekeeper blows some smoke (with a kind of bellows) into the hive, to calm the bees and to open the hive. After that he calmly collects the honey of the honeycombs.  

Deze imker heeft zijn favoriete boek mee naar buiten genomen, hij heeft er honing/-vlekken op geknoeid ;)! Honing is er in vele soorten, het is gezond (ook voor beren ;)) en ik vind ze allemaal lekker!

Afval nooit weggooien! / Never throw away your trash!

Tijdens de hitte van vorig weekend  heb ik binnenshuis met wat DAS-klei zitten prutsen en daarna buiten in de hete zon “gebakken”. Het droogde binnen het uur, ja dat wel, maar alles was door de ontzettende hitte ook scheef getrokken en brokkelig/bros. Over “even vlug in de zon bakken” gesproken, dus in de prullenbak ermee L!!  

Ik ben momenteel met veel werk bezig; ik werk altijd aan 3-4 uiterst verschillende dingen tegelijk, dat vind ik afwisselend en leuk om te doen ;)!

Vandaag was het slecht weer, ik kon dus niet naar buiten en dat was reden voor mij om mijn werktafel (een beetje) op te ruimen. Toen kwam ik in de kleine prullenbak de misbaksels van de klei (sorry, vergeten foto's te maken vooraf) weer tegen en heb ik geprobeerd er nog wat van te maken. Na een eerste poging kreeg ik de smaak te pakken: er kwamen zowaar nog een paar miniaturen tevoorschijn :D!

During the heat of last weekend I’ve been working  with DAS-clay  and I’ve “baked” the results outside in the heat of the sun. It dried within an hour, yes of course, but everything was brittle and warped by the enormous heat. Speaking about “a quick bake in the sun”, so I threw it in my trash can L!

At the moment I am busy with a lot of work;  I always work on 3-4 different things at the same time, I like the variegation and it is fun to do ;)!

Today the weather was rainy, so I couldn’t go outside and it was the reason for me to clean up (a little) my worktable. In my little trash can I found back the wasters of the clay (I've forgotten to make a picture before the change, I thought it would be nothing) and I’ve tried to make something out of it. After a first attempt I got the hang of it: there appeared a few miniatures :D!

We hebben bijna geen zomer gehad… / We nearly had no summer…

……..en nu is er de ongewone hitte van 35 oC dit weekend !! De weermannen hebben de zomer in hun bol óf ze lijken wel gek geworden!! Door mijn gezondheid kan ik slecht tegen deze hitte, dus zit ik binnen en laten we dan maar wat miniaturen maken ;)

Omdat er nu zoveel mensen buiten zitten te genieten van het weer, dacht ik aan mijn miniatuur "rotan" tuinsetje dat ik vorig jaar gewickerd heb. Vele jaren geleden heb ik ook een echt werkende parasol gemaakt.  Ik heb dus de parasol en meubeltjes buiten in de tuin gezet om ze te fotograferen en aan jullie te kunnen laten zien.

 ….and now there is the uncommon heat of 35 oC this weekend! The men of the weather forecast have summer in their heads ór they are going crazy!! Due to my health I can not stand this heat, so I am inside and make some miniatures ;)

Because there are so many people outside enjoying the weather, I thought of my miniature set of garden furniture, I have wickered it last year. Many years ago I also made a real working parasol. I’ve put the parasol and the furniture outside in my garden to take some pictures and to show them to you.

Nu ga ik gauw weer naar binnen, want anders “smelt” alles en dan heb ik het nog niet eens over het echt Italiaanse ijs/gelato Italiano, dat op mij staat te wachten: mmmmmm, heerlijk  :D!! Zien jullie de naam van onze Italiaanse ijsman? Zelfs daar zit iets van “mini” in ;)!

I have to go inside now, otherwise everything “melts” and then I am not talking about the real Italian gelato/ice cream, which is waiting for me, ready to eat: yummy, I LOVE it :D! Do you see the name of our ice cream shop? Even in there is something of “mini”  ;)!

Ineens zie ik dat ik meer dan 200 volgers van mijn blog heb gekregen: een warm welkom met een koud Italiaans ijsje ;) en bedankt voor jullie belangstelling en reacties!

Ik heb haar op een zwarte porseleinen houder voor eetstokjes gelegd, zo komt ze mooier uit qua kleur. 

Ik heb echter wel één probleem………..”Grandi” is een beetje te klein geworden ;D!!

Eén zwaluw maakt nog geen zomer… / One swallow does not make summer….

…..is een Hollands gezegde. Tijdens mijn wandelingen door bos- en weidegebied zie ik veel boerenzwaluwen bij de boeren de schuren in en uitvliegen. De eerste jongen zijn al uitgevlogen, maar de zwaluwen hebben al wéér jongen, waarvoor ze druk insecten vangen in volle vlucht. Ze vliegen scherend met een piepend geluid op volle snelheid door de lucht: spectaculair om te zien!! Omdat de zomer dit jaar ons een beetje in de steek laat, dacht ik: kom, ik maak gewoon wat meer zwaluwen van Fimo klei, misschien komt de zomer dan toch nog wel :D!!

 …..is a Dutch saying. During my walks through the forests and meadows I see many barn swallows at the farmer’s barns flying in and out. The first young swallows have been hatched, but the swallows have again young birds, for which they are busy catching insects in flight. They fly with a beeping sound at full speed through the air: it is a spectacular to see!! The summer does not come this year, so I thought: I make some swallows of Fimo clay, perhaps then the summer will come to us :D!

Een echte zwaluw meet ongeveer 20 cm groot van snavel tot en met de gevorkte staart. Omgerekend in miniatuur kom je op ongeveer 16-17 mm uit. Ik heb een paar volwassen exemplaren van die grootte gemaakt, die aan de nesten hangen om de jongen te voederen. En ik heb een aantal jongen op een draad gemaakt, die ongeveer 11 mm groot zijn.

Onder een kapotte golfplaat, dat onder aan een pannendak is bevestigd, zie je dat ze hun nesten bij elkaar hebben gebouwd. Ze leven graag in groepen en houden van hun buren ;)!!

A real  swallow measures about 20 cm from the beak to the forked tail. Converted in miniature scale it is about 16-17 mm. I made some adult specimens of that size, which are hanging on the nests to feed the young swallows. And I made some younger specimens on a wire, which measure about 11 mm.

Under a broken corrugated iron, which is attached under the tile roof, you see they’ve built their nests together. They live in groups and love their neighbors ;)!
