Dozen / Boxes

Because in the beginning of December here, especially for Dutch families with young children, all attention goes to the feast of Sinterklaas (to my foreign readers: this is sort of Santa Claus feast), so it is often after than that our thoughts are heading to the Adventtime and finally Christmas!!
Yesterday afternoon we had a cheerful, very cosy feast of Sinterklaas, for the first time together with our grandson, who had the best day of his life, he is seriously spoiled ;O! This cheerful, little boy was stealing the show with his curiosity, it was so very adorable to see and therefore we enormously enjoyed of this feast, especially this grandma…
What was left behind, after so much fun, were nice memories, paper and empty boxes, hehehe ;).

That reminded me of the large box that Birgit had sent us. I was allowed to open two gifts on Sinterklaas Day, or better said: at the German day of the feast of Sankt Niklaus, the 6th of December.
In these boxes were a 'sturdy' chocolate Santa Claus, yummy, and a tiny, beautiful Christmas scene, selfmade by my dear blog friend, Birgit (blog: https://biwubaer.blogspot.com/ ).
Dearest Birgit, thank you once again for your thoughtful, wonderful gifts, I’m so happy with all of it.

And because we’re already have passed the second Sunday of Advent (OMG, time flies :O!!), I was allowed to open up another gift of Birgit. In it was, to my biggest surprise, a cute snowman on his sleigh…..read the text on the attached note…..that’s soooo Birgit ;O!
Dear Birgit, thank you so much for your generous gift. This snowman also found a nice spot: he is now next to our received Christmas cards on my cabinet, so I can see him every day and can enjoy his cheerfulnes. I’m going to keep this treasure for when my grandson is older and he comes to his grandma to celebrate Christmas.

Regarding to boxes: in miniature I'm finally busy making something again. This is probably recognizable for all creative minds among us, bloggers: because of all the commotion in our family my head was full of all kinds of worries/thoughts and then as always, nothing comes out of my hands (no making of miniatures).

Deze kerstbal is 6 mm in diameter / This Christmas bauble is 6 mm in diameter

Meanwhile I’ve started making miniature Christmas decoration. The boxes are already finished, the large ones measures 25 x 25 mm, the small square box size is 10 x 10 mm. What will go into the boxes, has to be finished yet, but here is a little sneak peek: a tiny Christmas bauble. More to follow soon…
Thank you for your kind comments, have a nice week!

Hij zal toch wel komen…?? / Will he come…??

If you go to work early in the morning and coming outside you unexpectidly see a huge box, tucked away right behind your car, what do you think ...? Eh, (considering the time of year) maybe Saint Nicholas has been here?
Asking our neighbors yielded nothing, but since there was fortunately a sender on the package, the mystery was quite quickly resolved. It came from Birgit, and as I assumed, with the parcel/postal services? But still, what does a package do suddenly right behind our car, why didn't someone rang at the door..? Were they it, who would have been here around... Saint Nicholas with his helpers?
Ah well, we'll never know, so okay, so we took the huge box indoors.

As said, the package came from our dear blog friend, Birgit, (see her blog: https://biwubaer.blogspot.com ), that was soon clear after I opened it. First of all there was a beautiful homemade card with lovely wishes, so sweet! This year Birgit had very thoughtfully added an extra letter for elder grandmas * grin * with …… a checklist, hahahaha, that's so Birgit :D! That was because of the fact that this old granny often forgets something, she doesn't search through all seams in the entire package. And because of this, she once got into 'trouble' with unpacking (read: finding) Birgit's Christmas presents before, and that's why Birgit solved it that way, hehehe, I so LOVE this sort of joking ;O !!

But after removing some wrapping paper and plastic, my mouth fell open: dear heavens, there was sooo much: Oh?!! And according t my checklist for grannies, Birgit had even thought of my little rascal/grandson/most beloved miniature, because even for him there is a package of Saint Nicholas in the box (red paper). Oh, oh, how sweet that is, I was and am still completely overwhelmed and very moved by this all!

Speaking about my grandson, I have big news: he can walk now, and even fast too :O!!! It’s done with our rest now, but it’s also a big step in his physical development, and we are so happy with it!! So, recently he got his first shoes from this grandma. And this is exactly in time: now he can put his shoe next to the stove/central heating while Saint Nicholas is here in The Netherlands :D! But because everyone here is at work today, we will celebrate the feast of Saint Nicholas this upcoming weekend. It will be so nice and cozy again, now we have this cheerful, little boy in our family (although he won’t understand anything of what will happen ;O).

So, last Sunday it was the first Sunday of Advent, according tot he checklist of Birgit I was allowed to open up a parcel. In it were two wonderful BiWuBear Advent Calendars, one for me and one for my grandson and his parents, oh, how very thoughtful. But there was also a beautiful card with an envelope, at least it seemed so. It appears to be a handcut artwork, a silhouette mini Advent Lantern, thereon were several images of winter and the Advent time. In between these images I even found Saint Nicholas, it’s a beautiful piece of work, and together with a light chain it is showing off now in our livingroom.
Dearest Birgit, thank you again for these thoughtful, beautiful Advent gifts, we’re all very happy with them!

Pictures are taken by a mobile phone and using the ‘vintage’ button, so very of the 50s ;)!

Due to several reasons, this year I wasn’t able to make something in time for the feast of Saint Nicholas in miniature, but I still managed putting together a little Saint Nicholas scene in miniature. In grandma’s farm kitchen the stove has been poked quite hard, and Little Me, has with help of grandma, put a big carrot in her wooden shoe and set up a bucket of water for the horse (of Saint Nicholas), and now: they are singing out loud songs for Saint Nicholas, so that he can hear it! Will he come….??
Thank you for your kind comments/wishes, for those who celebrate: have a nice and cosy feast of Saint Nicholas!

Bam bam bam… / Chop chop chop…

…yesterday we have heard the whole day the noise of an ax on the farmyard of grandpa, and this morning he continued. The stock of firewood had to be replenished before the winter comes.

He works with a large ax through a large pile of wood, stacks it neatly on the wheelbarrow and then stores it dry in his traditional farm shed.

Both axes were purchased years ago, of Puppenwelt Wengen during a miniatures show, the stems are beautifully designed and the iron of the axes is really sharp.

I bought the wood at a drugstore, it is fairly hard and has a nice fine fiber. I don’t know what sort of wood it is, but it’s perfect for 1:12 firewood. It was intended as material for natural Christmas decoration, well, in a way it is now, but probably not as it was meant to be ;O.

With a specific red handkerchief, often used by farmers, he wipes off his sweat of his forehead, hangs out his cap to dry, and straightened his aching back. At the same time, he looks over the meadows for a "noaber" (Dutch dialect word for neighbor in the countryside), where he sees some "commotion" (movement) in the farmyard.
People, who here live in the countryside still do social control so that they feel safe there. This is still happening here, in my region.

During his break, Grandpa also carefully checked whether the hedgehog basket was still 'inhabited', and yesss, in it there was a hedgehog, to do its hibernation (this (hibernation) basket for hedgehogs was made by me years ago). A few weeks ago, Grandpa had already put some branches and dry leaves over it, so that it was a warm welcome for any eventual hedgehog, who wanted to do a hibernation in there.
Probably this hedgehog wasn't bothered by the sound of the heavy chopping of the ax ;O.

After a last look at the 'noaber' (neighbor) to see everything was allright over there, grandpa puts on his cap again, rubs his aching spine for a little while and continues to pile up logs on the wheelbarrow ... he knows: grandma is waiting inside with warm coffee :).

Last week it finally rained heavily here, in my region, because there is still a rainfall deficit of many milliliters. Almost no grass is growing, for this reason the cows are still walking outside, which is quite late for this season and the farmers have sown grass on almost every parcel that became free after harvesting. So that they will not be without grass again for their cattle next spring.
Due to family cicumstances I still haven’t made new miniatures to show you here. Therefore I show you some smaller things of my miniature farm (under construction) on my blog.
Thank you for your kind comments, for who celebrates: Happy Thanksgiving, have a nice weekend everyone!

Every building needs crossbeams, otherwise it collapses, so my miniature farm also needs crossbeams. And because in the stable area of my grandparents' farm these oak wooden crossbeams were partly visible, I decided to make them also in miniature.
I also want to build this miniature farm more or less in the traditional way that was used here (more than 100 years ago) in the east of the Netherlands, so some research was needed.
Last summer I saw during a bike ride that somewhere in my region an old farmhouse was half pulled down with the intention to rebuild it on the old, traditional way. The meters high ribs/crossbeams of the small farm were "set aside" for a while in a meadow nearby. Unfortunately it was still a bit too far from the road to be able to take a good picture, but if you look closely, you can still see them in the photo (red arrow).

In the past, these big crossbeams were made out of preselected (oak)wood by a carpenter on the building site and, when the time came, they were pushed/lifted in place with a number of extremely strong, muscular men, see photos.

I started with a beam of balsa wood, 3x3 cm, and I edited with a hobby knife so it seems to be like an old oak wooden beam. It seems a quick job, but it was not, allthough it was nice to do the “chopping” work ;O.

Before I started chopping, I firstly checked if I could use my acrylic paint for getting the desired effect of oak wood, but that was no problem.

After chopping, I started applying thin, very watery layers of acrylic paint, first in yellow ocher towards an increasingly more dark brown shade. I paid good attention to filling in the holes at the bottom of the beam with diluted paint, because those holes remain visible after construction!

Then it was time to build/construct a so-called "poer" (it’s a sort of masoned base, but I don’t know the English word for this), on which the heavy oak beam will be placed. To prevent the beam from sinking into the ground, or will get rotting in the ground, it was set on a masoned brick base.

With a hobby knife I'd cut a small piece of 3x3 cm out of the floor of the cow stable, hereon the big beam will be placed. After than I took a thin small piece of card board, of 3x3 cm, for building the base with miniature bricks (bought of Ashtown, kerstwebshop.nl). Also, because I assume that the cardboard will better stick than the bricks....

The bricks were laid down in a special pattern and to lay them, I used a grey colored filler (DIY), mixed with glue and light grey colored chalkpaint.

I’ve ever got an old tool of my dentist and I thought it would work very neat during the build of the bricks, but it didn’t. Because in the real cow stable also was visible one base with lots of cement, I left it like that in first instance.

But I had to do something to make this base, so I made a mess during filling in all those tiny gaps and than the base looked like this.

Finally I had to make a so-called 'cushion' (made of oakwood) that was placed on top of the masoned base, to prevent the moisture from pulling out of the damp stones in the oak beam.

Meanwhile I thought out how I could cleaned again the dirty base again: using my Dremel ;). After that the base looked like this, way better than I dreamed of!

Even kijken of het past…
Let’s see if it fits…

Ja, past precies, mooi, weer iets klaar nu!

Yes, it fits perfectly, good, another thing is now ready!
Thank you for your kind comments, have a very nice weekend!
