Het puttertje van Carel Fabritius… / The Goldfinch by Carel Fabritius…

…goes with me to the DHN-miniatures fair this coming weekend. I tried to make a 3D version of this small painting AND in miniature (1:12 scale). For more information about the painting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Goldfinch_(painting) and here about the painter: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carel_Fabritius
I thought it would be nice to do, but it was a difficult challenge. Last weekend I was able to finish it yet, so it will go with me to the miniature fair. What do you think, will it do ;)??

For transporting this tiny, vulnerable 3D work I've made a tiny protecting, wooden box, whereon the frame fits. There is no glass in front of the tiny bird, it's just for protection during the transport!

I’ll try to finish more things, so when I can I’ll show more miniature work (what will go with me to the show) on my blog the rest of this week.
I hope I'll succeed, so this was it for now!
Thank you for your kind comments, wishing you a nice week!

Beestje / Bug

About two weeks ago I ran up against two sorts of bugs: this beautiful caterpillar crawled on the midst of the tarmac, just before I passed him with my bike (for more information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calliteara_pudibunda AND an other bug……..the flu! Well, this was not quite what I had in mind because there’s a miniatures show, in less than two weeks from now, but you can't do anything about it, than just trying to get better in time. Now I have to get rid of the nasty cough, because making miniatures and a cough are not a good combination, isnt it ;)?!

For those, who are intending to buy a miniature from me, I want to be clear about the selling of my miniatures. For the coming miniature show (29-30 of October) I've made more/new miniatures and I only sell them on the miniature DHN-show itself. So, this means that I won’t sell before the show, nor reserving anything, I’m sorry, but in April it was quite a mess because of this. Otherwise there will be nothing left to display during the show, isn’t it ;)?
I hope for your understanding!!
If you would like to know if a particular miniature isn't sold, you can e-mail me after the show.

(...and as you can see this flower of the hydrangea is also not finished yet...)

Just before I got sick, I have done a little bit, so this afternoon I've quickly made some pictures for this post. I hope to get better soon again for finishing yet some more miniatures for the show. This means for now no blogging for me, but doing/finishing more miniature work;).
Thanks for your comments, wishing you all nice week!

Nog een kastje / An other cabinet

A month ago, during our daytrips with family, we also visited the old town named Hindeloopen in the region Friesland, it's in the North of The Netherlands. We visited there the First Museum for Skates. This museum has a large collection of ice skates and it certainly is a visit worth, because they also have a department with objects painted by the traditional painting art, wherefore Hindeloopen is famous. To my surprise they also sold miniature furniture, which were painted with this traditional painting technique. It's also possible that you send your own miniature to the artists, for letting them paint it in this traditional way!
Here is the link to this museum: www.schaatsmuseum.nl

In this museum I bought a special cabinet for my help in the household, Sientje, do you remember? Because it has been a while ago since I've blogged about her, is here the link to refresh your memory: http://minimumloon.blogspot.nl/2014/05/mislukking-failure.html
After Sientje came to live into my canal house, she didn’t get a cabinet for herself, but now her employer managed to get a cabinet for maids from Hindeloopen, because Sientje has family there ;)!
In the 17th century Hindeloopen had intensive trade relations with the city of Amsterdam, this way I've related this Frisian maids cabinet to my canal house of Amsterdam in miniature.

It’s a green maids cabinet, the wife of the owner of the museum told me that this green color was also used around 1900 in the traditional Hindelooper painting art. Because this green color suits best with my ‘bedstee’ (a place to sleep in former times), I chose for this cabinet for Sientje.

She has to share this cabinet with the maid, Marie, this was quite common in former times ;)!

On the above pictures you can see this cabinet a bit better, sorry for the bad quality of the pictures, but at this moment the daylight is not very good.

The cabinet is also signed by the painter...

.....here you can see it better. It’s wonderfully hidden along the painted floral motifs.

Here's finally arrived autumn, I LOVE it :D !! Now I absolutely have to find more time for creating miniatures, because I still haven't done much in miniature, due to all sorts of reasons.....
Thanks for your nice comments, wishing you all a very nice weekend :D!

Nederlands broodkastje uit de 17e eeuwse keuken / Dutch bread cabinet from the 17th century kitchen

A while back I bought a kit from a 17th century Dutch bread cabinet Arjen Spinhoven, website: http://arjenspinhoven.nl/ and now I've put together. There's included a clear manual, but I quickly made one fault ;). Whoever put such a cabinet together, will be able to notice my mistake. But I won't say where it went wrong, so...it's a sort of picture puzzle: D!

In the manual it was recommended to firstly paint the cabinet (made of MDF) and then to assemble together the parts ofthe cabinet, so I've also done this job that way. But after painting a layer of light brown color acrylic I thought that the cabinet didn't really look like it was made of wood. After some thinking I decided to paint it using a certain painting technique, which changes cheap wood into a richer sort of wood (like pinewood changing into oak), it was often used in former times.

Here you can see very well the difference: at the left side the part is only painted and at the right side I’ve painted with a bit darker brown color of acrylic paint and using a toothpick for scratching in a wood grain, while the paint was still wet.

It was a time consuming, painstaking job, but I think the result was worth it.

On the Internet I found a picture of this bread cabinet and it served to me as a model for painting the cabinet.

Finally I put in a few pieces of bread (made of clay), because that was the goal of making this cabinet, isn’t it ;?

Sorry for the blurry pictures, I had to be quick ;)

On one of my walkings I met a baby hedgehog, it was sitting alone in the midst of the footpath. I’ve gently leaded it to the shelter of greenery. During this very, very dry year lots of hedgehogs are suffering very much, there's no water in nature to be found for them!
Thank you for your nice comments, wishing you all a nice week(end) :)!

Accessoires voor een 17e eeuws stilleven / Accessories for a 17th century still life

In between the making of flowers I’ve made something else in miniature: all kinds of fruit, bread, cheese (made of Fimo clay) and a gestreepte tulip (made of floral wire and silk paper).

The ceramic plate was made by Elisabeth Causeret and the plate on the right is self made of Fimo clay and it has a printed image at the upper side.

I’ll try to make a suitable background for these miniatures, I hope it will be ready for the DHN-show at the end of October.
Thank you for your kind comments, have a nice weekend :)!

Houten klompen / Wooden shoes

In early September my family wanted a bit more of my attention ;) so we have made some day trips. Among other things to the Frisian wooden clogs museum: http://www.klompen.frl/welkom/ . It was a very interesting museum, where I learned a lot of new things about the making of wooden shoes. It seems that in ancient times wooden shoes were worn by many people around the whole world (see the above picture).
When I came back home, after this visit, I got inspiration again to make something other than flowers in miniature: a pair of wooden shoes ;).

In the above pictures you see some steps in the making of the clogs.

Here you can see that the clogs on the inside are hollowed, even till into the toe, for a well fit of the foot.

It wasn’t so easy to make an equal pair of clogs, a left and right clog, out of limewood. It took a lot of time for hollowing them out and for sanding till the desired thickness, but I’m quite satisfied with the result :)!

This pair of miniature clogs will go into my miniature farm, or at the feet of my miniature Grandma, or Grandpa. My grandfather wore these wooden clogs too and if my grandmother was working on chores with water, like cleaning the windows, she always wore wooden clogs ;).

And I always wear this pair of clogs if I work in my garden...and yes, I "live in (grand) style" ;)!

Now it seems that the extreme heat we’ve got here in The Netherlands (it's very extraordinary for us in September!!) will come to an end, I hope to be back soon in making new miniatures, because it will be soon the end of October and we have the next DHN-show in Ulft: time flies :D!
Thank you for your comments, have a nice weekend :D!

Hybride rozen / Hybrid roses

I already showed my new miniature hybrid roses on my Facebook, but I was forgotten to show them here on my blog, sorry….
Here, at the outer eastside from The Netherlands, we still suffer of hot temperatures, fortunately it appears to become a bit cooler (just for tomorrow), well, we’ll see. So, what else can we do than stay inside and showing some more pictures of my new miniatures on my blog :D!!

Glass vase is made by Leo Reinders, sorry, no website.

Thank you for your kind comments, I wish you all a nice week and enjoy your summer, wherever you are :)!
