Nederlands broodkastje uit de 17e eeuwse keuken / Dutch bread cabinet from the 17th century kitchen

A while back I bought a kit from a 17th century Dutch bread cabinet Arjen Spinhoven, website: http://arjenspinhoven.nl/ and now I've put together. There's included a clear manual, but I quickly made one fault ;). Whoever put such a cabinet together, will be able to notice my mistake. But I won't say where it went wrong, so...it's a sort of picture puzzle: D!

In the manual it was recommended to firstly paint the cabinet (made of MDF) and then to assemble together the parts ofthe cabinet, so I've also done this job that way. But after painting a layer of light brown color acrylic I thought that the cabinet didn't really look like it was made of wood. After some thinking I decided to paint it using a certain painting technique, which changes cheap wood into a richer sort of wood (like pinewood changing into oak), it was often used in former times.

Here you can see very well the difference: at the left side the part is only painted and at the right side I’ve painted with a bit darker brown color of acrylic paint and using a toothpick for scratching in a wood grain, while the paint was still wet.

It was a time consuming, painstaking job, but I think the result was worth it.

On the Internet I found a picture of this bread cabinet and it served to me as a model for painting the cabinet.

Finally I put in a few pieces of bread (made of clay), because that was the goal of making this cabinet, isn’t it ;?

Sorry for the blurry pictures, I had to be quick ;)

On one of my walkings I met a baby hedgehog, it was sitting alone in the midst of the footpath. I’ve gently leaded it to the shelter of greenery. During this very, very dry year lots of hedgehogs are suffering very much, there's no water in nature to be found for them!
Thank you for your nice comments, wishing you all a nice week(end) :)!

Dear Ilona, your cabinet is gorgeous! The addition of the "graining" technique with the paint is perfect! It truly does make a difference in the realism! I could not spot any error, so I am convinced you have imagined it! lOL! It is a beautiful piece of furniture either way!
And the thirsty hedgehog is so adorable.... I would fill a birdbath with water on the ground for them! I am sad to hear you are having a drought too. We are very dry over here, we are lacking more than ten inches of rain so far this year, and last winter was the driest in many many years. We are hoping for some rain soon, but it is not going to be very much. Many farmers have lost their crops this summer.:(
I hope for better weather to come!

Your bread cabinet is stunning. You did a wonderful job about the wood painting.
Poor little hedgehog. It's sad about the dry season. Feeding on the moist leafs is good for them.

Hugs, Drora

Are you sure there is a mistake??? It looks fine and absolutely as it is supposed to look according to me! ;O) You've done a fantastic job in coloring it - the wood structure looks awesome. Oh, and congrats on getting your finger so very fast to the camera knob - what lovely pictures of this little hedgie. I'm glad that the couple you gave me is much more cooperative when it comes to taking pictures! *smile*

You did a wonderful job of the cabinet IIona. It looks beautiful =0) I've noticed a few young hedgehogs out during daylight hours, which isn't good. I have been putting sachets of cat food out for them, to help them through the Summer.

Hallo Ilona,
