Mislukking? / Failure?

I think it must be 10 years ago that I baked a few loose parts of miniature dolls, made out of Fimo clay. I had stored them in an old sock somewhere in a drawer and I nearly forgot them.
But a few weeks ago I found them back and I’ve decided to make a new doll from one set of parts for the staff in my canal house.

These were the parts, which I have used for my new doll.
On the picture she seems to miss a hand, but there are two of them, look at the picture below....

For making (1:12 scale) miniature dolls I use the fantastic book of James Carrington. I have shown you this book in previous blog posts. Out of this book I have copied a drawn scheme for the exact proportions for dolls on different ages. Behind the new doll you can see this scheme. Here, on the picture above, are the parts of the doll connected with iron wire, which is coated with cotton wool and it is then coated with skin colored cotton thread (for crocheting). These things are all mentioned in the book, which is very helpful for making your own miniature dolls.

According the instructions of this book, I paint a thick layer of make-up for actors on the face and the hands/arms of the doll and after that I removed the excess with a damp cloth. This is necessary to show the facial features of a doll more clearer. At that moment I saw that her small face was already failed during the sculpting fase. But that was also the reason for me to create her own life story, but I will tell you that in another blog post ;)!

Now her face is painted, you can clearly see that she is not a natural beauty ;).

For every doll, I make myself, I sew matching clothes and I don’t use a particular pattern, I simply cut the fabric, I apply it on the doll and I’ve sewn a dress for her. I didn’t use glue for the seams or something else.

She also got an apron of me, which she will need for her work in the household.

The dark brown paint on her legs are suppose to be her stockings. The slippers are made of thin pieces of leather and they also got a much used look. Moreover, they are many sizes too big ....so they are purchased on the growth;)!

I used orange red mohair for her hairdo, because this hair color did seem to me a good choice for this doll with her 'failed' face ..... First you stick a piece of Scotch tape on a piece of wood and with Tacky you glue thereon a few tufts of hair, then you glue the tufts of hair on the head of the doll in any hairdo you wish.

So, this is also the solution of the riddle of a few blogs ago, on which I got such nice answers of you all :D!!

With her new hairdo she looks like this. If you look well: she has a large scar in her small face….

Take off your slippers and hop, on the scales ........ well, she does not weigh much, just 21 grams and she is 13 cm in height!

I will tell more about her in an other blog post.
Thank you all for your comments regarding any color of the ‘bedstee’/’cupboard’ cabinet), I am busy with it :D!
I wish you all a nice week!

Awww, poor thing. She's had a hard life already. Stuck in a sock drawer and a scar on her face. I hope you give her a good home and don't work her too hard =0)

You have brought her to life in more ways than one. Your story makes her seem so real. Lovely doll.

Dear Ilona, you've done great work! your doll is fantastic even with some slight imperfection! in this way she is more characteristic and has her own story and I wait for the continuation!!!

Hi Ilona! Thank you for showing the steps you use to make the doll! I am still learning how to do the bodies and had not thought of covering the cotton batting with wrapped thread! This doll is so "real" that she has already told you her story! I think it is wonderful that you are making her "whole" not just throwing away the parts because of her imperfection! It is like real life... we are not all ideal sizes and shapes! (This is why I started to make my dolls with "old" people... so the wrinkles are expected! LOL!) As usual her costume is beautifully made! You are a great seamstress!

Ah Ilona, the poor wee thing.. she's really lovely in her imperfections :) You are a very talented lady. You make it all seem so easy, thank you.
All the best,
Vivian

Interesting story about her creation. Her face has a lot of character, and I look forward to hearing how she got that scar, poor thing. The clothes you made for her all delicate and lovely. xo Jennifer

Besos.

The Old Maid zei

She looks so real so she doesn't have to be a beauty. But I think she is! Who said everyone must look like MM or any beauty queen? ;)
I have this book too but I don't dare to try making dolls, lol! I did try once and my attempts comparing to your doll are hard to say dolls at all, lol! So I admire you for creating her, for sewing all clothes - which you know I am gluing - and for making her hair like James does!
Can't wait to read her story! I am sure it will be an interesting one!

Terrific job. I am glad you used the parts you have because she has so much character! Her costume is absolutely lovely and you did a terrific job on the hair.
Well done!

I can hardly wait to hear her story - ten years in pieces in a sock... that already hints she had a hard life. ;O) But without anymore joking - you've outdone yourself once more and brought this doll to life.. having a background, a story to tell and a personality. The way you've adapted the methods shown in this book is amazing... and the way you've dressed her is breathtaking. Wonderful as always!

Thanks for visiting Iona. I love your doll. I too went to the Carrington book for my dolls and I have that same sheet showing height for dolls. We do the same research, lol... Her face is wonderful. I hope I can make better faces with time. Good job with yours. I will visit during the summer. LJ

Aha! When I emailed you I had not seen this post... I KNEW it!!! You can do anything Ilona... I am always impressed by your artistic talent.
She is lovely... full of character!smiles
